Vol.2012 No.4
Conceptual design of a solar powered high altitude long endurance(HALE) UAV has been performed based on technological progresses of solar cells and secondary batteries expected in the time frame of five years. Compared to the equivalent design with current technologies, increase in solar cell efficiency and the energy density of secondary battery contribute to the improvement of the UAV, reducing glide flights during night and increasing average operation altitude. Performance prediction discovers the possibility of constant altitude operation for more than 1 month during summer time over Korea.
Vol.2015 No.4
A unique multi-copter UAV design, featuring a central ducted fan and 4 surrounding rotors, is proposed to investigate the possibility for extended flight endurance and payload capability. A well designed ducted fan generates thrust on fan and duct efficiently than unshrouded rotors. The thrust and power characteristics of the electric propulsion system is analyzed based on the momentum theory, while the fans and rotors are modeled as actuator disks. The influence of the fan and rotor sizing, along with their thrust shares has been studied in an effort to optimize the performance of the overall UAV design. Currently, experimental works are being performed on scaled ducted fan models, which is expected to validate the novel UAV design concepts and improve the quality of electric propulsion design.
