This study evaluates the wearing performance of a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) belt for firefighters in Korea. A SCBA belt design was suggested based on the wearing evaluation of a SCBA belt; subsequently, prototypes I and II were created. A wearing evaluation of prototypes with improved design and design preference was performed. Six designs elements of the SCBA belt for firefighters were suggested based on the survey results of wearing the SCBA belt and for the SCBA belt design preference for use by firefighters. First, belt material should be made of black high-strength aramid textiles. In addition, Velcro should be used to attach and detach retroreflective and fluorescent materials along with various colors for visibility. Second, the chest belt should be made of the same material used for other parts; in addition, the chest belt should be moved to the center for center of gravity and a cobra buckle should be applied. Third, an O-ring should be applied to the back and the belt connected to the O-ring should distribute the weight in six axes. Fourth, a detachable air respirator should be able to separate by using upper and lower cobra buc-kles. Fifth, a separable leg belt and a detachable pocket are also suggested. Sixth, a ring for walkie-talkies, alarms and equipment as a fabric ring are also suggested. Prototype III with an improved design was created based on the results of the design suggestion.

Linen fabric is one of the most traditional fabrics for summer clothing because of its high permeability and cool feeling. However, it has some demerits such as low dyeability, poor dimensional stability, and high cost, which has encouraged the development of linen-like finishing based on cellulose materials. In this research, we evaluated the linen-like effects of cotton fabric on the objective hand value and heat transport properties with various concentrations of NMMO aqueous solution. Solvent bonding of cotton fabric through the treatment with NMMO aqueous solution was observed above 30% concentration. Primary hand values were calculated by KN-101-SUMMER equation for translating fabric mechanical parameters into hand values for summer suit fabrics. Stiffness(KOSHI) and anti-drape stiffness (HARI) remarkably increased with the concentrations of NMMO aqueous solution. It will provide a merit for summer clothing, which does not clinging to the skin during sweating.

In this study, research was conducted on $Vectran^{(R)}$ fibers (highly heat resistant, high strength, lightweight industrial fibers) to determine their suitability for use in the development of hybrid wires and cables. Vectran fibers were heat-treated to various temperatures and treated with HCl and NaOH solutions under various conditions. The effects of heat, HCl, and NaOH treatment on the creep behaviors, mechanical properties, and surface properties of Vectran fibers were examined. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was used to investigate crystallinity changes; while Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to analyze chemical structure changes resulting from degradation. Analysis showed that the mechanical properties and crystallinity of Vectran fibers changed significantly by treatment at temperatures greater than $250^{\circ}C$. Although HCl treatments did not cause significant changes, NaOH treatments resulted in considerable changes in the surface and mechanical properties and crystallinity. FT-IR and XPS analyses indicated that the degradation resulted from the hydrolysis of ester bonds in the fibers.

This study shows the thermal and moisture transfer properties of fabrics used in protective clothing for welders. The purpose of this study is to compare the performance of several fabrics used in protective clothing for welders by transfer test. The moisture transfer was affected by density and thickness of the materials. To improve emissions of water vapor, materials of lower density are suited for protective clothing. The air permeability was affected by coating agents. Silica coating has no effect on permeability of sample. On the other hand, aluminum coating has a bad influence on permeability. To improve air permeability, aluminum coated materials are not suited for protective clothing. Thermal characteristics of the materials were affected by density of the materials. Coated samples have high values of $Q_{max}$. $Q_{max}$ is warmth and coolness at instantaneous contact sense. If $Q_{max}$ shows high values, people feel cool skin sensation. The space of water and air makes the sample to have low values of heat transfer. To improve the effect of insulation, felt materials are suited for protective clothing. Felt materials are good heat blocker due to their high air contents.

The purpose of this study is to improve the interfacial adhesion strength of bamboo/PBS composites by adding HDI (hexamethylene diisocyanate) as a coupling agent. Bamboo/PBS composites with HDI were fabricated by an internal mixer and a hot press machine. In addition, the effects of HDI as a coupling agent and various HDI contents on the mechanical properties of bamboo/PBS composites were investigated. Furthermore, the tensile properties, flexural properties, and Rockwell hardness of bamboo/PBS composites with HDI were evaluated. The obtained results showed that the mechanical properties of bamboo/PBS composites were improved with the addition of HDI. The morphology of fractured surfaces of bamboo/PBS composites was observed with SEM (scanning electron microscope), and the obtained SEM images showed evidence of improved interfacial adhesion between the bamboo fiber and PBS matrix. To analyze the composition change of bamboo/PBS composites, FT-IR (Fourier transform-infra red) spectroscopy was used. The FT-IR spectra of bamboo/PBS composites also showed positive effects of using HDI as a coupling agent. Finally, a comparison of various HDI contents, when all obtained results were combined, showed that bamboo/PBS composites with a HDI content of 1.5% had the most improved mechanical properties.

The purpose of this study is to improve interfacial adhesion strength of carbon fiber reinforced hybrid composites by physical and chemical treatment. Ultrasonic irradiation was used as physical and chemical treatment relatively. The morphologies of fracture-section and surface of carbon fiber fabric/CNT reinforced hybrid composites were observed by SEM. The morphologies of specimens treated with ultrasonic showed rougher and more compact surfaces than those of untreated specimens. The specimens treated with ultrasonic showed higher impact strength compared with untreated specimens. This result showed ultrasonic irradiation is one of the effective method to improve interfacial adhesion strength between carbon fiber and matrix.

This study examined the abrasion and mechanical properties of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) flameretardant fabrics used for window coverings. The tensile linearity, tensile resilience, bending rigidity, bending hysteresis, shearing stiffness, shearing hysteresis, compression energy, and surface roughness all increased with increasing fabric density and cover factor ratio. Five samples were subjected to more than 16,000 cycles for the abrasion resistance test and to grade 4 for the snagging test. The drape test showed that the flexibility of the samples was affected by fabric density and cover factor ratio.
