An Analysis of Assessment Tasks Used in the Primary School English Textbooks and Teachers' Guides

        심규남(Kyu Nam Shim) 한국초등영어교육학회 2014 초등영어교육 Vol.20 No.4

This study aims to analyze 5th and 6th grade English textbooks and teachers' guides which are now in use in South Korean primary schools. This study also sets out to gain the teachers' perceptions on the testing materials presented in the textbooks and the teachers' guides. In order to conduct the study, through the literature review, analysis criteria of test items were constructed with two angles: test item types and thinking process types. To investigate teachers' perceptions, a questionnaire consisting of a number of open-ended questions and some close-ended ones was administered to over 84 teachers from different cities. The results of the study are as follows: First, almost all the textbooks consist of two parts of testing materials; formative test papers are usually provided in the last part of each unit and summative tests are presented in the annexed papers. Second, from the angle of test item types, multiple-choice questions, true-false questions, matching items, and sequencing items are generally used in order to assess the comprehension skills of English language. Performance oriented test items usually integrated more than two skills of English. Third, from the viewpoint of the thinking process used by learners when they address the test items, the test items usually lead the learners to recall items of language from short term memory, and to check simple facts and comprehension. Fourth, the test items asking the learners to choose the correct answer among the given options are more frequently used in the teachers' guides. Fifth, the participating teachers are generally satisfied with the test items presented in the textbooks and the teachers' guides, but they also put forward a number of opinions relevant to the issue of improving current test items.

Bacillus sp. KN-517에 의한 keratinase의 생산 최적 조건과 모발분해에 적용

        김혜숙(Kim Hye Sook),심규남(Kyu Nam Shim),강상모(Sang-Mo Kang) 한국생물공학회 2010 KSBB Journal Vol.25 No.3

A microbial strain having high keratinase activity was isolated from the soil of poultry factories of Gyeonggi or Chungcheong-do. The isolated strain was identified as Bacillus sp. based on its morphological and biochemical characteristics. In this study, the optimal conditions for the production of keratinase by this strain were investigated. The optimal medium composition for the keratinase production was determined to be 3.5% chicken feather as carbon source, 1.0% tryptone as organic nitrogen source, 1.0% KNO₃ as inorganic nitrogen source and 0.05% KCl, 0.05% KH₂PO₄, 0.03% K2HPO4 as mineral source and 0.01% yeast extract as growth factor. The optimal temperature and pH was 40℃ and 8.5 with shaking culture (200 rpm), respectively. The maximum keratinase production reached to 123 units/ml after 42 hr of cultivation under the optimal condition. When the hair was used as the sole carbon source, the maximum enzyme activity was 88 units/ml after 120 hr and in this case, the hair added in the medium was not degraded completely but got thinner than the control by 20%.

Vol.13 No.2

This study aims at setting up productive capacity which can he usefully utilized for work management of apparel manufacturers. So as to achieve this goal, an apparel manufacturing company which has been operated by mini-line system in Seoul was selected. Standard time and man-hour were calculated to create the accurate productive capacity by observing and measuring a work flow included cutting, sewing and finishing processes. And the result is as following. The standard time for each process was presented as cutting process 47004.5s, sewing process 671050.5s and finishing process 22426.3s. And 15284.4ms was computed as total procession man-hour per day of the manufacturer which is organized of 16 people. Also, the procession man-hour for each process was revealed as cutting process 396.7ms(2.6%), sewing process 14509.3ms(94.9%) and finishing process 378.5ms(2.5%). +Surplus was found in the productivity for each process included the cutting process(outshell, lining and seam process), the sewing process(preparation and arrangement process) and the finishing process. But, additional man-hour 52436.15ms was required because the productive capacity was calculated as -surplus(-13.9%) in the sewing process(part and assembly process). Therefore, a work schedule was planned based on the previous result. However, loading can be ideal when a capacity and a load become ``0``. The object company should find the way to reduce allowance(26.25%) of the sewing process through reconstruction of consciousness and improvement in functions with analyzing works of operators. Also, they need to consider an additional supplement of the personnel.

Interactional Approach to English Language Learning

        민덕기(Min Deok Gi),이승민(Lee Seung min),심규남(Shim Kyu nam) 한국초등영어교육학회 2014 초등영어교육 Vol.20 No.3

Interaction can facilitate a variety of interactional aspects as a necessary condition to learn a second or foreign language. From this perspective, many studies were performed in order to examine the effect of interaction on English learning. This research analyzed interaction-based studies and uncovered essential interactional aspects for English learning. Some factors may have the effect of enhancing or deteriorating interaction, so they were also examined. In terms of interactional aspects for English learning, four constructs were identified: comprehensible input, comprehensible output, interactional feedback, and modified output. Comprehensible input facilitates learning to take place beyond the current level. Comprehensible output enhances automatization of structured knowledge and restructuring. Interactional feedback pushes comprehensible output and provides modified input. Modified output contributes to restructuring comprehensible output and toward automatization. In terms of interaction-related factors, four constructs are believed to influence interaction: language factors, activity factors, learner factors, and socio-cultural factors. Language factors include language knowledge and skills. With reference to activity factors, activity types and procedures affect the interactional aspects. A number of learner factors affect the interactional aspects: age, cognitive and affective characteristics, and English proficiency level. Aspects of interaction are affected by socio-cultural factors such as learning environment, culture, and the relationship between the interlocutors.
