대중문화의 불온성 논쟁: 재니스 래드웨이의 문화연구적 고찰

The aim of the article is a modest one: a critical introduction of Janice Radway`s ethnographic approach to the nature of the mass and the ideological function of the romance genre and the middlebrow literature. Though I call it modest, it is not so easy a job as an introductory article usually demands, due to the peculiar place that she occupies in the Cultural Studies history. Despite her definite contributions to the theories on the mass literature, she is still not much referred to, let alone appreciated. In this article, I pursue to summarize Radway`s real merits in her active recognition of creative and even subversive qualities in the reading process of the romance-reading women readers, and also to flesh out answers as to why her good intension to find out the source of change in the mass literature fails to go long miles. The main object of attention is her two books: Reading the Romance: Women, Patriarchy, and Popular Literature and A Feeling for Books: The Book-of-the-Month-Club, Literary Taste, and Middle-Class Desire.

The tire manufacturing process demands classification of tire types when the tires are transferred between the inner processess. Though most processes are being well automated, the classifcation relies greatly upon the visual inspection of humen. This has been an obstacle to the factory automation of tire manufacturing companies. This paper proposes an effective vision system which can be usefully applied to the tire classification process in real time. The system adopts a parallel architecture using multiple transputers and contains the algorithms of preprocessing for character recognition. The system can be easily expandable to manipulate the large data that can be processed seperately.

A vision system for multi-frame data processing is proposed. It is based on PC bus, the de facto standard in most industrial applications. The purpose of this paper is to build an effective vision system for processing multi-frame data at a time. It is often requested in real world application when the targets must be handled by several frames for the purpose of resolution enhancement and/or for the reason of largeness of the objects. The major components of the vision system, image grabber & image data processor, are mainly discussed in this paper. The image grabber converts input analog signal to digital data and transfers the data directly to the image data processor without passing via the PC bus for fast data transmission. The image data processor is in charge of image processing and actually a parallel processing unit of four processing modules which operate independently. Each module contains a 32 bit transputer and its own program & frame memory. The proposed architecture is convenient for performance expansion and has no saturation accoring to it. In addition, to show the usefulness of the proposed vision system, the experimental result are also described.
