A study on the characteristics of N species in coal tar at the molecular level

The manufacturing and production of premium cokes have been issued to remove nitrogen species for upgrading their quality. APPI FT-ICR MS was applied to elucidate a detail knowledge for nitrogen formula at the molecular level. The big data with 15,000 chemical formula were classified with single(C<sub>c</sub>H<sub>h</sub>-N<sub>n</sub>), binary(C<sub>c</sub>H<sub>h</sub>-N<sub>n</sub>O<sub>o</sub>, -N<sub>n</sub>S<sub>s</sub>), and ternary (C<sub>c</sub>H<sub>h</sub>-N<sub>n</sub>O<sub>o</sub>S<sub>s</sub>) hetero nitrogen to study the characteristics of N-species, according to the as received coal tar samples. In addition, a relative abundance of DBE versus carbon and m/z as well as the DBE distribution were studied in each N-classes. These results will be further beneficial to investigate over the behaviors of N removal process(hydro-denitrogenation, oxidative denitrogenation, and thermal-denitrogenation) at the molecular level.

Deer velvet (DV) is an oriental traditional medicine used to treat various diseases. The present study examined the effect of flavourzyme-derived DV extract (YC-1101) on macrophages and an immunosuppressed mouse model. YC-1101 induced activation of macrophages as measured by nitric oxide production, cell proliferation, and cytokine release via concentration-dependent phosphorylation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase, extracellular signal-regulated kinase, and AKT, and nuclear translocation of p65 in macrophages. In addition, oral YC-1101 administration significantly increased splenocyte proliferation and natural killer cell activity in the immunosuppressed mouse model. Moreover, the levels of immune-related cytokines such as tumor necrotic factor-α, interferon-γ, and interleukin-2 were significantly increased by YC-1101 treatment comparable to the control group. Thus, these results suggest that YC-1101 is an efficient natural ingredient that has an immune-enhancing effect, and it might be a potential functional food for improving immunity.

The detailed investigation of heavy oil upgrading catalysis is important because heteroatom-containing compounds are detrimental to refining processes and the environment. ARs with different compositions were hydrotreated in two plug-flow reactors in series to study the catalytic behavior at molecular level. In order to elucidate the catalytic behavior, a 15-T FT-ICR MS equipped with APPI was applied to determine the molecular composition without chemical derivatization. We compared the bulk and molecular behavior of AR hydrotreating catalysts. The catalytic activity at molecular level was determined with respect to the relative abundance of DBE distribution dependent on carbon number for each class. We concluded that HDS is dominant for single-sulfur heteroatom systems (S1, S2, and S3), whereas binary and ternary nitrogen heteroatom systems (N<sub>n</sub>O<sub>o</sub>, N<sub>n</sub>S<sub>s</sub>, N<sub>n</sub>O<sub>o</sub>S<sub>s</sub>) were effectively hydrodenitrogenated.
The characterrization of V and Ni comlexes in Kuwait AR using GPC compled with ICP-MS

The aim of this study is to characterize the vanadium and nickel species in saturate, aromatic, resin and asphaltene fractions from typical Kuwait atmospheric residues, using GPC coupled with an ICP-MS and HT GC-AED. It was found that most of vanadium and nickel complexes were in both resin and asphaltene fractions, while there was very small amount of non-porphyrinic metal species in the aromatic fractions. The nickel complexes show higher molecular weight than that of the vanadium complexes. The porphyrin units existing in the asphaltenes linked to the larger aggregates, while in the resins associated with less aggregates.
