The aim of this thesis is to elucidate the modern trend of thε Kanghwa Hagok’s school, that aims at the realization of identity and social development. According to Hagok Jung Jε-doo( 1649 ~ 1736), human mind is the master and criterion of myriad things. This means human mind is the spring of all principles of things, and the agency realizing individual principles. For Hagok the mind of sincerity or the illustrious virtue is the root of effective govemment. It is the innate knowledge of goodness that extends and illustrate thε illustrious virtue. It makes world-peace, keeps order and brings up all things that preserves and realizes the practical mind of benevolence and wisdom. Therefore his sociopolitical reforms follow the realization of identity. Kanghwa Hagok’s school tried to recover original human identity or true humanity from the hypocritical and selfish ego. They wholly ref1ected on themselves and endeavored to have practical mind, to know real principles, and to practice the truth faithfulIy. Futhermore their leaming and living aimed to recover a decline in the national power and inspire the loss of national spirit. They intented to realize the Korean national identity by the research of Korean studies, the educational enlightenment, and the independence movement. They devoted thεmselves to thε realization of identity and different talents for the advancement of the people’s living and the development of national wealth and power. Because they thought there were not the practical development of individual or public affairs without the realization of identity.
