The duration of the winter hydrographic conditions is from December through April in the following year. when the Tsushima Current appears throughout the Cheju-Strait and expands to its extent in April. The hydrographic conditions are well mixed and are vertically homogeneous between the surface and the bottom making an even state. The coastal waters of the South Sea of Korea cooled by convection cooling in the winter season flow into the Cheju Strait in February and March. and expand their extent to the restricted area between Bogil Island and Chuja Island. They are then mixed with the Tsushima Current forming a severe difference of water temperatures and salinities in the straight between Chuja Island and Chungsan Island. Waters in the southern coastal area with a high salinity of over 34.00% in the winter and spring seasons suggests that the area is affected by the Tsushima Current from the Cheju Strait rather than the cold water from the Yellow Sea.

We studied the characteristics of bottom topography and oceanographic conditions around Marado and Jeju Island. The obtained results are summarized as follow ; 1. A bottom topography around Marado is shows irregular radiation shape with abyssal zone depth from 100m to 150m, in spite that the depth below 100m is shown in the north and the depth below 100∼120m is shown widely and flatly in south. In addition to the fronts of temperature and salinity formed between inshore water and oceanic water, small-size eddies and actively horizontal and vertical mixings are formed by strong tide and geographical features including irregular topography and an isolated island. 2. Adjacent seas of the Marade are greatly influenced by the Tsushima current. The Tsushima water branches in two directions of northeast and northwest in the sourth sea of Jeju Island. The northwest current shows high temperature and salinity than the northeast, so such inflowing plays a role inducing high temperature and salinity water.

The paper describes the oceanographic condition characteristic of the coastal are a around Seongsan harbour and the Udo strait from June 1980 to June 1981. The region influenced by fresh water was limited within Seongsan harbour, indicating the tendancy of the effect by off shore water mass in the Udo strait. In spring and autumn salinity was much more than 34‰ and in sunmer lower than any other season. During the time of observation in Udo strait, water temperature ranged from 13℃ to 24.5℃, and salinity from 32.00‰. to 34.50‰. Maximun and minimum water temperature appears in August and April respectively. Salinity was, however, the opposite of the water temperature. The region from the central part so southern tip of the Udo strait was much influenced by off shore water. Surface and bottom waters were mixed well in this strait with each other. Results of surface water temperature during ten years (1970-1979) and in July 1981 indicated the appearance of cold water mass around Seongsan in summer.
