This study investigates the different combustion and flow characteristics between two 500㎿e opposed-fired coal boilers by numerical simulation. To accurately address the operating conditions of the two boilers, the simulations were carried out in three consecutive stages of windboxes, swirl burners and the furnaces. The settings for control dampers inside windboxes and guidevane angles of swirl burners gave significantly influenced the flow rate distribution and swirl strength of combustion air. The results successfully identified the different behavior of gas temperatures observed during actual operations of the two boilers. Details of internal circulation zones of flames, particle to wall impingement and wall heat flux were acquired, which can be used to adjust the operational parameters.
