N/A Partial squeeze die casting is a special die casting process which combines squeeze technique to conventional die casting. The influence of squeeze pressure (1500-3000㎏/㎠) and time-lags(0.5-2.0sec) on defect control, density and microstructure of ADC12 alloy die casts has been studied by appling partial squeeze die casting to air compressure front housing production. Defect free, maximum density of 2.736㎏/㎤ with sound microstructure of ADC12 alloy die cast has been obtained by partial squeeze die casting technique at the pressure of 2000-2500㎏/㎠ and time-lags of 1.0-2.0sec.

N/A Front housings(a part for automobile) were die cast using ADC12 alloy by various die casting techniques such as ordinary die casting(OD), squeeze casting(SQ) and partial squeeze-pore free die casting(POD). Casting defects of those front housings and their mechanical properties were examined and compared. Casting defects such as blowholes and pinholes normally formed in OD method were eliminated by applying SQ or POD techniques. Tensile strength and elongation of die casting produced by SQ or POD techniques were 1.4 and 2.6 times higher than that of ordinary die castings. Tensile strength and elongation of ADC12 alloy front housings produced by SQ or POD techniques were increased by T6 treatment up to 38㎏/㎟ and 2.7 % respectively.

Physical properties of waterborne soft feel coatings for instrument panel were investigated. Soft feel coatings give warm and velvet touch for cold and hard plastic materials. Waterborne soft feel coating is composed with two parts. Part A contains polyester polyurethane dispersion (PE-PUD), OH-functional water dispersible polyurethane resin (PC-PUD) and OH-functional water dispersible alkyd resin (OH-PA). Part B contains hydrophilic hexamethylene diisocyanate trimer (HHDI). Soft feeling of coated panel was related with the amounts of PC-PUD and OH-PA. The physical properties of coated panel could be controlled by the NCO/OH ratio from Part A and Part B. Soft feeling was enhanced with relevant to PE-PUD content but the content of PE-PUD was limited because of weakening of coated film strength. For excellent touch and good property, the optimum composition of soft feel coat was PC-PUD(30%) and PE-PUD(20%). The results from all reliability tests satisfied soft feeling, scratch, chemical resistance and fogging.

Physical properties of sprayed polyurethane skin fur instrument panel were investigated. Optimized sprayed PU (poly urethane) composition for instrument panel was determined by reaction speed measurement, which were polyol of 6000 molecular weight and modified MDI (NCO=25%). For making sprayed PU skin, raw material was sprayed from 15cm of distance, at 15 g/min of spraying rate, on 70℃ of mold, with 75℃ of raw material. Sprayed PU skin had lower density· than PVC skin when investigating cross sections of skins using scanning electron microscope (SEM). But the reliability test results satisfied all the specification requirements like scratch, chemical resistance, contamination resistance and fogging. Tensile strength, hardness and elongation of sprayed PU skin were slightly changed during heat aging, but the changing rate was much smaller than those of PVC skin.

Since the environmental problems and new stricter regulations are forcing the industries to introduce more ecological materials for their products, biodegradable materials have attracted increasing attention. Among these materials, Polylactic acid(PLA) is remarkable for its modulus, strength, chemical resistance. However, PLA could not be used for automobile industries for its low heat resistance and impact strength. Therefore, in this study natural fibers were (jute fiber was) introduced as reinforcements in order to improve the properties of PLA. And for various experiments, Polypropylene(PP) was used as matrix resin instead of PLA. Especially for improving the properties of PLA composites, surface treatments, annealing, and adding rubber elements were performed. With surface treatments, we found that the mechanical properties of composite was improved. And with annealing treatment, we found the remarkable increase of heat resistance of PLA composite. For impact property we added reactive acrylic rubber, and we increased the impact strength by a large margin. In making test of automotive real product, we tried 3 times and acquired the well molded product as acceptable level. But in the reliability test of the product we found that PLA composite has some weak points. In the future, we will develop the long-term reliability of PLA composites and apply to the mass production of automotive interior parts.

Physical and chemical properties of primerless waterborne paint for composite polypropylene instrument panel were investigated. Primerless waterborne paint with 30% of polyolefin modified acryl emulsion, 15% of alkyl methacrylate emulsion, 3% of crosslinked polymethacrylate bead, 2% of amide modified polyethylene wax had good adhesion properties onto PP substrate without adhesion promoter and showed better properties on long tenn reliability test. In production line test, IR curing condition was insufficient for waterborne paint due to high latent heat of evaporation and complicated feature of instrument panel. Waterborne primerless paint was sensitive to painting environment compared with solventborne paint.
Physical Properties of In-Mold Coating for Powder Slush Molded Skin

Physical properties of in-mold coating (IMC) for powder slush molded (PSM) instrument panel skin were investigated. To get excellent appearance of skin, optimized IMC and release agent spray conditions were determined, which were 15 ㎝ of distance, at 30 sec of flash off time, and 15-20 microns of IMC thickness. For effective melting of powder, powder slush molding conditions were determined as 240℃ of mold temperature, 4 times of rotation time for slush molding, and 50℃ of initial mold temperature. The reliability test result of IMC satisfied all specification requirements.

Physical & chemical properties of waterborne paint for automotive instrument panel were investigated. Two different types of 2K waterborne painting were compared. One is pretreated with flame plasma, the other is blended with chlorinated polypropylene emulsion without any pretreatment. In order for food adhesion of waterborne paint on composite polypropylene (PP) substrate, at least 45mN/m of surface energy was required. Not only flame plasma pretreatment but blending with chlorinated polypropylene emulsion also gave good adhesion properties to composite PP substrate. In all reliability tests, two different waterborne painting satisfied the specification requirement like chemical resistance, weathering, scratch, and heat aging. In odor test of waterborne paint, odor grade was less than that of solventborne paint and degree of odor increased as the contents of volatile organic compounds increased.
