In common, oxidizing hairdye is used for gray hair dyeing because of excellent effect, but variety serious side effects are reported. So that, the stainability, fastness and hair protection effect of 3 different natural hennas (Lawsonia inermis) were compared with oxidizing hairdye. As the result, oxidizing hairdye treated gray hair showed reddish brown or greenish brown, and natural henna, acetic acid or NaOH mixed natural henna treated gray hairs revealed light brown and brown color. After 30 times of shampooing, 3 natural henna treated gray hairs showed lower ΔL* value than oxidizing hairdye. Especially, natural henna mixed NaOH treated gray hair showed lower ΔL* value that means good fastness than oxidizing hairdye. And the former showed that hair diameter and tensile strength were thicker and stronger than the latter. In addition, 3 different natural henna treated hair shafts revealed less damage of cuticles than oxidizing hairdye by observation of morphological change. Natural henna mixed NaOH treated gray hair shafts showed the least damage cuticles. In conclusion, the treatment henna with NaOH doesn`t not only complemented the weak point but also improves dying effect, fastness, hair coating and protection on gray hair. And it is a good and safe natural hairdye for young people who want to gray hair coloring.
