Currently, apartment plans tend to be departed from the standard pattern by householders' request and beam-column structures are getting popular instead of typical structure system, wall structure. Futhermore, traditional concepts regarding effective land use as well as importance of landscape would lead to build high rising apartments which heights are more than 100 m. According to KBC-2009, earthquake resistance designs for those apartments are getting more attentions, especially, decisions for exact period are very important for equivalent static analysis. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the safety factors for natural period of high rising apartments by comparing natural periods getting from ambient vibration method with those from period formula suggested by KBC-2009. (1) Sample structures followed by plan type, building's height, and structural system were selected and natural periods for reinforced concrete structure apartment were measured using ambient vibration method. It has been reported that results from ambient vibration method were approximately 30% lower than those from real earthquake and this study also showed similar results. It was regarded that our results might be affected nonstructural members and high rigidity from concrete structure's health evaluations. (2) Natural periods for shear wall structures measured by ambient vibration method showed considerably high error rate compared to analysis results from structural design since nonstructural members were not considered while analysis process and the structure was not damaged. Therefore, current period formula should be modified and researches for this modification should be followed.
