The purpose of this study was to analyze the writing activities of high school English textbooks in terms of connectivity through the grade levels and to compare with the NEAT(National English Ability Test) writing tests in order to examine whether the textbooks are appropriately designed to prepare the NEAT writing tests. Six high school textbooks were selected and analyzed by the number and frequency of writing activities of the English textbooks from controlled to free writing. The findings were as follows: first, the numbers of writing activities presented in the writing parts of the textbook A and B were 51 and 72. The controlled to free writing types were presented in both textbooks but were not balanced through the grade levels. Second, the connectivity between the NEAT and the types of writing in the textbooks showed that the textbooks should be designed to help students to develop their writing skills by practicing the types of writings throughout the grade levels and to provide students similar writing activities to prepare for the NEAT by studying their textbooks.
