Nasal airway resistance was measured rhinomanometrically during nasal challenge test with Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus(D. p ) in skin test positive or negative perennial rhinitis patients to quantify the nasal patency and determine if it has significant correlation with other nasal symptoms, 10(67%) of 15 skin test positive perennial allergic rhinitis patients showed positive response to nasal challenge who developed more of nasal symptoms. None of 10 skin test nagative perennial rhinitis patients show- ed positive nasal provocation test. By anterior rhino manometry, the mean nasal airway resistance of 10 skin test negative patier ts were 1.36+0.6cmH,O/ L / sec with saline and 1.37+0.52cm.H,O/ L /sec with 1:5 dilution of 1.2% housedust mite(D. p) allergen. In 10 positive response patients the nasal airway resistance was 1.61 +0.71cm HyO/L/sec with saline and 22.50+26.98an H,O/L/sec with D. p.. There was no statistically significant difference in nasal airway resistance between saline and D. p. challenge in skin test nagative patients(p>0.05). There was no difference in nasal airway resistance by control saline challenge between skin test nagative and positive patients(p>0,05), but there was sgnificant increase in nasal airway resistance by D. p. challenge in skin test positive patients comparing to skin test nagative patients(p<0.05). There was no significant correlation between nasal airway resistance and skin test reactivity(rs=0.15:p>0. 05), between nasal airway resistance and the number of sneezing(rs=0.01;p>005), between nasal airway resistance and the number of blowing(rs=0.19:p>0.05). We cocluded that nasal provocation should preferebly be done, if possible, for allergen specific diagnosis of allergic rhinitis because relatively low correlation presents between skin test and nasal provocation test results. Sneezing or blowing is not necessarily severe even in the presence of severe nasal obstruction.
