This paper covers the first international missions (to Shandong Province in China) undertaken by the Presbyterian Church in Korea, specifically focusing on the life and work of one of those early missionaries, Lee Daeyoung (1887- 1968). From very early on, the Presbyterian Church in Korea actively participated in missions, as evinced by the dispatch of missionaries to Jeju Island coinciding with the founding of the Doknohoe (Presbytery of all Korea) in 1907 and by the resolution to send missionaries to Shandong, agreed upon at the establishment of the General Assembly in 1912. In this way, the church in Korea, which had until then only received missionaries from abroad, was able to send its own international missionaries in 1913, just one year after the resolution was made. The church sent three missionaries to Shandong at that time, and later on added six more. Lee Daeyoung was one of these, becoming in 1922 the fourth missionary sent to China. He would go on to serve 33 years there. This paper examines five characteristics of the Korean missionaries’ activities in Shandong, including Lee Daeyoung’s ministry there, as well as looks into his activities back in Korea after his retirement. Compared to the importance of his ministry and his many accomplishments, Lee Daeyoung is a relatively unknown figure. Especially in comparison with the almost emblematic status that Bang Hyowon and Bang Jiil enjoy as father-and-son missionaries to Shandong, references to Lee Daeyoung are surprisingly few. More research is certainly needed on the contributions of Lee Daeyoung. 이 논문은 한국 장로교회가 1912년 총회를 창립하면서 처음 시작한 해외선교(중국 산동선교)의 특징과 이 때 중국에 파송된 선교사 가운데 하나인 이대영선교사(1887-1968)에 관한 논문이다. 한국 장로교회는 1907년에 처음으로 노회(독노회 혹은 조선노회)를 창설하였고, 1912년에는 대한예수교장로회 총회를창립하였다. 한국 장로교회는 노회 창립과 더불어 제주도에 선교사를 파송하였고, 총회창립 시에는 해외선교(중국 산동선교)를 결의하였다. 이렇게 한국 장로교회는 시작부터 선교에 매우 적극적이었다. 외국으로부터 선교를 받은 한국 교회가 처음으로 해외에 선교사를 파송한 것은 결의 1년 후인 1913년이다. 이 때 3 명의 선교사가 중국 산동성에 파송되었고 이후 6명의 선교사가 더 파송되었다. 이 가운데 이대영 선교사는 1922년 4번째로 산동에 파송되어 이후 33년 동안 중국선교에 임했다. 이 논문에서는 이대영을 비롯한 한국인 선교사들의 중국 산동선교사역의 특징을 다섯 가지로 정리하였고, 이대영 선교사의 선교사역과 선교사 퇴임 이후 한국에서의 활동을 정리하였다. 이대영 선교사는 그가 활동했던 사역의 중요성이나 업적, 성취에 비해 일반에 거의 알려지지 않은 선교사이다. 특히산동선교의 상징이 된 방효원, 방지일 부자에 비하면 그에 대한 언급이나 기록 , 소개는 미미할 따름이어서 더 많은 연구가 필요해 보인다.

Korean Church has over 120 year-old history. During that time, Korean Church has accomplished unprecedented growth that draws the world churches’ attention. Behind such a great development, however, Korean Church loses several of the characteristics that have helped it grow amazingly. Some of the losses are the strong government of the church over its members and the procedure of obtaining church’s membership. In the early Korean church, its sovereignty and membership procedure including dogma study and baptism are given a great significance. Difficult procedure of obtaining church membership shows a clue of the early Christian life in Korea! The purpose of this article is to elucidate the early Korean church’s sovereignty over its members as an important phenomenon, analysing laws and regulations of the church and the procedure of membership and membership transfer, basing on Kimpo—ôp Church’s minutes book that started in 1913. This case study illustrates not only individual church’s strong influence on its members but also sophisticated and various regulations. Therefore, we can understand how important and strong individual church’s government was. The background and reason of Korean church’s strict authority and membership tradition are summarized as follows: 1) the conservative theology of missionaries 2) the needs of effective missionary action 3)Korean circumstances 4)the effect of mission policy. With strong authority over its members, Korean church had played a strong social influence and obtained moral supremacy.
