        Effects of Modified Cervical Exercise on Respiratory Functions in Smartphone Users with Forward Head Posture

        Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of modified cervical exercise on respiratory functions in smartphone users with forward head posture. Methods: Thirty-three smartphone users with forward head posture participated in this study. Subjects were divided into three groups that performed modified cervical exercise one time a day (A group), two times a day (B group), and three times a day (C group). All subjects performed the exercise for four weeks, during which time respiratory functions were measured. Results: There were significant differences in respiratory functions such as forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume at one second, and maximal voluntary ventilation in the C group after four weeks (p<0.05). Moreover, the forced vital capacity differed among groups, and the post hoc test revealed a significant difference between A group and C group (p<0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study confirmed that modified cervical exercise improved respiratory functions in smartphone users with forward head posture. These findings indicate that smartphone users with forward head posture should perform modified cervical exercise to build correct posture and respiratory functions.

        Effect of Power Grasping on Muscle Activity of Trunk during One Leg Stance

        Purpose: This study investigated the effects of trunk muscle activity with power grasping during one leg stance. Methods: Twenty-eight subjects participated in this study. Subjects were divided into two groups, one that performed power grasping, and another that did not. An investigator measured the activities of a subject’s trunk muscle such as internal oblique (IO), external oblique (EO), erector spinae (ES), and gluteus medius (GM) while a subject was doing one leg stance. Results: An independent t-test was used to analyze trunk muscle activities with power grasping during one leg stance between the experimental group and the control group. Only the EO activity differed significantly between groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: The results indicate that one leg stance with power grasping affected trunk muscle activity. Therefore, this is a useful method for providing lumbar spine stability.

        Comparison of the Activity and Proprioception of Trunk Muscles According to Different Types of Bridge Exercises in Subjects with and without Chronic Low Back Pain

        Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to examine joint position senses and muscle activity in subjects with and without chronic low back pain and to determine the effects of different types of bridge exercises on their trunk muscle activity. Methods: Thrity -eight subjects with chronic low back pain and thrity healthy controls participated in the experiment. Joint position senses and trunk muscle activity levels were measured during the different bridge exercise methods. Results: The joint position senses of the healthy group and chronic low back pain group showed significant differences during lumbar flexion, lumbar extension, lumbar lateral flexion, and lumbar rotation. The muscle activity levels of the transversus abdominis (TrA), internal oblique (IO), and external oblique (EO) were highest in the prone bridge exercise (PBE) group, followed by the supine bridge swiss ball exercise (SBSE) group and supine bridge exercise (SBE) group in order of precedence. The muscle activity level of the erector spinae (ES) was highest in the SBSE group, followed by the SBE and PBE groups in order of precedence. Conclusion: Overall, the results suggest that chronic low back pain is associated with declines in joint position senses and that PBEs increase trunk muscle activity more than conventional bridge exercises.

        청소년기 척추 측만증과 정상학생의 균형능력 및 체간 유연성과 근력의 비교

        본 연구의 목적은 청소년기 특발성 척추측만증 환자를 대상으로 정상군과 비교하여 균형능력, 체간의 유연성, 체간 굴곡 및 신전근의 등속성 근력비교를 통하여 측만증 환자의 특성을 알아보는데 있다. 척추측만증 환자 25명과 대조군26명을 대상으로 하여 Tetrax balance system을 이용한 균형능력 평가와 함께 체간의 굴곡 및 신전 유연성, 등속성근력 장비(CON-TREX)를 이용하여 체간 굴곡, 신전의 등속성 근력평가를 실시하였다. 통계적 처리는 Mann-Whitney test를 이용하여 측 만군과 정상군간의 차이를 비교분석하였다. 척추측만증 유무에 따른 체간의 유연성 검사상 두 군간의 유의한 차이는 없었으며, 균형능력 검사의 안정도 지수 (stability index) 또한 두 군간 차이가 없었다. 그러나 체간의 근력평가에서 각속도 120 °/sec의 등속성 운동 시 측만증 군과 정상 군 간 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 있었다. 이의 결과를 근거로 청소년기 특발성 척추측 만증 환자의 특성을 알 수 있었으며, 이런 특성의 파악이 향후 척추측만증 환자의 치료에 도움이 될 것으로 사료된다. The purpose of this study was to find the characteristics and to find the difference between adolescent idiopathic spinal scoliosis patients and normal students by comparing the difference in balance (stability), flexibility of t runk and muscle power of t runk f lexion and extension. Twenty-five patients who had spinal scoliosis were selected and twenty-six with structurally normal spines were checked their flexibility of trunk, stability using Tetrax balance system, and muscle power or trunk flexor and extensor with CON-TREX biomechanical system. Mann-Whitney test was used to analyze the difference between these groups. It was shown that there was no r emark able d ifference in f lexibility of t runk and a lso in b alance ability b etween the two groups. But, we have discovered statistically remarkable difference in trunk extensor power at 120 °/sec. From this result, we have recognized the characteristics of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patients, and we believe that these findings may lead us to treat the scoliosis patients in a way we have not tried before.

        불안정한 표면 운동이 척추측만증 환자의 체간자세와 균형에 미치는 영향

        Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of lumbar stabilization exercise on an unstable surface on trunk posture and static standing balance ability in patients with scoliosis. Methods: Subjects included 18 patients who showed symptom of scoliosis. Patients were divided into two experimental groups, one using an unstable surface and one using a fixed surface, and the patients were required to perform a lumbar stabilization exercise a total of 12 times for 60 minutes per session, three times per week for a period of four weeks, with a six-months follow-up period. Results: A significant reduction was observed in the group that performed the lumbar stabilization exercise on an unstable surface (p<0.05). A significant decrease in both the condition of closed eyes or open eyes in the left and right directions was observed in the group that performed the lumbar stabilization exercise on an unstable surface (p<0.05). After six months, results of comparison of the length of both sides of the trunk showed a significantl decrease in the group performing lumbar stabilization exercises on an unstable surface. Conclusion: Lumbar stabilization exercise on an unstable surface improved the trunk posture of patients with scoliosis symmetrically, and static balance ability in a standing posture showed improvement. In the future, lumbar stabilization exercise on an unstable surface may be used as an exercise for posture correction and balance increase for patients with scoliosis.

        활성플럭스 조성에 따른 A-TIG용접 특성

        Conventional TIG(C-TIG) welding process guarantees higher quality weldment when compared with other processes. However, C-TIG with inherent low penetration shows disadvantages in productivity, especially for thick-walled structure. To overcome these handicaps, active-flux TIG(A-TIG) welding has been introduced and studied widely in a motivation to improve both quality and productivity. Present study made a focus on optimum combination of oxide components to enhance arc contraction and penetration. Results indicated that arc contraction inducing enhancement of penetration could be possible when composition of active fluxes was well matched with base metal.

        Comparative Study on Muscle Activity and Torque Value of Quadriceps of Healthy Adults

        Purpose: The current study seeks to identify the relationship between torque values of the quadriceps and muscle activity during isometric and isokinetic exercises. Methods: The subjects of the study included 29 healthy individuals 17 men and 12 women) who took part in isometric and isokinetic exercises that utilized the quadriceps. The isometric exercises were performed three times each at 4 different angles (0, 30, 60, and 90 degrees). For the isokinetic exercises, concentric contraction and eccentric contraction were undertaken three times each at two angular velocities (30 and 60 degrees). Results: The muscle activity of the quadriceps during the isometric exercises showed significant differences at the 30, 60, and 90 degree angles. During the concentric contractions and eccentric contractions, muscle activity at the peak torque of the quadriceps indicated significant differences in vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, and rectus femoris at angular velocities of 30 and 60 degrees. Conclusion: When applied clinically based on the biomechanical analysis of the current study, it is possible to anticipate and selectively strengthen muscles with isometric and isokinetic exercises for not only healthy adults and professional athletes, but also for those who experience limited knee movement for long periods following knee surgeries.
