Erosion and thermal shock resistance of several refractory materials have been investigated, which are expected to be used as nozzles in a planar flow casting equipment for amorphous alloys. The test was conducted on five materials; graphite, boron nitride, fused silica, alumina and zirconia. Test specimens were preheated and dipped into the melt of carbon steel and amorphous alloys. Some test specimens were rotated to develop high erosion and to shorten the test periods. Fused silica and boron nitride specimens showed the excellent erosion and thermal shock resistance irrespective of the kind of melt and melting atmosphere.

To add alloying elements into a pure copper melt, the wire-feeding efficiency of cored (alloy containing) wire was evaluated using a commercial, computational fluid-dynamics program. The model design was based on an industrial-scale production line. The variables calculated included wire feed rate, melt temperature, wire diameter, melt flow rate and wire temperature. Efficiency was evaluated after a series of calculations based on the penetration depth of the alloy-wire into the molten copper bath. Of the five variables investigated, the wire feed rate and wire diameter were the most influential factors affecting the feeding efficiency of the cored-wire.

The present study describes a new technique to extract the primary silicon from an Al-Si alloy melt using centrifugal force during its solidification. The primary silicon was separated from an Al-50 wt.%Si alloy by centrifugal force in the form of a foam, which facilitated subsequent acid leaching to extract the pure silicon due to its wide surface area. The foam recovery after centrifugal separation was decreased as centrifugal acceleration was increased. The final recovery after acid leaching became closer to the solid fraction of the alloy, which was calculated from the Al-Si binary phase diagram,with increasing centrifugal acceleration due to the effective removal of the attached Al on the foam. The purity of the primary silicon obtained by the centrifugal separation method was over 99.99%, with only aluminum being also present.
