While maintaining contact with China politically, diplomatically, culturally, and economically, Korea has continued her military relationship with China, for the past 2,000 years. China was, however, not the only state with which Korea had associated. However, relationships with other countries have not been long, compared to those with China. Even when they were long, they were frequently interrupted by the prevailing conditions of each age. Besides, such relationshipswere limited only to certain perids. The reason is self-evident-that is, the geographical isolation of East Asia. Prior to the overcoming of the geographical inconveniences of East Asia in modern times, East Asia was within the sphere of influence of China with its highly developed culture and power for 2,500 or 2,600 years. In short, Korea was directly or indirectly influenced to a great extent byaccepting China's political system, diplomatic method, economic activity and culture. It is often concluded hastily that the history of Chinese-Korean relations is characterized by that of master-servant. However, a close study of the relationship between the two countries shows alternating friendship and antagonism. This paper attempts to reexamine the characteristics of Chinese-Korean relations from the above point of view, and to define Korea's view toward foreign countries. The period covered in this article is up to the end of the 19th century; this is a bird's eyeview of such aspects as politics, economics, and culture.
