민영대 한국고소설학회 2000 古小說 硏究 Vol.10 No.1
Choirangjeon deals with the genuine character, Yeotaek Lee(李汝澤), who lived in the Kyungju(慶州) province during King Hyojong's(孝宗) regime in Lee Dynasty(朝鮮時代). The main motif of this work centers on the enactment of the new legal system, the main purpose of which is to locate all the hidden or run-away servants. About the authorship and the time it was written nothing is identifiable. However, considering the life span of Yeotaek Lee and the enactment of the new legal system, Choirangjeon is supposed to have been written during the late 17th century. The author is supposed to belong to the educated Yangban(兩班) class living in the southern part of Chosun. The main plot centers on the marriage between Yeotak Lee and Choirang(崔娘)and its tragic ending. The new legal system fated Choirang, whose grandmother had been the government servant, to fall under the servant status. Yeotaek Lee, after resolving her from becoming the servant by giving away of his three servants to the government, gets married with her. However, this caused him to be fired from his present job. Leaving Choirang behind, Yeoktaek goes up to Hanyang(漢陽) and finally becomes the major of Anju(安州) province. Their reunion, however, faces a tragic ending, for Choirang cannot survive the long and exhausting trip up to Hanyang. We are not certain yet how much portion of the story is real. However, considering Yeotaek's identifiable status as the major of Heunghae(興海) and Anju(安州), we can assure that the author has created some fictional elements and mixed them in the real situation. To make more intriguing plot development, whenever the crisis is uprising, the author stops his own narration and intermingle letter writing. Thus used, the letter writing functions as one of the effective narrative techniques that succeeds in revealing characters' personalities and inner realities.
