The purpose of this study is to establish some standards of meaning of national education, to describe his achievement and activity by the view of national education in the light of the state age and society, eventually to evaluate and set up his educational thought in its proper place with reference to the history of modem educational thought of Korea. The results of this study are as follows. First, Han-Seo's formative background of thought is the thought of national education and modem oriented thought for enlightenment with and advanced propensity, because he had experienced a new inclination of the western world and enlightened idea through his life. Second, Han-Seo's educational practice movement is a type of modem national education in Korea. The nationalism that is revealed in his thought of national education is modem-oriented freedom within nation because of grasping our nation as a main body of educational perception, and independence from foreign influence for the restoration of our national right. Third, Han-Seo's educational practice movement is an ideal statue of teacher in the history of modem education in Korea, as an educator, Han-Seo's practical, educational will and method, leading a tendencies of education in the transition period, are always remained a good figure of education who was an advocate for new education that changed over modem educational contents and methods.
