        Proton pump inhibitor intake negatively affects the osseointegration of dental implants: a retrospective study

        Objectives: This study sought to investigate the association between the systemic intake of proton pump inhibitors (PPI) and the early failure of dental implants. Materials and Methods: A retrospective cohort study involving 1,918 dental implants in 592 patients (69 implants in 24 PPI users and 1,849 implants in 568 nonusers, respectively) was conducted. The effect of PPI intake on the osseointegration of dental implants was evaluated using patientand implant-level models. Results: Among 24 PPI users, two patients experienced implant failure, one of whom had three and the other of whom had one failed implant, respectively. Thus, the rate of failure for this population was 8.3%. Separately, 11 nonusers each experienced one implant failure, and the failure rate for these patients was 1.9%. Fisher’s exact test revealed statistically significant differences between PPI users and nonusers at the implant level (P=0.002) but failed to show any significance at the patient level (P=0.094). The odds of implant failure were 4.60 times greater among PPI users versus nonusers. Dental implants that were placed in patients using PPIs were found to be 4.30 times more likely to fail prior to loading. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that PPI intake may be associated with an increased risk of early dental implant failure.

        Comparing the precision of panoramic radiography and cone-beam computed tomography in avoiding anatomical structures critical to dental implant surgery: A retrospective study

        Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlations between measurements made using panoramic radiography and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) based on certain anatomical landmarks of the jaws, with the goal of preventing complications due to inaccurate measurements in the pre-surgical planning phase of dental implant placement. Materials and Methods: A total of 56 individuals who underwent panoramic radiography and a CBCT evaluation before dental implant surgery were enrolled in the study. Measurements were performed to identify the shortest vertical distance between the alveolar crest and neighboring anatomical structures, including the maxillary sinus, nasal floor, mandibular canal, and foramen mentale. The differences between the measurements on panoramic radiography and CBCT images were statistically analyzed. Results: Statistically significant differences were observed between the measurements on panoramic radiography and CBCT for all anatomical structures (P<.05). The correlation coefficients (r) between the paired samples obtained from panoramic radiography and CBCT were closely correlated (P<.05), with r values varying from 0.921 and 0.979 for different anatomical regions. Conclusion: The results of this study support the idea that panoramic radiography might provide sufficient information on bone height for preoperative implant planning in routine cases or when CBCT is unavailable. However, an additional CBCT evaluation might be helpful in cases where a safety margin cannot be respected due to insufficient bone height.

        The object of the present paper is to study the almost Hermitian submersion from an almost Hermitian manifold admits a Ricci soliton. Where, we investigate any fibre of such a submersion is a Ricci soliton or Einstein. We also get necessary conditions for which the base manifold of an almost Hermitian submersion is a Ricci soliton or Einstein. Moreover, we obtain the harmonicity of an almost Hermitian submersion from a Ricci soliton to an almost Hermitian manifold.

        Risperidone Induced Pisa Syndrome in a Male Adolescent

        Pisa syndrome, a rare dystonic reaction resulting from prolonged exposure to antipsychotic medications, is characterized by persistent dystonia of trunk muscles and abnormal posture. It is called Pisa syndrome, because the abnormal posture resembles the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Different from other types of dystonic reactions, Pisa syndrome is more prevalent in females and in older patients with organic brain changes. A 15-year-old male patient with mental retardation was admitted to pediatric neurology clinic for the complaint of abnormal posturing. He had been taking only risperidone for the last four years. Over the last month, the patient gradually developed tonic flexion of trunk and head toward left and was diagnosed with Pisa syndrome. In this paper, we aimed to discuss the association between risperidone use and Pisa syndrome in light of the available literature.

        Risperidone Related Raynaud’s Phenomenon: An Adolescent Case

        Raynaud’s phenomenon is a recurrent vasospastic condition with reducing in peripheral blood flow due to cold, or emotional stress. White, blue and red discolorations occur during the attacks. Serotonin reuptake inhibitors, psychostimulants, and aripiprazole are reported to be related with Raynaud’s phenomenon. Risperidone is an atypical antipsychotic drug with dopaminergic and serotonergic effects. In children and adolescents, risperidone is used for bipolar disorder, tic disorders, conduct disorder, schizophrenia, symptoms of irritability and self-mutilation. Here we report a case of Raynaud’s phenomenon associated with risperidone in a 12-year-old boy. Raynaud’s phenomenon occurred two weeks after starting risperidone and disappeared after stopping risperidone.

        Paliperidone Palmitate-induced Urinary Incontinence: A Case Report

        Urinary incontinence, although rarely reported, is one of the most important adverse effects of antipsychotic medication. It can be an embarrassing, distressing, and potentially treatment-limiting. Several antipsychotics, including both typical and atypical varieties, are known to induce urinary incontinence. Many antipsychotic drugs target the neural pathways controlling continence by binding to receptors of some neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, acetylcholine, and adrenaline. Pharmacological management of incontinence should be considered if there is a risk of cessation of the antipsychotic therapy or any decline in patients' compliance. Amitriptyline, desmopressin, ephedrine, and anticholinergics such as oxybutynin and trihexyphenidyl are the most frequently used agents to treat incontinence. We think that the frequency of incontinence is higher than reported in the literature, and that follow-up routines should include a form of standardized screening for all possible adverse effects, including incontinence, of any given antipsychotic. In this article, we report a case of urinary incontinence as an adverse effect of paliperidone palmitate use during maintenance therapy in a patient with schizophrenia.

        Effect of simultaneous administration of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and anthrax vaccines on antibody response to FMD in sheep

        Purpose: Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and anthrax are important diseases in sheep. Vaccination is a favorable strategy against both infections. Simultaneous administration of vaccines does generally not impede the immune responses of each other, although there are some exceptions, and it may help reduce the labor and costs of vaccination as well as distress on animals. Although oil adjuvant FMD vaccine has been tried with live anthrax vaccine in cattle, there are no reports on the simultaneous use of both vaccines in sheep. Materials and Methods: In this study, FMD seronegative sheep were used to investigate the impact of the simultaneous vaccination of FMD and anthrax on FMD antibody titers of sheep. Virus neutralization test and liquid phase blocking enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were used to determine the antibody response to the FMD vaccine. Results: The results demonstrated that both vaccines can be used simultaneously without any interference with the FMD response. Moreover, the simultaneous administration with anthrax vaccine had a stimulating effect on the early (day 7 post-vaccination) virus neutralization antibody response to the FMD vaccine. Conclusion: The simultaneous use of the FMD and anthrax vaccines did not hinder the response to the FMD vaccine in sheep.

        The Effect of Gamma Radiation Sterilization on Dental Biomaterials

        Biomaterials are used in the field of bone and tissue engineering, orthopaedics and dentistry. Dental biomaterials including commercially available biodegradable materials act as physical barriers to help quicker healing while stimulating the regeneration of periodontal tissues, which is defined as Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR). Amongst natural and synthetic biomaterials, collagen and aliphatic polyesters, such as polylactic acid (PLA) and poly (lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA) are the most frequently used biomaterials for regenerative therapies due to their excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability. Due to their resorption in the body and interaction with biological systems, the GTR membranes must be sterile and pyrogen free. The sterility and apyrogenicity of the GTR membranes before human use is a regulatory requirement, however the sterilization of biomaterials is challenging due to the physicochemical changes and toxic residues with the commonly used sterilization techniques. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of gamma radiation and ethylene oxide sterilization on dental biomaterials with analytical, microbiological and histological examinations. PLGA-based GTR dental biomaterial is selected as the most gamma stable membrane according to the FTIR, DSC, TGA, and SEM results. This dental membrane was sterilized with ethylene oxide (EtO) and the effect of sterilization method on PLGA-based membrane was also investigated. Animal experiments were carried out to evaluate the regenerative properties and inflammatory responses of gamma and EtO sterilized PLGA-based GTR membrane after implantation. Histological examinations showed that resorption and bone formation of gamma sterilized PLGA-based GTR membrane was completed in 12 weeks without any inflammatory response; while only 60.095 ± 2.019% of new bone formation was observed with EtO sterilized one. Gamma sterilized PLGA membrane had significantly faster (P < 0.05) resorption and bone formation in comparison with EtO sterilization. In conclusion, the PLGA-based biomaterials could be sterilized safely and time- and cost-effectively with validated radiation doses for the tissue engineering applications.
