Vertebral fractures occur with only slight trauma in patients with diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH). However, a lumbar vertebra fracture, due to an intraoperative body position has not been previously reported. An 87-year-old woman with kyphosis sustained a left trochanteric fracture of her femur. The patient was placed in a supine position during the operation. Postoperatively, the patient experienced severe right thigh pain. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an L4 vertebral fracture. Computed tomography revealed ankylosis from the upper thoracic spine to the sacrum. While in a supine position under general anesthesia, the contact of the patient’s lower back with operating table likely created a fulcrum at her lumbosacral spine acting as a long lever arm, bearing the mass of her upper body. We performed L1–S2 posterior stabilization. DISH patients with kyphosis placed in a supine position have an increased risk for lumbar vertebral fracture.

A 2-month-old female Holstein calf and a 5-month-old female Japanese black calf presented with gingival vascular hamartoma located in the interdental space between the second and third mandibular incisors in the right and left mandibles, respectively. On radiographic or computed tomographic images, osteolytic changes appeared within the mandibular bones adjacent to the masses. The masses were removed along with affected mandibular bone by using unilateral rostral mandibulectomy. After surgery, both cases exhibited a normal appetite and grew normally, with no cosmetic changes or recurrences. Unilateral rostral mandibulectomy can be applied for invasive gingival vascular hamartomas associated with osteolytic changes.

One-carbon metabolism plays an important role in colorectal carcinogenesis. Meta-analyses have suggested protective associations of folate and vitamin $B_6$ intakes with colorectal cancer primarily based on studies in Caucasians, and genetic polymorphisms pertaining to the folate metabolism have been a matter of interest. Less investigated are the roles of methionine synthase (MTR) and thymidylate synthetase (TS) polymorphisms in colorectal carcinogenesis. In a study of 816 cases and 815 community controls in Japan, we investigated associations of dietary intakes of folate, methionine, vitamin $B_2$, vitamin $B_6$, and vitamin $B_{12}$ with colorectal cancer risk. The associations with MTR 2756A>G, MTRR 66A>G, and TSER repeat polymorphism were examined in 685 cases and 778 controls. Methionine and vitamin $B_{12}$ intakes were inversely associated with colorectal cancer risk, but the associations were totally confounded by dietary calcium and n-3 fatty acids. The other nutrients showed no association with the risk even without adjustment for calcium and n-3 fatty acids. The TSER 2R allele was dose-dependently associated with an increased risk. The MTR and MTRR polymorphisms were unrelated to colorectal cancer risk. There was no measurable gene-gene or gene-nutrient interaction, but increased risk associated with the TSER 2R allele seemed to be confined to individuals with high folate status. This study does not support protective associations for folate and vitamin $B_6$. The TSER 2R allele may confer an increased risk of colorectal cancer. The role of the TSER polymorphism in colorectal carcinogenesis may differ by ethnicity.

Gamma-motoneurons (gamma MNs) play a crucial role in regulating isometric muscle contraction. The slow jaw-closing during mastication is one of the most functional isometric contractions, which is developed by the rank-order recruitment of alpha-motoneurons (alpha MNs) in a manner that reflects the size distribution of alpha MNs. In a mouse spinal motor nucleus, there are two populations of small and large MNs; the former was identified as a population of gamma MNs based on the positive expression of the transcription factor estrogen-related receptor 3 (Err3) and negative expression of the neuronal DNA-binding protein NeuN, and the latter as that of alpha MNs based on the opposite pattern of immunoreactivity. However, the differential identification of alpha MNs and gamma MNs in the trigeminal motor nucleus (TMN) remains an assumption based on the size of cell bodies that were retrogradely stained with HRP. We here examined the size distributions of alpha MNs and gamma MNs in the dorsolateral TMN (dl-TMN) by performing immunohistochemistry using anti-Err3 and anti-NeuN antibodies. The dl-TMN was identified by immunopositivity for vesicular glutamate transporter-1. Immunostaining for choline acetyltransferase and Err3/NeuN revealed that the dl-TMN is composed of 65% alpha MNs and 35% gamma MNs. The size distribution of alpha MNs was bimodal, while that of gamma MNs was almost the same as that of the population of small alpha MNs , suggesting the presence of alpha MNs as small as gamma MNs. Consistent with the size concept of motor units, the presence of smaller jaw-closing alpha MNs was coherent with the inclusion of jaw-closing muscle fibers with smaller diameters compared to limb muscle fibers.

PLZT Light Transmittance Memory Driven with an Asymmetric Voltage Pulse
Kazuhiko Inoue,Takeshi Morita 한국물리학회 2010 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.57 No.41
PLZT is a ferroelectric electro-optic material, which has been operated with a constant voltage supply to keep a certain optical property. In this study, we propose an optical transmittance memory effect by controlling the domain conditions. The keypoint is to use an asymmetric voltage pulse. In the positive direction, a sufficiently-large voltage is applied to align the polarization directions. After this operation, a relatively small light transmittance is memorized even after removing the electric field. On the other hand, in the negative direction, the amplitude of the voltage is adjusted to the coercive electric field. In this condition, the domain structure is almost the same as the depolarization state. With this voltage supply, the maximum light transmittance can be kept after removing the electric field. Using these voltage operations, the PLZT can obtain two light transmittance states depending on the domain structure. This memory effect should be useful for innovative optical scanners or shutters in the future.
Field-induced Strain Memory with Non-180˚ Domain-reorientation Control
Yoichi Kadota,Hiroshi Hosaka,Takeshi Morita 한국물리학회 2010 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.57 No.41
Using non-180˚ domain-reorientation control, we propose the strain memory effect in ferroelectric ceramics. Electric fields with asymmetric amplitudes were applied to soft-type lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramics, and the strain hysteresis and the polarization loop were measured. The butterfly curve became asymmetric under an electric field with a particular asymmetric amplitude. The asymmetric butterfly curve had two stable strain states at zero electric field. Thus, the strain memory effect was realized as the difference between the two stable strain states. An XRD analysis was carried out to verify the contribution of the non-180˚ domain reorientation to the strain memory effect. The non-180˚ domain reorientation was determined as the intensity ratio of the (002) to the (200) peak. The strain memory determined from macroscopic strain measurements had a linear relationship to the non-180 domain volume fraction. This result indicated the origin of the strain memory to be the non-180˚ domain reorientation.
Hydrothermal (K1−xNax)NbO3 Lead-free Piezoelectric Ceramics
Takafumi Maeda,Norihito Takiguchi,Takeshi Morita,Mutsuo Ishikawa,Tobias Hemsel 한국물리학회 2010 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.57 No.41
As a lead-free piezoelectric ceramic, (K,Na)NbO3 is a promising material because of its good piezoelectric properties. In this study, (K1−xNax)NbO3 ceramics were synthesized from a mixture of KNbO3 and NaNbO3 powders prepared by using the hydrothermal reaction. The hydrothermal reaction enables the production of high quality powders for the ceramic fabrication process. To obtain (K1−xNax)NbO3 ceramics, the KNbO3 and the NaNbO3 powders were mixed and sintered together. X-Ray diffraction analysis revealed that the solid solution ceramic (K1−xNax)NbO3 was formed by the sintering process. The K/Na ratio in the (K1−xNax)NbO3 ceramic was optimized for the best piezoelectric properties. The optimized form was (K0.48Na0.52)NbO3, which showed the following piezoelectric properties: k33 = 0.56 and d33 = 114 pC/N. In addition, the ferroelectric properties Pr = 7.72 μC/cm2, Ec = 857 V/mm, and Tc = 420 ℃ were measured.
