Protective Effects of Persimmon Leaf and Fruit Extracts against Acute Ethanol-Induced Hepatotoxicity

Ma, Jie,Liu, Xiao-Yu,Noh, Kyung-Hee,Kim, Myo-Jeong,Song, Young-Sun The Korean Society of Food Science and Nutrition 2007 Preventive Nutrition and Food Science Vol.12 No.4

Persimmon is well-known as a Korean traditional medicine for alleviating coughs and enhancing blood circulation; it is also used for treatment of hypertension, cancer, diabetes and atherosclerosis. To evaluate the protective properties of persimmon leaf methanol extract (PLME) and persimmon fruit methanol extract (PFME) administration on acute ethanol-induced hepatotoxicity, C57BL/6 male mice were gavaged with or without persimmon extracts for 1 week. Hepatotoxicity was then induced by gavage of 5 g/kg BW ethanol. After 12 hr of ethanol administration, blood and liver were collected and analyzed for biochemical markers of hepatotoxicity. The results showed PLME and PFME treatments decreased the activities of serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) compared with ethanol control. Both PLME and PFME reduced serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity, but elevated alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity. Serum triglyceride (TG) and hepatic cholesterol levels were significantly decreased when treated with PLME and PFME. Liver malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were significantly decreased in PLME and PFME groups compared with ethanol control. Furthermore, the administration of PLME and PFME significantly increased the activities of catalase, glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and glutathione reductase (GSH-red). In summary, PLME and PFME appeared to prevent hepatic injury by accelerating alcohol metabolism by increasing alcohol-metabolizing enzyme activities, by activating the antioxidative enzyme system against oxidative stress, and by decreasing fat accumulation, which is evidenced by decreased hepatotoxic indices in serum.

Flow separation control of two kinds of microvortex generators for a supersonic spinning projectile

        Jie Ma,Zhen-gui Huang,Zhihua Chen,Da-wen Xue,Jun-li Han 대한기계학회 2017 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.31 No.1

Previous studies have shown that Microvortex generators (MVGs) can effectively control the flow separation of supersonic boundary layer. To improve the flight stability of a spinning projectile, two kinds of MVGs, micro ramps and vanes, are applied to control the flow separation of an original standard 155 mm projectile, respectively. Numerical simulations were performed with the use of Detached eddy simulation (DES) method, and the flow fields of the projectile with and without micro MVGs were simulated, the characteristics of the boundary layer and aerodynamic data of three cases were compared and discussed. The numerical results reveal that the effect of the MVGs control is obvious, but their mechanisms are different, and the vanes are more effective than the ramp in the boundary layer control. However, they can both improve the lift and pitching moment of the projectile, and eliminate their oscillations; as a result, its flight stability and firing dispersion can be enhanced. Our results can provide important guidance for improving the flight quality of supersonic projectiles.

Brain Metabolic Network Redistribution in Patients with White Matter Hyperintensities on MRI Analyzed with an Individualized Index Derived from 18F-FDG-PET/MRI

        Ma Jie,Hua Xu-Yun,Zheng Mou-Xiong,Wu Jia-Jia,Huo Bei-Bei,Xing Xiang-Xin,Gao Xin,Zhang Han,Xu Jian-Guang 대한영상의학회 2022 Korean Journal of Radiology Vol.23 No.10

Objective: Whether metabolic redistribution occurs in patients with white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is unknown. This study aimed 1) to propose a measure of the brain metabolic network for an individual patient and preliminarily apply it to identify impaired metabolic networks in patients with WMHs, and 2) to explore the clinical and imaging features of metabolic redistribution in patients with WMHs. Materials and Methods: This study included 50 patients with WMHs and 70 healthy controls (HCs) who underwent 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/MRI. Various global property parameters according to graph theory and an individual parameter of brain metabolic network called “individual contribution index” were obtained. Parameter values were compared between the WMH and HC groups. The performance of the parameters in discriminating between the two groups was assessed using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). The correlation between the individual contribution index and Fazekas score was assessed, and the interaction between age and individual contribution index was determined. A generalized linear model was fitted with the individual contribution index as the dependent variable and the mean standardized uptake value (SUVmean) of nodes in the whole-brain network or seven classic functional networks as independent variables to determine their association. Results: The means ± standard deviations of the individual contribution index were (0.697 ± 10.9) x 10-3 and (0.0967 ± 0.0545) x 10-3 in the WMH and HC groups, respectively (p < 0.001). The AUC of the individual contribution index was 0.864 (95% confidence interval, 0.785–0.943). A positive correlation was identified between the individual contribution index and the Fazekas scores in patients with WMHs (r = 0.57, p < 0.001). Age and individual contribution index demonstrated a significant interaction effect on the Fazekas score. A significant direct association was observed between the individual contribution index and the SUVmean of the limbic network (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The individual contribution index may demonstrate the redistribution of the brain metabolic network in patients with WMHs.

Assessment Based on the Forecast Error for the Transition Period between the Jianghuai Meiyu and North China Rainy Seasons in 2016

        Jie Ma,Zhiping Zong,Li Jianping,Ruiqing Ding 한국기상학회 2021 Asia-Pacific Journal of Atmospheric Sciences Vol.57 No.3

During the transition period between the Jianghuai Meiyu and North China rainy seasons in 2016, there was a high-impact rainstorm event, connecting these two rainy seasons. However, both the short and medium range forecasts predicted a rain band that was too far south; this error can have serious implications for flood preparedness. This study discusses the causes of the forecast error using the ECMWF deterministic and ensemble models. The results show that the prediction of a too-weak westerly trough at the 500-hPa level is the dominant factor. Specifically, a weaker predicted 500-hPa westerly trough reduces the strength of the low vortex at 850 hPa; correspondingly, the shear line to the east of the vortex and the Meiyu front are weaker and farther south, and the monsoon is also weaker, which causes the large area of humidity convergence to be shifted southward. Finally, the heavy rainfall is located farther south with weaker intensity. And vice visa, when a stronger westerly trough is predicted, the location of rain band will be northward. This conclusion may be useful for meteorological decision making in medium range and will help to improve capabilities of risk reduction.

      • Preparation of superparamagnetic ZnFe2O4 submicrospheres via a solvothermal method

        Ma, Jie,Chen, Bingjie,Chen, Bingkun,Zhang, Shuping Techno-Press 2017 Advances in nano research Vol.5 No.2

Superparamagnetic Zinc ferrite submicropheres are firstly synthesized via a one-pot solvothermal approach at $200-215^{\circ}C$ for 4-8 hours. $ZnCl_2$, $FeCl_3$ and NaAc are used as precursors with ethylene glycol solvent. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) data indicate that $ZnFe_2O_4$ nanoparticles with the grain size around $15{\pm}3nm$ can be successfully synthesized via the one-pot method. The scanning/transmission electronic microscope (SEM/TEM) images further show the samples are submicrospheres self-assembled by nanoparticles with size about 375-500 nm changed with reaction conditions. Room-temperature vibration magnetic strength measurements (VMS) demonstrates the as-obtained $ZnFe_2O_4$ submicrospheres show prefect superparamagnetism, whose coercivity force and remanence are practically nil. The reaction temperature and time influence on the crystallinity, diameter, saturated magnetic intensity and morphology of the particles.

      • Role of TGF-β1 in Human Colorectal Cancer and Effects after Cantharidinate Intervention

Ma, Jie,Gao, Hai-Mei,Hua, Xin,Lu, Ze-Yuan,Gao, Hai-Cheng Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.9

Effects of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-${\beta}$) were investigated in human colorectal cancer, and the influence of cantharidinate in inhibiting TGF-${\beta}1$ expression was explored. Relationships among TGF-${\beta}1$ and sex, age, tumor size, tumor location, tumor stage were also analyzed. H&E and immunohistochemistry staining were employed to assess colorectal cancer and TGF-${\beta}1$ expression, respectively. Then, HCT-116 CRC cells were randomly divided into four groups, controls, no serum-treated, chemotherapy and cantharidinate-treated. Immunohistochemistry and real-time PCR were employed to assess the expression of TGF-${\beta}1$ in CRC cells. Our data showed that the expression of TGF-${\beta}1$ might be associated with tumor size and tumor location (P<0.05). The expression of TGF-${\beta}1$ in CRC groups was higher than in adjacent groups (P<0.05). In addition, the expression of TGF-${\beta}1$ in cantharidinate-treated group was much lower than in CRC group (P<0.05). Taken together, these results suggest that TGF-${\beta}1$ plays an important role in CRC development. Cantharidinate might inhibit the expression of TGF-${\beta}1$ and control the development of colorectal cancer.
