Objectives : This study was conducted to investigate the association between the symptoms of boys with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and the attention-deficit hyperactivity symptoms, temperament and character patterns of their parents. Methods : Forty-five boys with ADHD and who met the DSM-IV criteria were evaluated by using the ADHD rating scale (ADHD-RS), and their parents completed the Korean Adult ADHD scale (K-AADHDS) and the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI). Results : The parental K-AADHDS scores were not associated with the ADHD-RS total score and the subscale scores of their siblings. The most potent variable related to the ADHD-RS total score was the maternal self-directedness, and the second was the maternal persistence. The maternal self-directedness was the variable that was most correlated with the hyperactivity/impulsivity subscale scores of the ADHD-RS. Conclusion : The results suggest that the paternal ADHD symptoms may not be related to the ADHD symptoms of boys with ADHD. Higher maternal self-directedness and persistence may decrease overall the ADHD symptoms of these boys, and higher maternal self-directedness itself may predict lower hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms of the boys with ADHD.

Whether the left ventricular (LV) mass index (LVMI) and LV volumetric parameters are associated independently with natriuretic peptide levels is unclear in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Therefore, we investigated which parameters have an independent relationship with N-terminal pro-B type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels in HCM patients using echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR). A total of 103 patients with HCM (82 men, age 53 ± 12 years) were evaluated. Echocardiographic evaluations included left atrial volume index (LAVI) and early diastolic mitral inflow E velocity to early annular Ea velocity ratio (E/Ea). LVMI, maximal wall thickness and LV volumetric parameters were measured using CMR. The median value of NT-proBNP level was 387.0 pg/ml. The mean NT-proBNP level in patients with non-apical HCM (n = 69; 36 patients with asymmetric septal hypertrophy, 11 with diffuse, and 22 with mixed type) was significantly higher than in those with apical HCM (n = 34, P < 0.001). NT-proBNP level was negatively correlated with LV end-diastolic volume (LVEDV) (r = -0.263, P = 0.007) and positively with LVMI (r = 0.225, P = 0.022) and maximal wall thickness (r = 0.495, P < 0.001). Among the echocardiographic variables, LAVI (r = 0.492, P < 0.001) and E/Ea (r = 0.432, P < 0.001) were correlated with NT-proBNP. On multivariable analysis, non-apical HCM, increased maximal wall thickness and LAVI were independently related with NT-proBNP. Severity of LV hypertrophy and diastolic parameters might be important in the elevation of NT-proBNP level in HCM. Therefore, further evaluation of these parameters in HCM might be warranted.

The larvicidal activities of 11 Myrtaceae essential oils and their components against Aedes aegypti were tested by the immersion method. We also tested the acute toxicity of 4 active oils and their components against the water flea, Daphnia magna. Further, the aqueous residues of these oils and their components were determined at 2 and 7 days after suspending in water. Among the 11 oils tested, 0.1 mg/mL of Melaleucalinariifolia, M. dissitiflora, M. quinquenervia, and Eucalyptus globulus oils showed strong larvicidal activity against A. aegypti. Among the test compounds, allyl isothiocyanate, γ-terpinene, p-cymene, (+)-limonene, (-)-limonene, γ-terpinene, and (E)-nerolidol showed strong larvicidal activity against A. aegypti. The acute toxicity test revealed M. linariifolia was the most toxic to D. magna. Among test compounds, allyl isothiocyanate was the most toxic to D. magna. Two days after treatment, the residues of M. dissitiflora, M. linariifolia, M. quinquenervia, and E. globulus oils in water were 55.4, 46.6, 32.4, and 14.8%, respectively. Low concentrations of allyl isothiocyanate, γ -terpinene, p-cymene, (-)-limonene, (+)-limonene, and γ-terpinene were detected in the water at 2 days after treatment. Therefore, Myrtaceae essential oils and their components could be developed as control agents against mosquito larvae.

Background: Exhaled condensates contain inflammatory biomarkers; however, theirroles in the clinical field have been under-investigated. Methods: We prospectively enrolled subjects admitted to pulmonology clinics. Wecollected exhaled breath condensates (EBC) and analysed the levels of six and 12biomarkers using conventional and multiplex enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, respectively. Results: Among the 123 subjects, healthy controls constituted the largest group (81participants; 65.9%), followed by the preserved ratio impaired spirometry group (21patients; 17.1%) and the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) group (21patients; 17.1%). In COPD patients, platelet derived growth factor-AA exhibited strongpositive correlations with COPD assessment test (ρ=0.5926, p=0.0423) and COPD-specificversion of St. George’s Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ-C) score (total, ρ=0.6725,p=0.0166; activity, ρ=0.7176, p=0.0086; and impacts, ρ=0.6151, p=0.0333). GranzymeB showed strong positive correlations with SGRQ-C score (symptoms, ρ=0.6078,p=0.0360; and impacts, ρ=0.6007, p=0.0389). Interleukin 6 exhibited a strong positivecorrelation with SGRQ-C score (activity, ρ=0.4671, p=0.0378). The absolute serum eosinophiland basophil counts showed positive correlations with pro-collagen I alpha 1(ρ=0.6735, p=0.0164 and ρ=0.6295, p=0.0283, respectively). In healthy subjects, forcedexpiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1)/forced vital capacity demonstrated significantcorrelation with CC chemokine ligand 3 (CCL3)/macrophage inflammatory protein 1alpha (ρ=0.3897 and p=0.0068). FEV1 exhibited significant correlation with CCL11/eotaxin(ρ=0.4445 and p=0.0017). Conclusion: Inflammatory biomarkers in EBC might be useful to predict quality of lifeconcerning respiratory symptoms and serologic markers. Further studies are needed.
Evaluation of HER-2/neu status by real-time quantiiative PCR in malignant cartilaginous tumors
PARK, HYE-RIM,KIM, YOUN-WHA,JUNG, WOON WON,KIM, HYUN SOOK,K. KRISHNAN UNIN,PARK, YONG KOO KYUNG HEE UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER 2005 고황의학상 수상논문집 Vol.21-22 No.-
The expression of HER-2/neu has been proposed to be a prognostic indicator in osteosarcoma. To clarify the actual frequency of HER-2/neu expression in primary malignant cartilaginous tumors, we examined 89 cases comprising 17 conventional chondrosarcomas, 33 mesenchymal chondrosarcomas, and 39 clear cell chondrosarcomas. We used real-time PCR (LightCycler) assay to quantify the HER-2/neu gene status. The crossing point of HER-2 in normal control bone was 27.77. The crossing points of HER-2 in conventional, mesenchymal, and clear cell chondrosarcomas were 28.48±1.79, 27.74±3.02, 28.57±1.54, respectively. In conclusion, the amplification and overexpression of the HER-2/neu oncogene is absent or at least very rare in malignant cartilaginous tumors. The level of expression of HER-2/neu was similar in all cartilaginous tumor types.
