We analyzed records at Chonnam university hospital from Sep. 1. 1993 to Aug. 31. 1996 to assess clinical significance of the foreign body in the gastrointestinal tract. There were 133 episodes consisting of 79 pediatric and 54 adult patients as possible to review. In the pediatric patients, the coin was the most common cause of foreign body ingestion, while adult patients were usually caused by bones and meat. We removed foreign bodies in the oral cavity and oropharynx in 12 cases using direct laryngopharyngoscpy and forcep. Endoscopy was performed successfully in 47 of 51 patients in which was attempted; there were two complications composed of an aspiration pneumonia and a mediastinitis due to esophageal perforation. There were spontaneous passage of foreign bodies in 48 cases. We observed complications in 6 cases in which 4 cases needed operations due to complications. Foreign bodies which pass into the stomach can be observed for development of complications, as 94% of foreign bodies which reach the stomach spontaneously pass. Only 4 patients required interventions, which was done without mortality.

In this paper, we implemented learning system and categorization system for categorizing internet documents. Learning system uses back propagation algorithm of neural network and, categorization system categorizes documents by using learning data from learning system. Web agent was used for retrieving documents from internet. We set 90 categories for learning and categorization. We evaluate the performance of learning and categorization system. Also, in this paper, we compare documents categorization performance to similarity measure of linear document vector.

Prevertebral soft tissue swelling of cervical spine lateral radiogram is well known as an indirect evidence of occult cervical spine injury. But the clinical and statistical value of it has been of debate. We tried to analyse the value of cervical prevertebral soft tissue width as a screening test for cervical spine injury by comparison of two categorized study groups; the control group, traumatized patients without cervical spine injury and the injury and the injury group, traumatized patients with bony cervical injury. The injury group consisted of patients admitted between September 1993 and December 1994 with an ED diagnosis of bony cervical injury. The control group consisted of patients admitted between January 1994 and June 1994 who received cervical spine lateral radiograph because of suspicion of cervical spine injury or as a routine check. In both group, we sampled the patients who received cervical spine lateral rediograph within 24 hours after injury and excluded the patients less than 15 years old and more than 65 years old, In the control group, we confirmed the patients had no problem in cervical spine of follow-up. 101 control patients and 68 injury patients were identified. The injury group was further divided into two subgroups: those with injuries at C1-C3 to the upper injury subgroup and those with injuries at C4-C7 to the lower injury sub group. The prevertebral soft tissue widths of injury group were larger than of control group at C2(mean 6.1mm versus 4.5mm) and also at C6(mean 13.4mm versus 11.2mm). Especially upper injury subgroup had quite large value of C2 prevertebral soft tissue width(mean 14.1mm). Nevertheless, both in C2 and C6, there is no cutoff value with acceptable sensitivity and specificity as a screening test. But the 7mm at C2 and 14mm at C6 had high specificity(90%) and were thought to be a good radiologic indicators of further evaluation.

The evaluation of patients with microscopic hematuria after blunt abdominal trauma has become controversial. We tested the hypothesis that renal contusion can be diagnosed clinically and that these patients do not require radiographic evaluation. To evaluate the association of microscopic hematuria without shock and with renal injury, we reviewed the medical records of 252 patients following blunt abdominal trauma. Microscopic hematuria without shock was noted in 58 of 252 patients. Of the 58 patients 52 had renal contusion, 4 had renal laceration, 1 had a renal rupture and 1 had renal pedicle injury. All of the patients with renal contusions experienced no complications from nonoperative management. But, avoiding a radiopraphic evaluation in patients with blunt renal trauma plus microscopic hematuria and no shock would miss a few cases of severe renal injury.

Hybrid nanoparticles (NPs) consisting of an n-type CdSe/ZnS quantum dot (QD) as a core and p-type pi-conjugate molecules as a shell were fabricated, and their nanoscale photoluminescence (PL) and photoresponsive molecular electronic characteristics were investigated. pi-Conjugated macromolecular dioctyloxybenzodithiophene-based polythiophene (P3000) or a single carbazole (CB) molecule with insulating molecular blocks were attached to the QD surface. The nanoscale PL characteristics for the single QD were drastically changed through close contact with P3000 owing to energy and charge transfer effects. However, for the hybrid QD-CB NP, the PL of the QD was dominant because of weak energy transfer resulting from the relatively longer insulating molecular block between the QD and the CB molecule. From time-resolved PL spectra, the exciton lifetimes of the QD in the hybrid QD-P3000 and QD-CB NPs were clearly different because of a variation in the energy transfer rate. The photocurrents of the single hybrid QD-P3000 NP were considerably higher and actively responded to both forward and reverse biases due to the energy and charge transfer effects, while those of the single QD-CB NP exhibited diode characteristics. The QD-based hybrids show distinct nanoscale PL features and photoresponsive molecular electronic characteristics depending on the structures of pi-conjugated molecules.

<P><I>Celtis choseniana</I> is the traditional plant used at Korea as a herbal medicine to ameliorate inflammatory responses. Although<I> Celtis choseniana</I> has been traditionally used as a herbal medicine at Korea, no systemic research has been conducted on its anti-inflammatory activity. Therefore, the present study explored an anti-inflammatory effect and its underlying molecular mechanism using<I> Celtis choseniana </I>methanol extract (Cc-ME) in macrophage-mediated inflammatory responses.<I> In vitro</I> anti-inflammatory activity of Cc-ME was evaluated using RAW264.7 cells and peritoneal macrophages stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), pam3CSK4 (Pam3), or poly(I:C).<I> In vivo</I> anti-inflammatory activity of Cc-ME was investigated using acute inflammatory disease mouse models, such as LPS-induced peritonitis and HCl/EtOH-induced gastritis. The molecular mechanism of Cc-ME-mediated anti-inflammatory activity was examined by Western blot analysis and immunoprecipitation using whole cell and nuclear fraction prepared from the LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells and HEK293 cells. Cc-ME inhibited NO production and mRNA expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase (COX-2), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-<I>α</I>) in the RAW264.7 cells and peritoneal macrophages induced by LPS, pam3, or poly(I:C) without cytotoxicity. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis showed that Cc-ME contained anti-inflammatory flavonoids quercetin, luteolin, and kaempferol. Among those, the content of luteolin, which showed an inhibitory effect on NO production, was highest. Cc-ME suppressed the NF-<I>κ</I>B signaling pathway by targeting Src and interrupting molecular interactions between Src and p85, its downstream kinase. Moreover, Cc-ME ameliorated the morphological finding of peritonitis and gastritis in the mouse disease models. Therefore, these results suggest that Cc-ME exerted<I> in vitro</I> and<I> in vivo</I> anti-inflammatory activity in LPS-stimulated macrophages and mouse models of acute inflammatory diseases. This anti-inflammatory activity of Cc-ME was dominantly mediated by targeting Src in NF-<I>κ</I>B signaling pathway during macrophage-mediated inflammatory responses.</P>

To investigate the ecological emergence of pine sawyer beetle adult, it was examined the escape time and period and daily escape according to the tree species at Cheongwon, Chungbuk from 2006 to 2008. In the emergence chamber with non-shading treatment, the adults began to escape on May 6 in Pine and Korean white pine, May 13 in Japanese larch, and the last day of emergence was examined the beginning to Middle of June in Pine tree, middle to last of June in Korean white pine, last of May in Japanese larch, it showed the difference among tree species. In the emergence chamber with shade treatment, the first day of emergence of adult was delayed the eleven to sixteen days and showed lower 2.22℃ in temperature compare to the emergence chamber with non-shading treatment. Escape period did not show the difference between males and females. Daily emergence was escaped throughout 24 hrs. Number of emergence adult in daily hours was highest emerged with 22.8% in 12-14:00 and lowest in 06-08:00. Among escaped adults from shaded chamber in 2007, ratio of the adults of one generation per year was showed 98.8% and ratio of one generation in two year was observed 1.1 % in 2008. From 2006 to 2008, sex ratio of emerged adult from Korean white pine was showed 0.53-0.58 and its average was 0.54.
