OMNI Ratings of Perceived Exertion Scale at Ventilatory Breakpoint in Adults

The purpose of the study was to identify a standardized RPE zone equivalent to the ventilatory breakpoint(Vpt) in young who varied in physical activity level to be useful for both prescription and self-regulation of aerobic exercise intensity. Thirty-two young adults(13 females & 19 males), aged 25-29 years participated in the current study. During a graded exercise test(GXT) on a cycle ergometer, RPE was measured using both the OMNI-Cycle Scale(0-10) and the Borg Scale(6-20). Heart rate, blood pressure, ventilation and oxygen consumption were measured during the GXT, and Vpt was calculated(%VO2peak). The mean value of VO2peak for females was 29.9 ± 8.7 ml/kg/min, and the mean value of VO2peak for males was 33.8 ± 6.3 ml/kg/min. The mean Vpt for females was 70.5%VO2peak, and the mean Vptfor males was 70.1%VO2peak. The mean RPE at Vpt was 6.1 ± 1.3 with the OMNI Scale and 14 ± 1.5 with the Borg Scale. RPE at the Vpt measured by both the OMNI and Borg Scales did not differ between genders. The findings of the current study support the use of a standardized RPE zone as an indicator of the ventilatory breakpoint in young adults using the OMNI-Cycle Perceived Exertion Scale.

The purpose of this study was to verify whether rating of perceived exertion scale as the estimate value of heart rate per minute maintains its accuracy and interval scale. To achieve the objective of this research, heart rate per minute of 32 women(age: 21.13±0.49, BMI: 19.86±1.90) students attending the department of physical education of D University was measured simultaneously by using BPES and POLAR heart rate monitor (applying Bruce protocol) at interval of 1 minute from 30 seconds after the commencement of movement load to measure the maximum oxygen intake quantity to the moment until they can no longer exercise. To check whether BPES accurately estimates heart rate, technical error of measurement (TEM) was calculated between the average heart rate per minute measured at each stage of BPES and the heart rate measured by POLAR which was used as basic measurement. Then, Rasch rating scale model was used to verify the interval scale of BPES. The analysis showed relation of 98(6), 105(7), 107(8), 114(9), 114(10), 128(11), 131(12), 149(13), 156(14), 168(15), 170(16), 180(17), 181(18), 188(19), 193(20) between average heart rate per minute at each state (6~20) of BPES and the stage of BPES. The correlation(r) between them was .99, very high value and TEM was relatively high, showing 13.93bpm(%TEM: 10.11%). Applying Rasch model(FACET 2.7) to verify interval scale, logit score at each stage was -1.51(6), -1.18(7), -1.1(8), -0.86(9), -0.74(10), -0.55(11), -0.38(12), -0.04(13), 0.18(14), 0.49(15), 0.7(16), 0.92(17), 1.11(18), 1.24(19), 1.69(20) at each stage of BPES. The rank coincided with BPES, but it was proven that each stage of BPES did not maintain interval scale. Thus, it is required to pay attention when using BPES as interval scale or utilizing it to predict heart rate per minute.
중량부하 운동시 세트간 휴식 중 산소 추가섭취가 운동자각도 및 시각적 통증정도에 미치는 영향

본 연구는 중량부하 운동시 세트간 휴식 중 산소 추가섭취가 운동자각도 및 시각적 통증정도에 미치는 영향을 확인하고자 하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 20대 남자 대학생 7명을 중량부하 운동 10종목 실시에 따른 세트 간 휴식 중 산소 추가섭취군과 비섭취군으로 나누어 반복 측정하였으며, 측정항목으로는 운동자각도 및 시각적 통증정도로 하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 운동자각도의 변화에서는 Bench press, Dead lift, Lat pull down, Shoulder press, Chest press 의 종료 후 세트 간 휴식에서 산소 추가섭취군이 비섭취군에 비해 유의하게 낮게 나타났으며(p<.05), 시각적 통증정도 의 변화에서는 Leg extension, Dead lift, Lat pull down, Shoulder press의 종료 후 세트 간 휴식에서 산소추가섭취 군이 비섭취군에 비해 유의하게 낮게 나타났다(p<.05). 본 연구를 통해 중량부하 운동시 세트간 휴식 중 산소 추가섭취 가 운동자각도 및 시각적 통증정도를 낮추는데 도움이 되는 것을 확인하였다. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of supplemental oxygen intake of rest between sets during resistance exercise on Ratings of Perceived Exertion(RPE) and Visual Analogue Scale(VAS). The subjects for the study were 7 male university student, and the experiments were repeated in the supplemental oxygen intake group and non intake group. The ratings of perceived exertion and visual analogue scale measured in all the subjects after rest between sets during resistance exercise. The findings of this study were as follows; The supplemental oxygen intake group was significantly lower ratings of perceived exertion after sets of bench press, dead lift, lat pull down, shoulder press, chest press and the supplemental oxygen intake group was significantly lower visual analogue scale of leg extension, dead lift, lat pull down, shoulder press. Consequently, the supplemental oxygen intake of rest between sets during resistance exercise will be effectively appeared to decreasing ratings of perceived exertion and visual analogue scale.
운동자각도를 활용한 간편하고 실용적인 1-RM 추정 방법

The aim of the study was to propose a simple and practical 1-repetition maximum (RM) estimation method based on the Borg"s rating of perceived exertion (RPE) scale. Since conventional indirect 1-RM estimation methods used monotonous predictive equations disregarding subjects" individual characteristics, they have limits on predictive accuracy. Further they require expensive devices such as bench press and leg press to measure 1-RM using the equations. In order to cope with these problems, the Borg"s RPE scale-based 1-RM estimation method has been proposed. The proposed method first estimates a linear regression equation between the Borg"s RPE and intensity of exercise(e.g., weight for leg press and brake load for cycle ergometer) using the least square method. This makes the 1-RM estimation adaptive to different subjects" individual characteristics. The 1-RM is then estimated by inputting the 20, which is the maximum value of the Borg"s RPE scale, into the regression equation. The proposed method is tested on a database where the intensity of exercise and the RPE are collected simultaneously during the leg press and the cycle ergometer exercises. The results are promising, suggesting that the method provides a simpler but accurate 1-RM estimation in real applications.

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the cardiac rehabilitation effect in view of rating of perceived exertion(RPE). In this study, we observed RPE change after aerobic exercise training in graded symptom limited exercise test(GXT). Methods and materials : The 20 patients of coronary artery obstructive disease were trained for six weeks, 3 times per week, totally 18 sessions with treadmill and bike. The GXTs using modified Bruce protocol were performed before and after cardiac rehabilitation Results : RPE, 6-20 Borg scale, was reduced after cardiac rehabilitation in modified Bruce protocol 2-5 stages(p<0.05). Heart rate was cardiac rehabilitation in modified Bruce protocol 2-5 stages(p<0.05). Heart rate was reduced after cardiac rehabilitation in modified Bruce protocol 1-5 stages(p<0.05). MET was reduced after cardiac rehabilitation in modified bruce protocol 1-3 stages(p<0.05). Conclusions : RPE was reduced after cardiac rehabilitation. Cardiac rehabilitation can make the patients do activity of daily living with less effort after exercise than before exercise.
