Vol.21 No.3

Centered around many biophysical science fields, diverse academic disciplines have verified their institutionalized scholarly standings. However, little attempts have been made in the field of sport sociology. This study adopted the impact factor of the SCI/SCIE/SSCI lists, and compared different peer-reviewed journals of sport sociology to those of the related fields including sport/exercise studies, sociology, and sociology-related social sciences. The present study employed a secondary data-analysis utilizing the existing data sources from the Thompson Scientific. Then, descriptive analyses were computed to analyze the collected data. As a result, the SSJ and the JSSI, considered the two prominent sport sociology journals, carried impact factors of .7 and .8, respectively. Those impact factors were lower than the aggregate impact factor of the sport/exercise science category (1.17) as well as sociology/sociology-related social sciences (.8). Only two sport sociology journals were found from the SCIE and SSCI lists. This might provide valuable lessons to scholars in the field of sport sociology. Further, given the fact that neither Korean sport/exercise science journal nor Korean sport sociology journal was included in the SCI/SCIE/SSCI lists, the Korean scholars should take that as constructive feedbacks. The results of this study should not be interpreted from the arithmetic standpoint; it, however, should be interpreted in terms of how journals of sport sociology can be more valuable and competitive under its unique circumstance. In conclusion, this study provides implications as to an appropriate understanding of the impact factor with all the concerns and considerations taken into account.

Vol.16 No.2

This study has four research goals. First, this study investigates the influence of eight Korean marketing journals. Previous ranking studies on Korean marketing journals collected citation data of only one or two journals, and their results were fundamentally influenced by self-citation. Our analysis controls self-citation by utilizing citation data of more than 1,000 journals included in Korea Citation Index (hereafter, KCI). Second, this study offers an updated report on the rankings of international marketing journals. While many studies have examined the rankings of international marketing journals, extensive reviews are rarely found. This study provides useful information by comparing the results of existing studies with various types of analysis based on recent data. Third, this study raises extensive criticism against Impact Factor and Kor-Factor (a new journal influence measure that is sponsored and published by KCI). Finally, this study introduces recent advances in journal influence indicators. We used Thompson Reuters' 2008 Journal Citation Report, Scopus' 2008 SJR indicator and SNIP for analyzing international marketing journals' influence. This study examined eight Korean marketing journals, that is, Journal of Korean Marketing Association (JKMA), Journal of Consumer Studies (JCS), Journal of Marketing Management Research (JMMR), The Korean Journal of Advertising, Korean Marketing Journal, Journal of Distribution Research, Advertising Research, and Journal of Global Academy of Marketing Science. Citing and cited data of the journals were from KCI. Impact Factor failed to produce good descriptions of international marketing journals' rankings. For example, JCR scored only tenth in 2008 Impact Factor, lagged behind JCP, JPIM, JCA, JIM, and IJRM. Five-year Article Influence and h-j index report the most reasonable rankings. Their Top Four list coincides and consists of JM, JMR, JCR and JCR. Their Top Ten list also coincides and includes JCP, JIcM, JAMS, JPIM, IJRM and JR. In Korean marketing journals, JKMA ranked top in all of the influence measures. JCS and JMMR occupied second and third, respectively.

      • Increase in frequency of citation by SCIE journals of non-Medline journals after listing in an open access full-text database

2014 Science Editing Vol.1 No.1

We hypothesized that it is not open access status but rather exposure in the PubMed platform that affects citation frequency in medical journals. In November 2008, medical journals from Korea began to be added to PubMed Central (PMC). Therefore, it would be interesting to know whether or not their impact factor based on Web of Science has increased since the journals were listed in PMC/PubMed. To answer this question, a citation analysis of seven journals that have been indexed in PMC since 2008 or 2009 was done. Only non-Medline journals were selected and the impact factors of five Medline journals were compared. The impact factor was calculated via Web of Science. Journal Citation Reports (JCR) data were used if the data of the target journals were provided in JCR. Trends for the impact factors of different years were analyzed using dBSTAT ver. 5.0. There has been an increasing rates of the impact factor for the seven non-Medline journals, 1.92 in 2011 over 2010 ; 3.27 in 2010 over 2009 ; 1.12 in 2012 over 2011. As for the five Medline journals, the increasing rate in 2010 over 2009 was 1.18 ; however, those of 2011 over 2010 and 2012 over 2011 were 1.01 and 1.04 respectively. The Science Citation Index Expanded impact factor of medical journals published in Korea can be increased if those journals are published in English and listed in PMC. This is an effect of the platform in which the journals are listed and not just an effect of free access.

A Novel Journal Evaluation Metric that Adjusts the Impact Factors across Different Subject Categories

Pyo, Sujin,Lee, Woojin,Lee, Jaewook Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers 2016 Industrial Engineeering & Management Systems Vol.15 No.1

During the last two decades, impact factor has been widely used as a journal evaluation metric that differentiates the influence of a specific journal compared with other journals. However, impact factor does not provide a reliable metric between journals in different subject categories. For example, higher impact factors are given to biology and general sciences than those assigned to other traditional engineering and social sciences. This study initially analyzes the trend of the time series of the impact factors of the journals listed in Journal Citation Reports during the last decade. This study then proposes new journal evaluation metrics that adjust the impact factors across different subject categories. The proposed metrics possibly provides a consistent measure to mitigate the differences in impact factors among subject categories. On the basis of experimental results, we recommend the most reliable and appropriate metric to evaluate journals that are less dependent on the characteristics of subject categories.

Clinics in Orthopedic Surgery's Evolution into an International Journal Based on Journal Metrics

2016 Clinics in Orthopedic Surgery Vol.8 No.2

This article is aimed at providing evidence of increased international recognition of Clinics in Orthopedic Surgery (CiOS) based on journal metrics. Since 7 years have passed since its launch in 2009, it is time to reflect on the journal’s efforts to be recognized as a top-notch journal. The following journal metrics were analyzed from the journal’s homepage and Web of Science Core Collection database: number of citable and noncitable articles; number of original articles supported by grants; editorial board members’ countries; authors’ countries; citing authors’ countries; source titles of citing articles; impact factor; total citations; comparison of impact factor with 3 Science Citation Index Expanded journals; and Hirsch index (H-index). Of the total 392 articles, 378 were citable articles (96.4%). Of the total 282 original articles, 52 (18.4%) were supported by research grants. The editorial board members were from 13 countries. Authors were from 20 countries. The number of countries of citing authors was 66. The number of source titles of citing articles was more than 100. The total citations of CiOS have increased from 0 in 2009 to 374 in 2015. The impact factors without self-citations of CiOS were the greatest among 4 Asian journals in 2013 and 2014. The 2015 impact factor was calculated as 0.79 in January 2016. The H-index was 13. CiOS can be considered to have reached the level of top-notch journal in the orthopedic field based on journal metrics. The inclusion of the journal in PubMed Central appears to have increased international relevance of the journal.

Vol.27 No.1

The journal impact factor(JIF) of the Thomson Reuters(ISI) has been widely used to assess the impact of journal as well as its quality. However, the JIF contains its critical limitation, in which it does not measure the impact of journal but the average impact of articles in journal. Besides significant number of problems of the JIF has been noticed. Furthermore, given the limited coverage of domestic citation index database in comparison to those of international citation index, it is necessary to apply a more appropriate index with a high level of discriminating power. This study, therefore, aims to introduce some practical methods to measure the impact of domestic journals by using the Hirsch-type indices. As the Hirsch-type indices has been often used for overcoming the limitations of the JIF in worldwide, we hope that our research outcome offers an effective alternative to gauge the impact of journals more accurately. Consequently, using the variations of the h-index(hs-index, fs-index) or the sum of issue level(issue based h-index, issue based f-index), we argue that it would improve the discrimination capacity of the Hirsch-type indices significantly and that we can measure the impact of domestic journals more clearly.

      • Pattern of reference types and impact factors of journals in the Korea Citation Index according to academic discipline

2015 Science Editing Vol.2 No.1

The Korea Citation Index (KCI) is a citation database for scholarly journals from Korea, the number of journals of which is 2,168 in January, 2015. This article aims to analyze the pattern of reference types and impact factors of journals in the KCI according to academic discipline. Journals of the KCI were classified according to academic discipline: humanities, arts and sports, social science, science, and multi-disciplinary science. Science journals were sub-classified as natural science, engineering, agriculture & fisheries, and medical health. The pattern of reference types was classified as journal article, book, report/thesis/internet, and others. Changing patterns of the two-year impact factor were described according to the publication year of journals in each discipline. The reference type of each discipline in 2010 showed different patterns. In humanities, the portion of books out of cited literatures was 51.1%, while the portion of books in natural science, engineering, medical health, and agriculture & fisheries fields were 11.0%, 10.0%, 7.0%, and 11.0%, respectively. In social science, the portion of journal articles was 53.1% and books 27.3%. In medical health, the portion of journal article was 87.6%. Journals’ average impact factors in 2011 were 0.9 for social science, 0.8 for arts and sports, 0.55 for interdisciplinary, 0.5 for agriculture and fisheries and humanities, 0.45 for natural science, 0.32 for engineering, and 0.3 for medical health. Researchers in humanities in Korea use books as a primary source of references, while those in other disciplines use journals as a major source of references. Higher impact factors in social science journals and lower ones in science journals mean that social scientists in Korea deal with mainly domestic topics, while scientist deal with global topics.

What is the position of Clinical and Experimental Reproductive Medicine in its scholarly journal network based on journal metrics?

Huh, Sun The Korean Society for Reproductive Medicine 2014 Clinical and Experimental Reproductive Medicine Vol.41 No.4

Objective: Clinical and Experimental Reproductive Medicine (CERM) converted its language to English only beginning with the first issue of 2011. From that point in time, one of the goals of the journal has been to become a truly international journal. This paper aims to identify the position of CERM in its scholarly journal network based on the journal's metrics. Methods: The journal's metrics, including citations, countries of author affiliation, and countries of citing authors, Hirsch index, and proportion of funded articles, were gathered from Web of Science and analyzed. Results: The two-year impact factor of 2013 was calculated at 0.971 excluding self-citation, which corresponds to a Journal Citation Reports ranking of 85.9% in the category of obstetrics and gynecology. In 2012, 2013, and 2014, the total citations were 17, 68, and 85, respectively. Authors from nine countries contributed to CERM. Researchers from 25 countries cited CERM in their articles. The Hirsch index was six. Out of 88 original articles, 35 studies received funds (39.8%). Conclusion: Based on the journal metrics, changing the journal language to English was found to be successful in promoting CERM to international journal status.
