This paper is to examine the affiliation of Yi Sang’s Twelfth December and Emile Zola’s Experimental Novel by Edward W. Said’s Traveling Theory. Yi Sang wrote it with the main character ‘he’ as alta ego, Yi Sang himself. He dealt with the social background of 1920s in it. Naturalism in literature deals with the evil aspects of human life and is in varying degrees deterministic view. This current thought was affected to Yi Sang with various trends via Japan from Europe. The naturalistic writer uses the knowledge and attitudes of current science in his depiction of human life. He described a segment of human existence according to the laws of scientific causality. The writer analyzes his characters and their social situations as the effects proceeding from various combinations of physical, emotional, and environmental causes. After all man was a phenomenon caused by certain hereditary and environmental forces. As we read it by comparative literary theory we should read the work according to context. Consequently, we can understand Yi Sang wrote the social situation in December Twelfth with Zola’s limited determinism in the 1930s’ colonial situation in Korea.

인간, 과학기술과 환경의 대한 이해: 사고와 안전에 대한 확률론적 시각과 결정론적 시각의 토착 문화적 분석

This paper provides a comparative analysis of the probabilistic versus deterministic view of accident and safety using the indigenous and cultural perspectives. Death and injury due to accidents is the leading cause of preventable death in most countries, including Korea. The first part of this paper delineates the limitation of the linear, deterministic model that has been adopted in social and applied sciences. The transactional model, advocated by indigenous psychology, is provided to understand the probabilistic nature of accident and safety at home, in the workplace and in society. Second, factors related to accidents and safety are reviewed. Third, application of the probabilistic model for preventing accidents and promoting safety in Korea is outlined. 이 연구에서는 토착 문화심리학을 토대로 사고와 안전에 대한 확률론적인 시각과 결정론적인 시각을 비교 분석하였다. 한국뿐만 아니라 대부분의 선진국이나 개발도상국에서 사고로 인한 사망과 재해는 예방이 가능하다. 이 연구의 첫 번째 부분에서는 사회과학과 응용과학에서 채택되어온 선형의 결정론적인 모형의 한계에 대해 설명하였다. 가정 직장과 사회에서 발생하는 사고와 안전의 확률론적인 속성에 대한 이해를 위해, 토착 문화심리학에서 주장되어온 상호작용 모형이 제안되었다. 두 번째로는 사고와 안전에 관련된 요소들을 검토하였다. 세 번째로는 한국사회에서 사고를 예방하고 안전을 증진하기 위해 확률론적 모형의 활용에 대해 설명하였다.

Laurence Sterne has been radically revaluated since the rise of modernism, and the tendency to valorize his artistic achievements and thoughts gains more force in the postmodern period. This paper examines Tristram Shandy to clarify what makes his work so peculiarly modern, and what are the implications thereof. It is shown that, in this inventive novel, Sterne, imbibing epistemological subjectivism from Locke, not only probes the central issues of modernity such as the monadic state of being or the separation between the subject and the outer world, but also nimbly explores the subtle inner depth of human consciousness. Then this paper takes a glance at the insufficiency of ``sentimentalism`` as a remedy for the monadic state of being, and goes on to argue that the narrator Tristram, who might be considered by some as a model of new identity beyond solipsism, evinces some questionable modern symptoms of the loss of the integral unity of being, as hinted by his deterministic world view or his unwholesome attitudes to death and sex. This paper concludes by indicating a few basic artistic traits and implied problems shared by Sterne and the modern novelists.
