Multilateral Tariff Negotiations when Production is Fixed

This paper contributes to analysis of the extent to which multilateral trading agreements reached under GATT can liberalize the world economy. Its main conclusion is that free trade is not sustainable if production is fixed exogenously and utility is non-transferable. If production is fixed and utility is transferable, free trade is possible but is not necessary for maximization of welfare.

중남미 변혁운동의 전기를 가져왔던 멕시코혁명(1910~1920)은 멕시코의 근대화와 국가결속의 토대를 마련하였으며, 그 영향은 정치, 경제 및 문화를 포함하는 전 부문에 걸쳐 광범위하게 나타난다. 경제적 측면에서는, 사회의 광범한 부문에 걸쳐 개혁이 단행되었던 까르데나스 통치기에 이루어진 경제성장으로 1935~1981년에 연평균 6%의 경제성장률을 기록하였으며, 6배 가까운 인구의 증가로 산업구조의 변화가 일어나 도시화와 공업화가 가속화되었다. 혁명 초기에 정체되었던 농업부문도 까르데나스의 개혁으로 눈부신 성장을 이룩하였으며, 혁명의 레마를 실현한 과감한 농지개혁은 사회적 평등과 생산력 증대에 긍정적 역할을 하였다. 정치사회적인 측면에서는, '아얄라 계획'이나 '1971년 헌법' 등을 통해 꾸준히 정치사회적 발전의 토대를 구축하였는데, 특히 혁명정부 초기에 교육, 노동조합, 개인적·사회적 권리와 의무에 대해 혁명의 이상을 반영하는 일련의 새로운 조치를 취함으로써 멕시코의 정치사회적 근대화와 자유신장에 결정적 역할을 하였다. 또한 멕시코혁명은 멕시코인의 정체성과 근원에의 끝없는 탐구의 길을 열어주었으며, 문화적인 면에서도 뚜렷한 자취를 남겼다. 특히, 소설을 비롯한 문학과 회화에서 두드러져, 알폰소 레예스, 마르띤 루이스 구스만, 바스꼰셀로스, 마리아노 아수엘라, 호세 루벤 로메로 등 저명한 멕시코혁명 작가와 디에고 리베라, 오로스꼬, 시께이로스 등 세계회화사에 한 획을 그은 벽화화가를 낳았다. 이처럼 국가사회의 전부분에 걸쳐 근대화과정의 전기를 마련하면서 멕시코의 국가적 면모의 확립에 절대적으로 기여한 멕시코혁명은 이미 사멸된 먼 과거의 일이 아니다. 멕시코혁명은 근대화와 민주화를 위한 새로운 방향의 모색에 있어서 역사를 이끌어갈 살아있는 힘으로 남아있다.

El madrigalete que Don Quijote canta en la noche tras la cerdosa aventura y la unidad narrativa en que aparece nos ofrece en forma condensada una visión del interior del caballero en toda esta Segunda Parte de sus aventuras. Terminos como “pensamientos”, “tristeza”, “melancolia”, “temor”, “esperanza”, “oscuridad”, “luz”, aparecen en el contexto de la canción. Son terminos que se han venido repitiendo de formas distintas a lo largo de toda la novela. Y su contraste con el tono burlesco que tambien existe como telón de fondo en esta escena ayudan a comprender el sentido de esperanza y temor, vida y muerte, que ha venido siendo una constante en el alma de Don Quijote desde su Tercera Salida.
A New Way of Understanding Customs Unions

Traditional economic integration theory justifies the formation of preferential trading arrangements on political and economic grounds; but the real importance of economic interdependence has yet to be considered. This is precisely what this paper sets out to achieve: a new way of understanding customs unions which traditional theory overlooks. Specifically, this paper justifies the formation of a customs union made up of two countries as the best way of achieving those countries' economic objectives. Customs unions may be understood from this perspective alone, without having to consider them as constituting strategic commercial policies. Regionalism and multilateralism therefore, can be considered as complementary processes.(JEL: F15, F02, F13)
Strategic Distortion of the Objectives of Trade Policy

By employing a simple three-country model in which there are two exporting and one consuming country, this paper analyses the consequences of one country strategic distortion of the objectives of trade policy. It finds that though an exporting country can benefit from strategic distortion, it would be preferred that the importing country distorts its policy. Furthermore, it is found that preferential trading agreements can emerge endogenously.

Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a group of abnormalities in which obesity, insulin resistance (IR), oxidative stress, and dyslipidemia stand out. This pathology predisposes to the development of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. The ingestion of linear fructooligosaccharides (FOS) such as inulin reduces conditions such as hyperinsulinemia, increased body fat, and triglyceridemia. When FOS are esterified with fatty acids, they present emulsifying and surfactant properties; however, there are no reports of their function at the biological level. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effect of Agave tequilana Weber's FOS (AtW-FOS) and FOS esterified with lauric acid (FOS-LA) in MS markers in a rat model induced by a HFHC diet. Supplementation with AtW-FOS and FOS-LA decreased IR, improved glucose tolerance, reduced liver weight (19%), plasma triglycerides (24%), and blood pressure (16%) when compared with the untreated MS group. In conclusion, the ingestion of AtW-FOS and FOS-LA has beneficial effects in the prevention of MS alterations, showing a high potential for their application in functional foods.

This study analyzes the use of the personality metaphor in the official tourism websites developed by South American countries. The Big-Five human personality dimensions are used as a proxy to explore the intended personality projected by the countries. A multistage methodology using a combination of content analysis and correspondence analysis was used. Results reveal the existence of four main clusters based on the use of different personality traits to communicate the peculiarities of each country. However, an overall view of the results indicates that South American countries are not using in a substantial way the personality metaphor to create a strong positioning for the international tourists, and therefore the use of this new marketing tool is in its nascent stages.

The main purpose of this paper is to find the etic dimensions of beliefs towards comparative advertising (CA) and to test their relationship with global attitude and acceptance of CA in a cross-cultural setting. Samples from four linguistic and cultural different countries were used: Austria, Canada, China and Peru. The research instrument was an online questionnaire. Results uncovered three main etic belief dimensions: truthfulness and deceitfulness as societal (micro) variables, and product information as personal (micro) variable. Invariance tests indicate that the items comprising the scales proposed to measure CA beliefs, global attitude and acceptance of CA possess equivalence across the four countries. Our model shows that beliefs indirectly affect acceptance of CA, which is mediated by global attitude toward CA. Results reveal similarities and differences across countries on the magnitude and importance of the beliefs and global attitude total effects upon acceptance. Finally, results are analyzed vis-?-vis the Hofstede’s national cultural dimensions, which indicate that uncertainty avoidance and individualism/collectivism help to explain the main differences across the countries.
