Hydrothermal Synthesis of La-Mn-hexaaluminates for the Catalytic Combustion of Methane

Hydrothermal synthesis by using urea hydrolysis at 1.0~3.0MPa and 120~130℃ was employed to prepare Mn-substituted hexaaluminate catalysts for methane combustion. The results from DTA-MS demonstrated that CO^2-_3 and OH^- anions co-exist in the hydrothermal reaction. XRD reveals that the components of carbonates of carbonates and hydroxides in the hydrothermal reaction are more favorable than those in the(NH_4)_2CO_3 co-precipitation for the formation of the Mn-substituted hexaaluminate phase. After calcination at 1,200℃ for 2h, LaMnAl_11O_19 is the major phase of the catalyst prepared by the hydrothermal synthesis method while LaAlO_3 is the major one of the catalysts prepared by NH_4OH and (NH_4)_2CO_3 co-precipitation. The catalyst prepared by hydrothermal synthesis has higher activity than that prepared by NH_4OH and (NH_4)CO_3 co-precipitation. The major reason is that more Mn^2+ ions have incorporated into the hexaaluminate lattice. The effect of drying methods on the formation of hexaaluminate phase was also discussed.

Based on the reported cDNA sequences of $BmK{\alpha}Txs$, the genes encoding toxin $BmK{\alpha}Tx11$ and $BmK{\alpha}Tx15$ were amplified by PCR from the Chinese scorpion Buthus martensii Karsch genomic DNA employing synthetic oligonucleotides. Sequences analysis of nucleotide showed that an intron about 500 bp length interrupts signal peptide coding regions of $BmK{\alpha}Tx11$ and $BmK{\alpha}Tx15$. Using cDNA sequence of $BmK{\alpha}Tx11$ as probe, southern hybridization of BmK genome total DNA was performed. The result indicates that $BmK{\alpha}Tx11$ is multicopy genes or belongs to multiple gene family with high homology genes. The similarity of $BmK{\alpha}$-toxin gene sequences and southern hybridization revealed the evolution trace of $BmK{\alpha}$-toxins: $BmK{\alpha}$-toxin genes evolve from a common progenitor, and the genes diversity is associated with a process of locus duplication and gene divergence.
Effective 3-D FEM for large-scale high temperature superconducting racetrack coil

In various types of large-scale electrical applications, the number of coil turns in such machines is usually large. Electromagnetic simulation of large-scale superconducting coils (tens to hundreds of turns) is indispensable in the design process of superconducting electrical equipment. However, due to the large scale of the coil and the large aspect ratio of super-conducting material layer in HTS coated conductor, it is usually difficult or even unable to perform 3-D transient electromagnetic simulation. This paper introduces an effective 3-D electromagnetic simulation method for large-scale HTS coated conductor coil based on T-A formulation. The simulation and experimental results show that the 3-D model based on the T-A formulation using homogeneous strategy is more accurate than the traditional 2-D models. The memory usage is not sensitive to the number of turns and this model will be even more superior as the number of turns becomes larger.

Background: Tigecycline, eravacycline, and omadacycline are recently developed tetracyclines. Susceptibility of microbes to these tetracyclines and their molecular mechanisms have not been well elucidated. We investigated the susceptibility of Moraxella catarrhalis to tigecycline, eravacycline, and omadacycline and its resistance mechanisms against these tetracyclines. Methods: A total of 207 non-duplicate M. catarrhalis isolates were collected from different inpatients. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the tetracyclines were determined by broth microdilution. Tigecycline-, eravacycline-, or omadacycline-resistant isolates were induced under in vitro pressure. The tet genes and mutations in the 16S rRNA was detected by PCR and sequencing. Results: Eravacycline had a lower MIC50 (0.06 mg/L) than tigecycline (0.125 mg/L) or omadacycline (0.125 mg/L) against M. catarrhalis isolates. We found that 136 isolates (65.7%) had the tetB gene, and 15 (7.2%) isolates were positive for tetL; however, their presence was not correlated with high tigecycline, eravacycline, or omadacycline (≥1 mg/L) MICs. Compared with the initial MIC after 160 days of induction, the MICs of tigecycline or eravacycline against three M. catarrhalis isolates increased ≥eight-fold, while those of omadacycline against two M. catarrhalis isolates increased 64-fold. Mutations in the 16S rRNA genes (C1036T and/or G460A) were observed in omadacycline-induced resistant isolates, and increased RR (the genes encoding 16SrRNA (four copies, RR1-RR4) copy number of 16S rRNA genes with mutations was associated with increased resistance to omadacycline. Conclusions: Tigecycline, eravacycline, and omadacycline exhibited robust antimicrobial effects against M. catarrhalis. Mutations in the 16S rRNA genes contributed to omadacycline resistance in M. catarrhalis.

The critical current is one of the key parameters of high temperature superconducting (HTS) racetrack coils. Therefore, it is significant to calculate critical currents of HTS coils. This paper introduces a fast iterative algorithm for calculating the critical current of second generation (2G) HTS coils. This model does not need to solve long charging transients which greatly reduced the amount of calculation. To validate this model, the V-I curve of four 2G HTS double racetrack coils are measured. The effect of the silicon steel sheet on the critical current of the racetrack coil is also studied based on this algorithm.

Purpose: C-terminal binding protein 1 (CtBP1) is a transcriptional co-repressor that is overexpressed in many cancers. CtBP1 transcriptionally represses a broad array of tumor suppressors, which promotes cancer cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and resistance to apoptosis. Recent studies have demonstrated that CtBP1 is a potential target for cancer therapy. This study was designed to screen for compounds that potentially target CtBP1. Methods: Using a structure-based virtual screening for CtBP1 inhibitors, we found protocatechuic aldehyde (PA), a natural compound found in the root of a traditional Chinese herb, Salvia miltiorrhiza, that directly binds to CtBP1. Microscale thermophoresis assay was performed to determine whether PA and CtBP1 directly bind to each other. Further, clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats associated Cas9 nuclease-mediated CtBP1 knockout in breast cancer cells was used to validate the CtBP1 targeting specificity of PA. Results: Functional studies showed that PA repressed the proliferation and migration of breast cancer cells. Furthermore, PA elevated the expression of the downstream targets of CtBP1, p21 and E-cadherin, and decreased CtBP1 binding affinity for the promoter regions of p21 and E-cadherin in breast cancer cells. However, PA did not affect the expression of p21 and E-cadherin in the CtBP1 knockout breast cancer cells. In addition, the CtBP1 knockout breast cancer cells showed resistance to PA-induced repression of proliferation and migration. Conclusion: Our findings demonstrated that PA directly bound to CtBP1 and inhibited the growth and migration of breast cancer cells through CtBP1 inhibition. Structural modifications of PA are further required to enhance its binding affinity and selectivity for CtBP1.
