Expression and Prognostic Value of Matrix Metalloproteinase-7 in Colorectal Cancer

The purpose of this study was to evaluate expression and prognostic value of matrix metalloproteinase-7 (MMP-7) in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. CRC tissues and corresponding distal normal mucosa tissues of 118 CRC patients were assessed by immunohistochemistry. Correlations between MMP-7 expression, patients' clinic pathological features, and overall survival rate were analyzed. We found that positive expression of MMP-7 in CRC tissues was significantly higher than that in distal normal mucosa (61.0% vs. 39.8%, p =0.001). Poor histological differentiation, advanced clinical stage and lymph node metastasis were significantly correlated with MMP-7 expression in CRC. The overall survival rate was significantly higher in the MMP-7 negative group than the positive group (Log-rank test= 9.957, p= 0.002). MMP-7 appeared as a significant independent prognostic factor through multivariate survival analysis. Collectively, we found MMP-7 expression to be correlated with progression and metastasis of CRC and thus could be used as a predictive marker of prognosis in CRC patients.

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) esters are important, nontoxic and biodegradable non-ionic surfactants. A keyprocedure in producing PEG esters is their separation from unreacted or excess acids. We propose an adsorptionmethod using the weakly basic anion exchange resins for the separation of organic acids and PEG esters for the firsttime. With α-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol succinate (TPGS) and α-tocopheryl succinate (α-TS) as the examples ofPEG ester and organic acid, respectively, single-component equilibrium experiments revealed the great potential of thismethod. Studies on the adsorption equilibrium, thermodynamics and kinetics of α-TS onto a weakly basic anion exchangeresin were also carried out. This research is not only important for the production of TPGS, but also instructivefor the separation of other PEG-esters from the reaction mixtures.

Tungsten doped indium oxide (In2O3: W, IWO) thin films have been attracting increasing attention due to their excellent optoelectronic properties. Here, a series of IWO thin films were prepared using direct current (DC) magnetron sputtering method, by varying the sputtering pressure. Analysis revealed that the IWO films prepared under sputtering pressure of 0.4 Pa exhibited excellent optoelectronic performance, with low square resistance, resistivity, high carrier concentration and mobility. The resulting semi-transparent perovskite solar cells (ST-PSCs), with IWO fabricated under 0.4 Pa, yield a PCE of 15.71 % for the large area modules of 100 cm2 (active area 64.8 cm2).

Succinic acid is one of the platform compounds and its production via natural feedstocks has drawn worldwide concerns. To evaluate the inhibitory effects of fermentation products on the growth of Actinobacillus succinogenes 130ZT and Escherichia coli NZN111, AFP111, BL21, fermentations with addition of individual products in medium were carried out. The cell growth was inhibited when the concentrations of formate, acetate, lactate, and succinate were at range of 8.8-17.6 g/L, 10-40 g/L, 9-18 g/L, and 10-80 g/L, respectively. For these two species of bacteria, E. coli was more resistant to acid products than A. succinogenes, while both endured succinate rather than by-products. As a result of end product inhibition, succinate production yield by A. succinogenes decreased from 1.11 to 0.49 g/g glucose. Logistic and Monod mathematical models were presented to simulate the inhibition kinetics. The Logistic model was found more suitable for describing the overall synergistic inhibitory effects.
