45 ESL students with high intermediate level in an intensive English program in the States. It particularly focuses on the following three stages to see differences: (1) watching news without subtitles, (2) using subtitles during watching news, and (3) reading subtitles after watching news. The participants are chosen from high intermediate to advanced level at an ESL program of a US university and asked to take a general listening test. The listening materials for news are selected in consideration of content, length, accent of speakers since those factors play pivotal roles in the result of ESL/EFL listening comprehension. The statistical results disclose that the group provided with subtitles after viewing the news outperforms the other two groups - suggesting that using subtitles after watching news is far beneficial for ESL learners with the levels. On the other hand, being exposed to subtitles during news watch becomes distracting over listening comprehension. Identifying unclear words and expressions has also been a disturbingly burden over the phase of using subtitles during the news watching. Taking such findings into account, ESL/EFL listening pedagogy may benefit from a focus on employing appropriate listening techniques to accelerate listening proficiency especially for learners with high-intermediate to advanced level.
Area-dependent electrical characteristics of Schottky diodes fabricated on n-type GaN

The electrical characteristics of Schottky diodes fabricated on n-type GaN were investigated as a function of the contact area. A strong areal dependence was observed for all Schottky diodes, e.g., the larger the contact area, the smaller the Schottky barrier height, while the ideality factor retained a large value as high as 2.0 for all contact areas, likely due to the randomly-distributed threading dislocations observed via atomic force microscopy and/or to the plasma-induced surface states. A strong area-dependent Schottky barrier height could, therefore, be explained in terms of the barrier inhomogeneity model. In this transport regime, the Schottky characteristics exhibited an insignificant dependence on the work function of the Schottky metals; namely, Fermi level pinning occurred.

CHIMERA: A Field-Programmable Mixed-Signal IC With Time-Domain Configurable Analog Blocks

<P>This paper presents a field-programmable mixed-signal IC named CHIMERA, for low-cost and rapid prototyping of mixed-signal systems. The proposed IC implements field-programmable analog functions with time-domain configurable analog blocks (TCABs). A single TCAB can be programmed to various analog circuits, including a time-to-digital converter, digitally-controlled oscillator, digitally-controlled delay cell, digital pulse-width modulator, and phase interpolator. The TCABs convey and process analog information using the frequency, pulse width, delay, or phase of digital pulses or pulse sequences, rather than using analog voltage or current signals for reduced susceptibility to attenuation and noise. The overall CHIMERA chip also includes arrays of configurable logic blocks (CLBs) and programmable arithmetic logic units (ALUs) for programmable digital functions. By programming the functionality of the TCAB, CLB, and ALU arrays and configuring the interconnects, the chip can implement various mixed-signal systems. A prototype IC fabricated with 65-nm CMOS technology demonstrates the versatile programmability of CHIMERA by being successfully operated as a 1-GHz phase-locked loop with a 12.3-ps<SUB>rms</SUB> integrated jitter, as a 50-MS/s analog-to-digital converter with a 32.5-dB SNDR, and as a 1.2-to-0.7 V DC–DC converter with 95.5% efficiency.</P>
문화상호간 교내 거주 신입 유학생들의 역량강화 실천계획

The aim of this article concentrates on an action plan designed for newly-incoming international/-cultural residents in campus housing in Colorado State University (CSU) in the States. This action plan is needed not only for international/-cultural resident’s imminent needs to become an approved resident but for both housing staff and school authorities to better understand what the new residents’ common difficulties and how to help them in communication; thus, it can pave an avenue to influence policy making to keep sustainability in intercultural community. The action plan is specified mainly into two parts. The first part is survival English classes, and the second one is for both understanding on cultural differences along with adaptation and intercultural awareness. From the two carefully-designed parts, the present study finds that those newly-coming international/ -cultural residents enter actively into the process of getting themselves be empowered as an internationally/-culturally approved resident in the university campus housing.

대중사회를 이끌던 일방향적 의사소통은 21세기가 되면서 쌍방향적인 의사소통으로 바뀌었다. 이러한 소통의 확대를 잘 반영하고 있는 것이 ‘SNS’이다. 디지털 기기에 친숙한 청소년들에게 SNS를 이용한 학습방법의 가능성을 탐색하는 것은 의미 있는 일이다. 본 연구에서는 SNS를 활용한 사회과 블렌디드 수업모형을 개발하고, 이를 시사토론 동아리에 적용하여 모형의 보완사항을 점검하고 수정하였다. 또한 개발된 모형의 효과를 분석하여 블렌디드 러닝 모형의 장점과 한계를 제시하였다. SNS를 활용해 학생 및 교사가 소통을 확대하고 서로간의 피드백을 증가시킨다면 교실 안에서 국한된 수업이 아니라, 다양한 정보를 교환할 수 있는 온라인 공간을 마련하여 수업 효과를 극대화 할 수 있을 것이다. 이를 위해서는 교사의 수업 부담을 줄일 수 있는 효율적인 모형 개발, 비판적 사고력 이외의 수업에 미치는 효과에 관한 연구가 이어질 필요가 있다. This study focused on developing a blended learning model for social studies using SNS by applying it to a current affairs debate club, checking the drawbacks of the model and modifying them. The following steps were set in order to analyze the effect of the developed model. The Blended-Learning Model was developed to step 5 of the ADDIE model. After the class applying the developed model, this model was evaluated for improvement. Therefore, the modified model has 8 steps. ① Selecting the discussion topics ② Choosing a topic for the group ③ Guiding the discussion ④ Preparing the discussion and collecting the data ⑤ Announcing and discussing the results ⑥ Instructing ⑦ Evaluating ⑧ Feedback and reflections. In the flood of information, there was increased importance placed on critical thinking skills to find the necessary information and make a proper decision. Developing the abilities to assess the information through rational judgment is essential in the social studies cultivating civic competency. To conclude, the blended learning using SNS can help cultivate teachers to teach students using current technology.
화재시뮬레이션(FDS)을 활용한 제천스포츠센터 화재확산경로 추정에 관한 연구

2017년 제천스포츠센터 화재로 인하여 약 80명의 사상자가 발생하였다. 특히 2층과 3층에서 화재피해 형태가 상이하게 발생해 일반적인 화재사례와 차이점이 나타났다. 이후 발간된 화재백서 및 보고서 등에서는 주요 화재확산경로를 화물용 승강기로 추정하고 있다. 그러나 화재로 인한 소손 피해, CCTV 및 재실자 증언 등의 자료에 따르면 화물용 승강기가 2층과 3층에서 상이한 피해를 야기한 화재확산경로가 아닐 수 있다는 것을 시사한다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 화재확산 경로를 명확히 추정하기 위하여 화재사례 및 화재시뮬레이션을 비교하였다. 그 결과 화물용 승강기보다 주 계단이 주요 화재확산경로로서 더욱 신빙성이 있는 것으로 나타났다. In 2017, a fire at the Jecheon Sports Center resulted in approximately 80 casualties. Interestingly, the extent of fire damage on the second and third floors differed from the general type of fire damage. The white papers and reports of the Jecheon Fire Department indicated that the primary spread path of the fire was a freight elevator. However, analysis of the damage caused, CCTV footage, and victim testimonies suggested that the freight elevator may not have been the primary fire spread path on the second and third floors. Therefore, further investigation was needed to identify the cause of the fire. In this study, fire simulations were conducted using a Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) and compared with actual fire cases, which enabled us to predict the fire spread path accurately. It was found that the main stairway was more likely to have been the main fire spread path than the freight elevator.
