The report presents the operation status of and upgrade plan for the 100-MeV proton linac at the Korea Multi-purpose Accelerator Complex (KOMAC). First, an operation history of the 100-MeV linac since its commissioning in 2013, such as operation hours, user services, machine availabilities, and downtimes, is discussed. Second, the status of the beamlines in service or under development is described in a detailed manner. Finally, the Korea Spallation Neutron Source (KSNS), which is part of the upgrade plan for the 100-MeV proton linac to expand its utilization fields, is discussed.

Amyloid-β (Aβ) peptide aggregation in the brain is a key factor in Alzheimer’s disease. However, direct inhibition of β-secretase or γ-secretase proves ineffective in reducing Aβ accumulation and improving cognition in Alzheimer’s. Recent findings suggest that inhibiting gamma-secretase activating protein (GSAP) can decrease Aβ generation without affecting crucial γ-secretase substrates. Dimerization of Lep9R3LC (diLep9R3LC) was confirmed by Ellman’s test. The peptide–small interfering RNA (siRNA) complex ratio, particle size, and surface charge were analyzed using electrophoretic mobility shift assay, and dynamic light scattering, respectively. In a 3xTg mice model of Alzheimer’s disease, diLep9R3LC:siRNA complexes were intravenously administered twice a week for 8 weeks. Assessments included gene silencing, protein expression, and behavioral improvement using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, quantitative polymerase chain reaction, western blotting, Y-maze, and object recognition tests. The efficacy of Lep9R3LC dimerization was ~80% after a 3-d reaction by Ellman’s test. In N2a cells, diLep9R3LC:siGSAP complexes achieved ~70% silencing at 48 h posttransfection. In 7-month-old male 3xTg mice, GSAP knockdown was ~30% in the cortex and ~50% in the hippocampus. The behavior improved in mice treated with diLep9R3LC:siGSAP complexes, showing a 60% increase in entries and an 80% increase object recognition. A novel dipeptide, diLep9R3LC, complexed with siRNA targeting GSAP (siGSAP), efficiently delivers siRNA to the mouse brain, targeting the hippocampus. The treatment inhibits Aβ accumulation, reduces GSK-3β-associated with tau hyperphosphorylation, and improves Alzheimer’s behavior. Our findings highlight diLep9R3LC:siGSAP’s potential for Alzheimer’s and as a siRNA carrier for central nervous system-related diseases.

Mechanical properties of two kinds of auto-body steel sheets are presented over a wide range of strain rates and temperatures. Tensile tests were conducted at different strain rates and temperatures to determine constitutive models for the two materials. At high temperature, strain rate sensitivity is negative and Portevin?Le Chatelier effect is observed because of dynamic strain ageing (DSA). Widely known constitutive models such as Zerilli-Armstrong and Khan-Huang-Liang models cannot describe DSA effect. Therefore, the models are modified in order to describe material strengthening due to DSA at high temperature. The modified constitutive models give good correlations with experimental data over a wide range of strain rates and temperatures including the range in which material strengthening due to DSA occurs.

Finite element crash analysis can be a great method to design a safe and reliable car in the design process. Today, auto makers try to enhance the accuracy of crash analysis by considering spot-weld failure during the analysis because it has a great effect on the crashworthiness of a car. In this study, the effect of spot-weld failure on the crash analysis of a car is investigated. Spot-weld failure models with different failure criteria are employed to the ULSAB-AVC models and the crashworthiness is evaluated and compared for each models. The intrusion distance and the intrusion velocity of the center pillar are measured for each model after the crash analysis following US-NCAP side impact test The result shows that the crashworthiness of the ULSAB-AVC model is dramatically changed by adopting spot-weld failure models with different spot weld failure criteria.

The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has been developing a Container Inspection System (CIS) by using a dual-energy (9/6 MeV) S-band (= 2856 MHz) electron linear accelerator. The key components of the CIS are the electron linear accelerator (including an electron gun, an accelerating structure, an RF power source, cooling chillers, vacuum pumps, magnet power supplies, and two solenoid magnets with beam focusing and shielding functions), a tungsten target for X-ray generation, an X-ray collimator, a detector array, and a container moving system. Generally, in accelerators, beam focusing is mainly done by solenoids operating in the region of a few MeV to keep the shape of transverse beam symmetrically round so as to reduce the loss of electrons, which increases the beam current and the beam power. In addition, a specially-designed component is needed to protect against the radiation due to the lost electrons. In this paper, we describe the design, fabrication, and optimization of two specially- designed solenoids with focusing and radiation shielding functions for a dual-energy S-band electron linear accelerator for a CIS.
A Contrastive Pragmatic Study of Gratitude Responses Expressions

The goal of this study is to identify and contrast the pragmatic features of Korean EFL learners in the communicative act of responses to gratitude. For the current study, 12 EFL learners and five English native speakers performed role plays in six different task situations in which they carried out the speech act of gratitude responses. Eight Korean native speakers also participated in order to provide baseline intra-cultural data as a possible source of the learners’ deviant realization behaviors from target norms. The data, collected from a role-play task, were analyzed in terms of contrastive pragmatics. In the analysis, overall, recognizing the object of gratitude through acceptance was most frequently used by all three groups. However, specific uses of strategies of the EFL learners (e.g., avoiding responding to gratitude, minimizing the favor) were consistent with those of the Korean native speakers, indicative of an L1 effect. Responses to compliments were frequently entirely missing or removed when compared to those of the English native speakers. Pedagogical implications and limitations are discussed.
