        Uniformly thick tri-color filters capitalizing on an etalon with a nanostructured cavity

        <P>Highly efficient tri-color filters having uniform thickness are proposed based on an etalon tapping into a nanostructured cavity, where a hexagonal lattice of nanopillars (NPs) with a high refractive index is embedded in a base material with a low index. The nanostructured cavity is presumed to behave as a homogeneous medium, which provides a wide range for the effective refractive index in accordance with both the volume fraction of the NPs and the index contrast between the NPs and the base. Hence, for the etalon-based filters, the resonance wavelength can be efficiently tuned by simply altering the effective index rather than the thickness of the cavity, so as to span the entire visible regime including red, green, and blue (RGB) colors. In particular, a hexagonal lattice of NPs was introduced to extend the available range of effective index due to its highly flexible volume fraction. The NP-base index contrast has been pertinently maximized to achieve effective indices leading to RGB colors, to the extent that the nanostructured cavity can be safely modeled as a homogeneous medium. The proposed RGB color filters were finally designed to have an identical thickness of 240 nm by setting the diameters of the NPs at 95, 70, and 40 nm, to achieve a periodicity of 100 nm, considering that TiO2 and Al2O3 can be practically selected as the material candidate for the NPs and the base, respectively. A high transmittance of ???78% and a suitable 1 dB bandwidth of ???51??????nm were obtained for the tri-color filters, which were further confirmed to exhibit polarization-independent transfer characteristics.</P>

        Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester, a Major Component of Propolis, Suppresses High Fat Diet-Induced Obesity through Inhibiting Adipogenesis at the Mitotic Clonal Expansion Stage

        <P>In the present study, we aimed to investigate the antiobesity effect of CAPE in vivo, and the mechanism by which CAPE regulates body weight in vitro. To confirm the antiobesity effect of CAPE in vivo, mice were fed with a high fat diet (HFD) with different concentrations of CAPE for 5 weeks. CAPE significantly reduced body weight gain and epididymal fat mass in obese mice fed a HFD. In accordance with in vivo results, Oil red O staining results showed that CAPE significantly suppressed MDI-induced adipogenesis of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. FACS analysis results showed that CAPE delayed MDI-stimulated cell cycle progression, thereby contributing to inhibit mitotic clonal expansion (MCE), which is a prerequisite step for adipogenesis. Also, CAPE regulated the expression of cyclin D1 and the phosphorylation of ERK and Akt, which are upstream of cyclin D1.         <P>Reflection type subtractive tri-color filters, enabling metal-thickness tolerant high color saturation, were proposed and demonstrated capitalizing on a nanoporous metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) resonant structure, which comprises a cavity made of self-assembled nanoporous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO), sandwiched between an Al film of the same nanoporous configuration and a highly reflective aluminum (Al) substrate. For the proposed filter, the output color was easily determined by controlling the resonance wavelength via the thickness of the porous AAO cavity. In particular, the spectral response was deemed to exhibit a near-zero resonant dip, thereby achieving enhanced color saturation, which was stably maintained irrespective of the thickness of the porous Al film, due to its reduced effective refractive index. In order to manufacture the proposed color filters on a large scale, a porous Al film of hexagonal lattice configuration was integrated with an identically porous self-assembled AAO layer, which has been grown on an Al substrate. For the realized tri-color filters for cyan, magenta, and yellow (CMY), having a 15-nm Al film, near-zero reflection dips were observed to be centered at the wavelengths of 436, 500, and 600 nm, respectively. The resulting enhanced color saturation was stably maintained even though the variations were as large as 10 nm in the metal thickness.</P>

        The impact of pyriproxyfen on the development of honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) colony in field

        Pyriproxyfen (PPN) is an insect growth regulator (IGR) that interferes with insect metamorphosis. Although the side effects of PPN on honey bee larval/adult stages have been studied, the risk to honey bee larvae from PPN residue in the environment is still unclear. In this study, we evaluated the impact of PPN on larval honey bees in field colonies by using an in vivo feeding assay. Oral toxicity to adult honey bees were determined. Finally, influence on royal jelly production was also examined. For in vivo feeding assay, the highest observed PPN treatment caused 67% mortality during pupal stage and in the remaining bees, 62.3% showed abnormal eclosion. Reductions in hatching rate, capping rate and adult emergence rate and increased abnormal eclosion rate were found in the colonies fed with 10 ppm PPN syrup. Oral toxicity test revealed that adult honey bees were less susceptible to PPN. Moreover, PPN reduced not only queen cell acceptance rate but also yield of royal jelly in queen cells. These results indicate that PPN has negative impacts on both larval and adult honey bees and royal jelly production, especially under high PPN concentrations. Since PPN is harmful to the development of honey bee larvae and pupae in the natural environment, the issue of honey bee colony contamination by PPN should be addressed.

        중국 중학생이 지각한 부모 및 교사의 자율성지지, 기본심리욕구, 사회정서역량 간의 관계 연구

        본 연구의 목적은 자기결정성이론에 기반하여 부모 및 교사의 자율성 지지가 기본심리욕구를 매개로 중국 청소년의 사회정서역량에 미치는 영향을 살펴보는 데 있다. 이를 위해 중국 산동성 쯔보시 중학교 3학년 434명의 데이터를 사용하여 부모 및 교사의 자율성 지지와 중학생의 사회정서역량 간의 관계에서 중학생의 기본심리욕구의 매개효과를 확인하였다. 본 연구의 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 부모의 자율성 지지가 교사의 자율성 지지보다 중학생의 기본심리욕구 및 사회정서역량에 더 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 중학생의 기본심리욕구가 충족될수록 중학생의 사회정서역량 수준이 높아지는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 중학생이 지각한 부모 및 교사의 자율성 지지가 많을수록 중학생의 사회정서역량 수준이 높아졌다. 특히 중학생이 지각한 부모의 자율성 지지는 교사의 자율성 지지보다 중학생의 사회정서역량에 더 직접적인 영향을 주었다. 넷째, 부모와 교사의 자율성 지지는 중학생의 기본심리욕구를 충족시켜 사회정서역량에 긍정적 영향을 미쳤다. 이때 역시 부모의 자율성 지지는 교사의 자율성 지지보다 중학생의 기본심리욕구를 더 충족시키고 사회정서역량에 보다 큰 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 연구 결과는 중학생의 사회·정서적 역량을 개발하기 위해 교사뿐만 아니라 부모의 역할이 필수적이고, 특히 중국에서 부모의 사회정서학습에 대한 인식 개선과 부모 교육 확대의 필요를 시사한다. Purpose of this study was intended to examine the effect of parent and teacher's autonomy support on adolescent's social and emotional competencies, focusing on the mediating effect of basic psychological needs based on self-determination theory. Data of 434 students in Zibo city in Shandong Province were used in the analysis of a structural equation modeling. The main results of this study are as follows. First, the more basic psychological needs of middle school students they were met, the higher level of social and emotional competencies of middle school students have. Second, the more parents and teachers' autonomy supported middle school students perceived, the higher level of social and emotional competencies of middle school students they had. In particular, parental autonomy support perceived by students had a more direct impact on the social and emotional competencies. Lastly, parents' autonomy support stimulated middle school students' basic psychological needs more than teachers' autonomy support, and has a greater influence on social and emotional competencies of middle school students. In conclusion, in order to develop the social and emotional competencies of middle school students, the role of parents as well as teachers is essential, suggesting the need to raise awareness of parent education in China and to expand and implement parent education at national level.

        The seasonal detection of AcSBV (Apis cerana sacbrood virus) prevalence in Taiwan

        The epizootic disease caused by Apis cerana sacbrood virus (AcSBV) occurred in Eastern hive bee, A. cerana, since2015 in Taiwan. A large-scale survey of this disease from September and December 2016 in Taiwan was performedincluding symptom check and molecular identification in honey bees of A. cerana hives and several A. mellifera hives, which were co-cultured with A. cerana. Based on the nucleotide sequences of partial VP1, thephylogenetic analysis with those of the known AcSBV isolates revealed that most of AcSBV isolates from Taiwanwere closely relative to SBV-FZ and -JL isolates from China, whereas only one sample (N15-5-1) was in a distinctcluster, which was closely relative to SBV-LN from China too. The AcSBV prevalence was occurring in A. ceranahives in most areas of Taiwan except for those in Hualien and Pingtung Counties in Taiwan. Notably, the AcSBVprevalence rate showed the temporal increase from 47.1% to 69.6% within 4 months. In addition, 37.5% ofAcSBV prevalence rate was found in A. mellifera hives. It showed that A. mellifera was also susceptible to AcSBVinfection. The present results would provide the information on the epidemiology and for prospective research.
