Color Mosaic - color sampling with automatic pixelation versus subjective selection

Color sampling in graphic design is an important skill to enhance the color sense of artwork. For designers, pixelating is a common filter to sample color of an image. However, the automatic approach might not be powerful enough to present key color affectively. This study is conducted to understand how color sampling differs between automatic pixelation and subjective selection. 28 participants conducted color sampling with 2 methods for their selected images and summarized the color changes with L*, C* and h* value in CIELCh color space. Subjective selections save salient colors on chips that are complex in details, especially for portraits, animals and artificial environment. While automatic pixelation performs perfectly on colors on chips that are uniform and simple, especially for scenery, plants and food. Furthermore, compared with automatic pixelation, subjective selection usually uses increased contrast and chroma together with shifted hue for color sampling. This reveals that perceived color sampling pursues a vivid color mosaic with emphasis on concerned area.
Affective Effect of Target Skin Color

Skin color is a crucial feature for portraits. It has been widely used to enhance portrait quality, but the standard or reference for skin color are quite vague. In this paper, we explore the affective effect of target skin color for image quality. Target skin color are obtained from literature review of three aspacts of skin researches, measured real skin color, memory skin color and preferred digital skin color. According to the evaluation results, we could conclude that different target skin color setting could lead to different emotional image qualities.

With the increasing awareness of skin diversity, cosmetic companies have created foundations with more than 40 shade options. Color researchers endeavored to evaluate the color quality of foundation from product R&D. At the same time, cosmetics companies have conducted their own trials to systematically communicate these tiny shade differences to consumers. In this study, we addressed the color communication for liquid foundation. Through 1009 color labels collected from 26 product lines, two features of color, lightness and undertone were used commonly to classify the shade colors. Lightness was labeled using numbers. The smaller the number is, the lighter the color is, which is similar to the ways numbers are used to specify lightness for surface color. Undertone, the color nuance independent of lightness, was labeled symbolically through sets of initials, such as P(pink), B(beige), and Y(yellow) or simply C(cool), N(neutral), and W(warm).Furthermore, clear tendencies were observed regarding color name in terms of lightness. The similarities and differences when compared with other perception-based color systems and skin color were also discussed. We expect cosmetics companies and manufacturers to utilize the findings from this study for product research and launching.
얼굴 피부색에 대한 주관적 판단과 측색치 간 비교 연구

We compared and analyzed the colorimetric quantities and subjective judgment of the skin color of 100 Korean college students focusing on their faces. The result shows a positive correlation between the lightness of the skin (L of CIELab) and the subjectively brightness assessed using a 7-Likert scale. However, the effect size is only medium. Also, the participants showed a tendency toward brighter skin tone and negative attitude to yellow nuances. Interestingly, the relationship between this tendency is not much explainable by the colorimetric quantities. In other words, people desire for the skin color not based on how they look but based on how they perceive themselves. Truly, the difference between the ideal and the present matters for self confidence that finally expects consumer satisfaction with their own skin color. In addition, the color differences among facial parts and hand were statistically significant, indicating errors may occur in the process of acquiring color testing uning one's hand skin. Based on the findings, implications for practical application are suggested.
측색, 주관적 판단, 그리고 추구하는 피부색 간 관계 분석

본 연구에서는 남녀 대학생 100명을 대상으로 설문을 진행하여 측색에 기반한 CIELab 색공간 내에서의 물리량과 비교분석하였다. 특히 자신의 피부색을 어떻게 인지하고 변화하기를 희망하는가에 대하여 탐색하고, 피부색을 판단하는 주요 기준 위치들 간에 색차를 조사하였으며, 현재와 비교하여 어떻게 변화해 가리를 희망하는가에 대해 살펴보았다. 통계 분석 결과 밝기의 경우 측색과 인지량 간에 양의 상관관계가 존재하지만 영향도는 중간 크기에 머물렀다. 얼굴색을 가늠하는 주요 부위별 색과 엄지손가락과 연결된 손등의 색도 통계적으로 유의한 수준에서 색차를 나타내어, 색조 화장품을 선택하는 과정에서 발생할 수 있는 여러 오류를 예측할 수 있었다. 그리고 본인이 희망하는 피부색의 변화 방향은 현재의 모습을 보완하기 위한 방향성이 아니라 이상향에 대한 모습을 지향하는 패턴을 관찰하였다. 실험 결과를 기반으로 장기적 관점에서 소비자의 긍정적 반응을 유도할 수 있는 소통 방식을 도출하기를 기대한다.

在全球能源转型与环境保护的大背景下,新能源专业的人才培养显得尤为重要。工程教育认证视角下新能源专业劳动教育协同育人模式,以储能原理与技术课程为例,提出了一个创新的教学方案。本研究围绕工程教育认证的核心要求,探索了将劳动教育融入专业学习的具体实践路径,旨在提升学生的实践能力、创新能力和社会责任感。通过实验、项目驱动学习、企业实习等方式,强化理论与实践的结合,促进学生能力的全面发展。研究结果表明,该协同育人模式能有效地提升学生的专业技能和工程素养,为新能源领域培养出更具实践经验和创新能力的高质量人才。本研究不仅对新能源专业教育具有重要的指导意义,也为其他工程专业的人才培养提供了可借鉴的经验。 In the context of global energy transformation and environmental protection, talent cultivation in the field of new energy is particularly important. A collaborative education model for labor education in the field of new energy from the perspective of engineering education professional certification, taking the Energy Storage Principles and Technology course as an example, proposes an innovative teaching plan. This study focuses on the core requirements of engineering education professional certification and explores specific practical paths for integrating labor education into professional learning, aiming to enhance students’ practical ability, innovation ability, and social responsibility. By conducting experiments, project-driven learning, and enterprise internships, we aim to strengthen the integration of theory and practice and promote the comprehensive development of student abilities. The research results indicate that this collaborative education model can effectively enhance students' professional skills and engineering literacy and cultivate high-quality talent with more practical experience and innovative abilities in the field of new energy. This study not only has important guiding significance for the education of new energy majors but also provides valuable experience for talent cultivation in other engineering majors.
