A selective and sensitive ‘‘naked-eye’’ rhodamine-based ‘‘turn-on’’ chemosensor for detection of Hg2+ ion over other metal ions such as Ni2+, Ca2+, Ba2+, Cs+, Fe3+, Mn2+, Cd2+, Zn2+, Mg2+, K+, Ag+, Hg2+, Co2+, and Pb2+ in aqueous solution was prepared. Meanwhile, a new method for the synthesis of rhodamine amide directly from rhodamine hydrazide in the presence of NaH was reported for the first time. It was observed that once Hg2+ ion was added to the sensor 4, a 91.4-fold enhancement of the absorption at 570 nm was observed. Its selectivity toward Hg2+ ion was very high, and little interference was detected for other commonly coexistent metal ions. The fluorescent intensity was almost a constant minimal value when pH = 5–8 in aqueous solution. It demonstrated that Hg2+ could be detected at least down to 3 108 M. Moreover, the Hg2+-promoted selective desulfurization reaction was further confirmed by MS spectra. The present probe could be used to determine Hg2+ ion concentrations in aqueous environments.

Bi-functionalized lignin with amino and sulfonic groups (ASL) was synthesized via Mannich reaction andsulfomethylation. It was systematically characterized by FT-IR, element analysis, surface charge and XPS. Effects of initial pH, contact time and initial metal ion concentration on the adsorption of Cu(II) and Pb(II)onto ALS were studied. Results indicated that the biosorbent showed excellent performance for metalseven from low pH solutions. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms could be described well with Pseudosecond-order and D–R model, respectively. Further investigation of the metal-loaded ASL by FT-IR andXPS elucidated the amino and sulfonic groups reacted with metals in different way.
Biological Control of Apple Ring Rot on Fruit by Bacillus amyloliquefaciens 9001

Apple ring rot disease, caused by Botryosphaeria dothidea (Moug. ex. Fr) Ces. et de Not., is one of the most important diseases on apple fruits. In this study, strain 9001 isolated from healthy apple fruits from an infested orchard was evaluated for its biocontrol activity against apple ring rot in vitro and in vivo. Strain 9001 showed obvious antagonistic activity to B. dothidea YL-1 when plated on potato dextrose agar. Soaking healthy apples in the bacterial suspensions of strain 9001 prior to artificial inoculation of fungal pathogen resulted in a dramatic decrease in disease incidence when compared to the control. Moreover, either field application in the growth season or postharvest treatment of apples from infected orchards with bacterial suspensions of strain 9001 resulted in significantly reduced disease incidence within the storage period for 4 months at room temperature. Based on the phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA and the gyrA gene, strain 9001 was identified as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. These results indicated that B. amyloliquefaciens 9001 could be a promising agent in biocontrol of apple ring rot on fruit, which might help to minimize the yield loss of apple fruit during the long postharvest period.

Docosahexaenoic acid-enriched phosphatidylcholine(DHA-PC) is a new generation of omega-3 lipids,which contains an ester bond linking DHA at the sn-2position of phospholipid. DHA-PC has become the interestrecently as its better bioavailability and anti-oxidationcapacity. In this study, the anti-angiogenic effect of DHAPCwas evaluated. The capacities of proliferation, migration,tube formation of human umbilical vein endothelialcells were significantly declined after DHA-PC treatment. Furthermore, DHA-PC inhibited the neovascularization ofthe chick chorioallantoic membrane in vivo. Mechanismresults indicated that DHA-PC enhances the expression ofperoxisome proliferator-activated receptor c (PPARc) attranscriptional and translational level, subsequently downregulatesthe VEGFR2 expression and VEGFR2-mediateddownstream Ras/ERK pathway, resulting in significantreduction in proliferation and differentiation. Additionally,PPARc-specific antagonist GW9662 partly reversed theinhibition effects of DHA-PC on tube formation and neovascularization,suggesting that DHA-PC exerts anti-angiogenesiseffect through activating PPARc. Thesefindings indicated that DHA-PC has a great prospect ofanti-tumor angiogenesis therapy.
Pulsed Electric Current Sintering of Nano-crystalline Iron-base Powders

A new process of pulsed electric current sintering was developed. It combines compaction with activated sintering effectively and can manufacture bulky nano-crystalline materials very quickly. A nano-structured steel is obtained with high relative density and hardness by this process. The average grain size of iron matrix is 58nm and the carbide particulate size is less than 100 nm. The densification temperature of ball-milled powders is approximately lower than that of blended powders. When the sintering temperature increases, the density of as-sintered specimen increases but the hardness of as-sintered specimen first increases and then decreases.

Three refractory castables containing corundum aggregates with different porosities, average pore size and strength and the same matrices were fabricated. The effects of the properties of corundum aggregates on the strength and slag resistance of refractory castables were investigated through an X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mercury porosimetry measurements, etc. It was found that the properties of corundum aggregates have an important effect on the bulk density, porosity, compressive strength and slag resistance of refractory castables, but have little effect on the flexural strength of refractory castables. Compared with a castable containing white fused corundum aggregate (with a porosity of 4.2% and a bulk density of 3.62 g/cm3), the castable containing a porous corundum aggregate (with a porosity of 42.0% and a bulk density of 2.29 g/cm3) has a higher porosity of 35.7%, a lower bulk density of 2.44 g/cm3, a lower but sufficient compressive strength (80.4 MPa) and a lower slag resistance, but has a similar flexural strength (20.3 MPa), and then has a potential application for a non-slag working lining of a ladle to decrease the consumption of energy and Al2O3 material.

Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Epoxy Resins Modified by a Novel Thermoplastic-polyimide

In this paper, a novel polyimide with trifluoromethyl group (PIS) was synthesized successfully and used toimprove the toughness of epoxy resins. Five modified epoxy resins (5, 7.5, 10, 12.5 and 15 wt%) were prepared andinvestigated, respectively. The structure, thermal properties, tensile properties, viscoelastic properties, toughness andmorphology of modified epoxy resins were studied by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetricanalysis (TGA), Instron 5967, Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Theresults showed that the epoxy resins modified with PIS exhibited good thermal stability which the glass transitiontemperatures increased from 135.9 oC to 146.4 oC. Tensile strength of modified epoxy resins increased from 40.4 MPa to92.3 MPa. The KIC values increased from 0.86 MPa·m1/2 to 1.56 MPa·m1/2 indicated that the toughness enhancement wasmarkedly. The fracture modes also were examined by SEM images and exhibited the fracture mode changed from the brittleone to ductile fracture with varied weight of the novel trifluoromethyl-polyimide.
