Two dominant parasitoids, Platygaster matsutama Yoshida and Inostemma seoulis Ko, often coexist in the host-parasitoid community of the pine needle gall midge, Thecodiplosis japonensis Uchida et Inouye. Subtle differences in parasitoid phenology appear to play a key role in reducing interspecific competition, but the specific thermal conditions for development of each species have not been defined. We examined the thermal biology of two sympatric parasitoids during postdiapause development at seven constant temperatures (12, 15,18, 21, 24, 27, and 30 °C) to determine species-specific developmental parameters. The lower developmental threshold was estimated to be 4.2 °C and 8.4 °C, and the thermal constant was 741.2 and 946.1 degree days (DD) for P. matsutama and I. seoulis, respectively, using the linear model. The nonlinear model determined that the optimal temperature was 24.8 and 26.5 °C for P. matsutama and I. seoulis, respectively, but with an upper threshold temperature (30 °C) that was the same for both species. The development rate of P. matsutama was higher than that of I. seoulis over the entire thermal range, and the difference was highest at 21.5 °C. Despite the lower developmental rate, I. seoulis was more heat tolerant and its optimal temperature was closer to that of host insect than those of P. matsutama. The results showed clear differences in thermal biology between P. matsutama and I. seoulis. Potential implications are discussed with respect to coexistence of two parasitoids on a single host and biological control of T. japonensis

The purpose of this study was to analyze the judgments of South Korean college students about inclusion and teaching students with disabilities before and after matriculation in adapted physical activity courses. Participants were undergraduate students at universities in South Korea. The research method was a Pretest-Posttest Nonequivalent Comparison Group Design. Data were collected using a survey scale (Son, Kozub, Noh, & Jun, 2006). There were 471 pretest and 478 posttest surveys returned. At pretest, there were no differences (p > .01) in the attitudes of participants as a function of their gender, direct contact, major or previous experiences. However, group differences were found in posttest scores as a function of academic major and past experiences teaching individuals with disabilities. Favorable shifts in judgments tend to occur when individuals are given credible evidence about and afforded opportunities to teach students with disabilities under favorable conditions (Allport, 1954). The findings and implications are discussed.

<P>Hyperpigmentation disorders such as freckles and senile lentigines in the skin are associated with abnormal accumulation of melanin pigments. In this study, two lignan constituents were isolated from Saururus chinensis Baill (Saururaceae) as inhibitors of cellular melanin production by bioassay-guided fractionations. The active constituents were manassantin A and B that dose-dependently inhibited melanin production in α-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH)-activated melanoma B16 cells with IC50 values of 13 nm and 8 nm, respectively. Arbutin as a positive control exhibited an IC50 value of 96 µm on α-MSH-induced melanin production. Further, manassantin A inhibited forskolin- or 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX)-induced melanin production with IC50 values of 14 nm or 12 nm, respectively. Manassantin A decreased cellular amounts of IBMX-inducible tyrosinase protein but could not affect the catalytic activity of cell-free tyrosinase, a key enzyme in the biosynthetic pathway of melanin pigments. Finally, this study could provide a pharmacological potential of S. chinensis in hyperpigmentation disorders. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.</P>

Stable hydrophobic nanocomposites of magnetic nanoparticles and clay are prepared by the self-assembly of magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles on surfaces of exfoliated clay platelets. Due to the attractive interaction between hydrophobic groups, oleic acid coated nanoparticles are strongly attached to the surface of cetyl trimethylammonium cation coated clay platelets in organic media. Crystal structure and magnetic property of composite particles are examined using electron microscopy, x-ray diffractometer and vibration sample magnetometer. In addition, composite particles are dispersed in mineral oil and rheological properties of composite particle suspensions are characterized using steady-state and oscillatory measurements. Magnetite nanoparticle decorated organoclay forms a tunable network in mineral oil. When a magnetic field is applied, the composite particle fluid exhibits higher storage modulus and maintains a solid-like property at larger strain. Our results show that the viscoelastic property of the magnetite nanoparticle decorated organoclay fluid is controlled by applying external magnetic field.

Quantifying multiple protein biomarkers in a blood sample at one time has many advantages for diagnosing human diseases. In this study, 34 multiplex assays by multiple reaction monitoring-mass spectrometry (MRM-MS) for serum biomarkers were characterized according to Clinical Proteomic Tumor Analysis Consortium (CPTAC) guidelines. The assays revealed that the median lower limit of quantitation (LLOQ) was 0.37 fmol/μL (16.0 ng/mL) and that the median total coefficient of variation (CV) was 18.2%, 12.2%, and 10.6% in the low-, medium-, and high-quality control (QC) samples. With regard to selectivity, the median mean differences in slope and concentration were 2.1% and 4.3%, respectively. The median values for all CVs and %difference from the nominal concentration for stability were 9.5% and 2.7% in low-QC and 3.8% and 3.1% in medium-QC. The median total CV was 9.8% in the reproducibility. Finally, 17 protein-based biomarker assays were reliable and transferrable for preclinical purposes per CPTAC guidelines.
