        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>This study aims to evaluate inter‐annual and inter‐plot variation of wood biomass production (WBP) and to investigate the relationships of the WBP variations with several biotic and abiotic characteristics at a deciduous forest in complex terrain, the Gwangneung Experimental Forest, Korea. Based on field survey in the plot‐scale study area, WBP during 1991–2004 was estimated by a dendrochronological method. Our field data indicated that the inter‐annual variation of WBP was closely related to the seasonal climate of both winter air temperature and spring precipitation. The inter‐plot variation of WBP was highly associated with basal area, biomass, and frequency of <I>Quercus</I> spp. in the plots, and correlations of the inter‐plot variation with the stand characteristics of the specific species were stronger than those with slope and soil water content. Our results suggest that the annual fluctuation of forest productivity is primarily governed by severe climate in a season of the year, and the spatial distribution of a dominant species largely represent plot variation in the productivity. Our findings contribute to an enhanced understanding of climatic effects on the annual variability of forest productivity and the spatial heterogeneity of the productivity, which are extensively concerned with forested ecosystems of Korea.</P>

      • A case of congenital melanocytic nevus with halo phenomenon accompanied by vitiligo

        Halo nevus is a round to oval shaped hypopigmented patch around a pigmented nevus. Only 4.7% of halo nevus is being reported around congenital nevus and much rarer with vitiligo. The pathogenesis of congenital halo nevus and vitiligo is still unclear, but considering that the CD 8 positive T lymphocyte infiltrate around the melanocyte and autoantibody to melanocyte is found in both diseases, same autoimmune process may participate in both diseases.A 6-year-old boy presented with whitish depigmentation around a brownish pigmented patch on right neck. The brownish pigmented patch appeared since birth and the depigmented lesion appreared 3 years ago. Since then hypopigmented patches were occurred at both periocular area and knee area. Koebner phenomenon was also observed. Histologically, nevus cells and inflammatory cell infiltration was observed at the brownish pigmented area. On the other hand, at depigmented area, there was significant decrease in melanocyte melanin in epidermis and dermis. The patient was diagnosed with congenitaal melanocytic nevus with halo phenomenon accompanied by vitiligo and excision was planned but the patient was transferred to other dermatologic clinic. Herein, we describe a 6-year-old boy with congenital melanocytic nevus with halo phenomenon accompanied by vitiligo.

      • Light Sensing in a Photoresponsive, Organic-Based Complementary Inverter

        <P>A photoresponsive organic complementary inverter was fabricated and its light sensing characteristics was studied. An organic circuit was fabricated by integrating <I>p</I>-channel pentacene and <I>n</I>-channel copper hexadecafluorophthalocyanine (F16CuPc) organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) with a polymeric gate dielectric. The F16CuPc OTFT showed typical <I>n</I>-type characteristics and a strong photoresponse under illumination. Whereas under illumination, the pentacene OTFT showed a relatively weak photoresponse with typical p-type characteristics. The characteristics of the organic electro-optical circuit could be controlled by the incident light intensity, a gate bias, or both. The logic threshold (<I>V</I><SUB>M</SUB>, when <I>V</I><SUB>IN</SUB> = <I>V</I><SUB>OUT</SUB>) was reduced from 28.6 V without illumination to 19.9 V at 6.94 mW/cm<SUP>2</SUP>. By using solely optical or a combination of optical and electrical pulse signals, light sensing was demonstrated in this type of organic circuit, suggesting that the circuit can be potentially used in various optoelectronic applications, including optical sensors, photodetectors and electro-optical transceivers.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/aamick/2011/aamick.2011.3.issue-5/am101284m/production/images/medium/am-2010-01284m_0005.gif'></P>

      • P288 : Distribution of soil keratinophilic fungi isolated in summer beaches of the south coast in Korea

        Purpose: Soil keratinophilic fungi are often pathogenic and can harm human. In summer beaches, people are frequently and directly in tough with soil. There are not many studies on the on pathogenic keratinophilic fungi in summer beaches. Objectives: We sought to define the distribution of soil keratinophilic fungi in summer beaches of the south sea in Korea. Methods: Soil samples were collected at 180 sites of 6 different beaches. The beaches are randomly selected regarding the distance. Fungi were isolated by hair baiting technique. Results: 29 strains (16.1%) of keratinophilic fungi were isolated from 180 samples. The most frequent isolated fungus was Microsporum gypseum (72.4%) and followed by Trichophyton ajelloi (13.8%), Microsporum cookei (10.3%), and Chrysosporium (3.4%). The frequency of isolation was highest in shaded dry area (30%). Conclusion: The distribution and species of keratinophilic fungi in south coast of Korea showed different result with previous studies. People should be aware of the pathogenic fungi in summer beaches and prevent the possible superficial fungal infections.

        Effect of Supply and Return Locations of a Floor - Supply Cooling System on Thermal Comfort

        This study numerically investigates thermal comfort of a space cooled by a floor-supply air-conditioning system, in which three different combinations of supply and return locations, one floor-supply/ceiling-return and two floor-supply/floor-return, are treated. A complementary experiment is performed to validate the present numerical analysis, and the prediction agrees favorably with the measured data. In the numerical procedure, a simplified model mimicking the inlet flow through a diffuser is developed for efficient simulations. The calculated results show that the ceiling-return type is far better in terms of thermal comfort than the floor-return ones within the extent of this study, which seems to be caused by effective vertical penetration of the supply air against natural convection. It is also revealed that the arrangement of port locations in the floor-supply/floor-return system has insignificant effect on the cooling performance. For selecting a proper system, other characteristics including the heating performance should be accounted for simultaneously with the present considerations.

        Development of a hybrid regionalization model for estimation of hydrological model parameters for ungauged watersheds

        수문모형의 매개변수 추정에 필요한 유량 관측 자료의 수집은 시·공간적으로 제한이 있어 우리나라도 아직 상당수의 미계측유역이 존재하며, 이를 보완하고자 주변 유역의 정보를 활용하는 지역화 방법들이 연구되어 왔다. 그러나 지역적 특성이나 기후 조건에 따라 지역화 방법의 결과가 상이하여 어느 지역에 어떠한 지역화 방법이 가장 우수하다고 판단하기 어렵다. 본 연구에서는 보편적으로 사용되는 지역화 방법인 지역회귀모형의 설명 변수에 공간근접모형으로 추정한 수문모형의 매개변수를 추가하여 회귀모형의 적합성을 향상시켰으며, 이를 하이브리드 지역화모형이라 정의하고 기존 방법들과 비교하였다. 계측유역으로는 관측 자료가 충분한 남한의 37개 유역을 선정하였고, 수문모형은 개념적 수문모형인 GR4J를 사용하였으며, 계측유역에 대한 수문모형의 매개변수 산정은 Shuffled complex evolution 알고리즘을 사용하였다. 유역 특성변수들 간 다중공선성을 고려하기 위해 Variation inflation factor를 사용하였고, Stepwise regression을 통해 회귀모형의 최적 설명변수를 선택하였다. 통계 값을 통해 모형의 적합성을 비교한 결과, 하이브리드 지역화모형에서 가장 작은 RMSE 값을 나타내었으며, 유역별 모의 값의 변동성이 줄어들어 결과의 불확실성 또한 낮아짐을 확인할 수 있었다. 따라서 하이브리드 모형이 미계측유역의 유출량 산정을 위한 하나의 대안이 될 수 있음을 확인하였다. There remain numerous ungauged watersheds in Korea owing to limited spatial and temporal streamflow data with which to estimate hydrological model parameters. To deal with this problem, various regionalization approaches have been proposed over the last several decades. However, the results of the regionalization models differ according to climatic conditions and regional physical characteristics, and the results of the regionalization models in previous studies are generally inconclusive. Thus, to improve the performance of the regionalization methods, this study attaches hydrological model parameters obtained using a spatial proximity model to the explanatory variables of a regional regression model and defines it as a hybrid regionalization model (hybrid model). The performance results of the hybrid model are compared with those of existing methods for 37 test watersheds in South Korea. The GR4J model parameters in the gauged watersheds are estimated using a shuffled complex evolution algorithm. The variation inflation factor is used to consider the multicollinearity of watershed characteristics, and then stepwise regression is performed to select the optimum explanatory variables for the regression model. Analysis of the results reveals that the highest modeling accuracy is achieved using the hybrid model on RMSE overall the test watersheds. Consequently, it can be concluded that the hybrid model can be used as an alternative approach for modeling ungauged watersheds.

      • Experimental study for the development of inline phosphate coating process technology

        Inline phosphate film treatment technology was applied to improve the process of processing steel wires or steel rods applied to the manufacture of various bolts and power transmission axes. A comparative review of film formation by processing time based on polymer lubricants for non-reactive metal forming process, non-reactive non-phosphorus lubricated coating agent, and computational diagram. The development technology was not less effective than the previous nine processes by simplifying it with only two processes, reducing processing time, reducing facility installation area, preventing water pollution by wastewater, and using ozone layer destructive materials. In addition, productivity was improved due to easy quality control, simplified process management, price competitiveness, shorter delivery times, and improved working environment.
