This study aimed to determine and observe the topic-specific pedagogical content knowledge of university mathematics teachers before and during limit and continuity concept instruction, and compare the teachers’ perceptions of their teaching to what happened in their classrooms using the case study method. The study involved five university mathematics teachers who teach ‘Applied Mathematics I’ to pre-engineering students at Assosa University, Ethiopia. Classroom observation sessions and pre-lesson teacher interviews were used as data sources. The data were analyzed by identifying common themes in each of the knowledge components prior to and during the lesson, and then by comparing the two phases. The findings from the teacher cases provided detailed contextual information and revealed knowledge manifestations in their lesson design and actual teaching processes. The study’s findings revealed that teachers had a good understanding of topic-specific pedagogical content knowledge components prior to the lesson, but did not demonstrate most of these in their actual teaching of limit and continuity; their reported and enacted knowledge differed. According to this study, individual teachers varied in their implementation of what they had mentioned about various components of topic-specific pedagogical content knowledge. The study proposes that understanding teachers’ knowledge during the lesson design phase and actual teaching could help fill the gap as a means of professional development, and thereby, improve pre-engineering students’ mathematics learning.

Background: To determine the histopathological pattern of colorectal cancer (CRC) among Saudi patients with a view to determine various epidemiological and histopathological features of the disease. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively collected and analyzed the demographic and histopathological data of all the patients with CRC diagnosed at King Fahad Hospital, Madinah, Saudi Arabia over a period of 8 years from January 2006 to December 2013. Results: Of 324 cases of CRC reviewed, 200 cases (61.7%) were males while 124 cases (38.3%) were females giving a male to female ratio of 1.6: 1. Age of the patients ranged from 20 to 100 years with a mean age 57.9 years. The rectosigmoid region was the most frequent anatomical site (13.6%) involved and adenocarcinoma (88.6%) was the most common histopathological type. The majority of adenocarcinomas (87.3%) were moderately differentiated. A total of 47.8% of patients were in stage B and 43.5% of patients were in stage C of the Aster-Coller classification. Most patients (75.7%) presented with large size tumors. Lymphovascular invasion and lymph node metastasis were recorded in 67.9% and 43.6% of cases, respectively. Conclusions: Colorectal cancer is common in our environment and the majority of patients present late with an advanced stage. Screening programs regarding CRC should be enhanced to improve the outcome of the patients.

Aim: To evaluate the predominant colorectal polyps in the Almadinah region of Saudi Arabia. Materials and Methods: In this iretrospective study, we analyzed pathology reports of colonoscopies performed in King Fahad Hospital, Madinah, Saudi Arabia during the period 2006 to 2013. Data based on patient age, gender, size, site and type of polyps and the degree of dysplasia were analyzed by software SPSS 17 and compared with other published studies from different geographic regions of the world. Results: During these years, 224 patients had colonic polyps, of whom 149 (66.5%) were men and 75 (33.5%) were women. The most common types of polyps were adenomatous (166), followed by hyperplastic polyps (24), juvenile (18), inflammatory (13), lipomatous (2) and one patient with Peutz-Jegher polyps. Tubulovillous adenoma was the commonest adenomatous polyp (102), followed by tubular (41) and villous (23) types. The sigmoid colon was the most commonly involved region (36.6%). Dysplasia was significantly associated with female patients who had large size tubulovillous polyps located in the left colon. Conclusions: The type and distribution of colorectal polyps in Saudi Arabia is very similar to Western countries. Patient gender, and size, histological type and location of polyps are closely related to dysplastic change in colonic polyps.

Benign biliary strictures are uncommon in children. Classically, these cases are managed surgically, however less invasive approaches with interventional radiology and or endoscopy may have similar results and improved safety profiles While benign biliary strictures have been described in literature on several occasions in young children, (most older than 1 year and once in an infant 3 months of age), all reported cases were managed surgically. We present two cases of benign biliary strictures in infants less than 6 months of age that were managed successfully with novel non-invasive procedures and a review of all current pediatric cases reported in the literature. Furthermore, we describe the use of a Rendezvous procedure, which has not been reported as a treatment approach for benign biliary strictures.
Optimization of shear connectors with high strength nano concrete using soft computing techniques
Sedghi, Yadollah,Zandi, Yosef,Paknahad, Masoud,Assilzadeh, Hamid,Khadimallah, Mohamed Amine Techno-Press 2021 Advances in nano research Vol.11 No.6
This paper conducted mainly for forecasting the behavior of the shear connectors in steel-concrete composite beams based on the different factors. The main goal was to analyze the influence of variable parameters on the shear strength of C-shaped and L-shaped angle shear connectors. The method of ANFIS (adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system) was applied to the data in order to select the most influential factors for the mentioned shear strength forecasting. Five inputs are considered: height, length, thickness of shear connectors together with concrete strength and respective slip of the shear connectors after testing. The ANFIS process for variable selection was also implemented in order to detect the predominant factors affecting the forecasting of the shear strength of C-shaped and L-shaped angle shear connectors. The results show that the forecasting methodology developed in this research is useful for enhancing the multiple performances characterizing in the shear strength prediction of C and L shaped angle shear connectors analyzing.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>In this study, the effect of washing TiO2produced from flocculated sludge was investigated. Produced TiO2was washed with HCl, NaOH and Milli-Q-water and the washed TiO2was then characterized in terms of X-ray diffraction imaging, scanning electron microscope/energy dispersive using X-ray analysis and surface area. Washed TiO2was tested for adsorption and photocatalytic oxidation of acetaldehyde, and the decomposition of organics from synthetic wastewater (SWW) in terms of total organic carbon (TOC) and absorbance at UV-254. Results revealed that the anatase structure was dominant and TiO2was mainly doped with C atoms. The surface area of TiO2generated form TiCl4flocculation was found to be twice larger than the TiO2generated from Ti(SO4)2flocculation. Acid and base washings of TiO2improved its photocatalytic ability in decomposing acetaldehyde under UV-irradiation. Similarly, acid, base and Milli-Q water washings of TiO2were better in reducing TOC and humic acids from SWW.</P>

<P>We report on the highly stable lithium metal|LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 (NCM 622) cells with practical electrodes’ loading of 3.3 mA h g-1, which can undergo many hundreds of stable cycles, demonstrating high rate capability. A key issue was the use of fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC)-based electrolyte solutions (1 M LiPF6 in FEC/dimethyl carbonate). Li|NCM 622 cells can be cycled at 1.5 mA cm-2 for more than 600 cycles, whereas symmetric Li|Li cells demonstrate stable performance for more than 1000 cycles even at higher areal capacity and current density. We attribute the excellent performance of both Li|NCM and Li|Li cells to the formation of a stable and efficient solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the surface of the Li metal electrodes cycled in FEC-based electrolyte solutions. The composition of the SEI on the Li and the NCM electrodes is analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. A drastic capacity fading of Li|NCM cells is observed, followed by spontaneous capacity recovery during prolonged cycling. This phenomenon depends on the current density and the amount of the electrolyte solution and relates to kinetic limitations because of SEI formation on the Li anodes in the FEC-based electrolyte solution.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>
