Purpose: To evaluate the effect of transposition procedures on the vertical rectus muscle (VRM) in the patients who underwent a medial rectus muscle (MR) transection after endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). Methods: In 4 patients with exotropia (XT) and a lack of adduction after ESS, orbital CT or MRI revealed a complete transection of the midportion of the MR. Full-tendon VRM transposition was performed within 3 months after injury (early surgery) in 2 patients with 40△ XT. Two patients with 70△ and 85△ XT underwent an X-type augmented Hummelsheim procedure, which involved pulling each half-tendon and crossing it through the undersurface of the severed MR to the other end of the MR insertion, concurrently with an ipsilateral lateral rectus (LR) recession 11 months and 36 months after ESS, respectively. The adduction deficits were divided into -1 through to -8. The patients were followed up for more than than 1.5 years. Results: Postoperatively, 3 patients showed orthophoria and no diplopia in the primary position. The adduction deficits improved to -3.5 or -4. One patient who underwent an X-type augmented Hummelsheim procedure showed a residual XT of 25△. Conclusions: VRM transposition is effective in correcting a large XT secondary to a MR transection after ESS. When a longstanding large-angle XT with severe contracture of the ipsilateral LR and massive scarring of the adjacent tissues is present, the X-type augmented Hummelsheim procedure coupled with an ipsilateral LR recession had an augmenting effect.

The effects of heavy metals on fermentative hydrogen production were examined based on metal type and concentration. Hydrogen production was stimulated by low concentrations of Cd and Zn but decreased at concentrations of 40 and 1 mg/L, respectively. Hydrogen production was inhibited for the entire range of Cu tested. The order of toxic density was Cu > Zn > Cd at concentrations below 2 mg/L but was Zn > Cu > Cd at higher concentrations. The depression rates of hydrogen production were calculated to be 225.8 mL-H2/mg-Zn, 67.37 mL-H2/mg-Cu, and 13.39 mL-H2/mg-Cd. The presence of heavy metals caused a shift in microbial community. The presence of Clostridium genus bacteria,identified as Clostridium magum, Clostridium diolis, and Clostridium sp., resulted in active hydrogen production. Klebsiella genus bacteria were the most abundant of the class Gammaproteobacteria and also stimulated hydrogen production at relatively low concentrations of heavy metal. When Rhodocista pekingensis, Erwinia chrysanthemi strain 1015-1, Delftia sp. YF 31, or uncultured Klebsiella sp. clone F1apr.32 were present, hydrogen production was seriously decreased.

색채에서 느끼는 온도감은 고바야시 이미지 스케일에서 하나의 축으로 사용되며 색 감성 평가에서 주요한 요인 중 하나로 사용된다. 본 연구에서는 색의 온도감 평가 방법을 다르게 하여 온도감 평가에 영향을 미치는 요인을 알아보고자 하였다. ‘차가운 색’인지 ‘따뜻한 색’인지를 고르게 하는 방법과 비교를 통해 선택하게 하는 방법 그리고 7점 척도로 평가하는 방법으로 실험하였다. 단색의 샘플을 평가하게 하였을 때 온도감의 평가는 색 샘플을 그 자체로 평가한다기보다 학습되었거나 선험적 경험 만들어진 warm과 cool의 카테고리화에 의해 색상명에 따라 판단하는 것처럼 보였다. 선행연구에서 온도감 판단에 색상과 채도가 가장 크게 작용한다고 하였는데 결과적으로 같은 결과가 나오긴 하였으나 두 가지를 같이 놓고 비교하게 했을 때 색상이 선택이 색상환 안에서 순차적으로 이루어지는 것을 볼 수 있었다.
