While family violence researchers have posited wife abuse become social problem in Korea, husband abuse has not become a research theme but also the relationship between wife abuse and husband abuse. This study has purpose to investigate the aspects of wife and husband abuse and to explore the family background variables related to wife and husband abuse. More than half responded their being experenced wife abuse and one third responed being husband abuse. Through the discriminant analysis, 4 variables(wife's occupation, family income, wife's and husband's educational level) in wife abuse and 1 variable(income) in husband abuse and discriminated. This results indicate that it is socioeconomic condition that keeps husband and wife being in abusive marriages.

This study attempts to investigate the characteristics of language and concept development by analyzing language data of a 3 year-old boy during sixteen months, and to certify not only the universality hypothesis of cognitive strategies in mapping semantic and conceptual notion to linguistic markers, but also the speciality of acquiring Korean. The results are devided tn two part; learning & extending grtammatical markers/forming & producing conceptual markers. The first, analysis of grammatical markers, leads to several findings. ① It is found that the child has produced 23 case particles appropriately according to its own function respectively. And this result of the contrastive analysis of case particles in our data supports Slobin (1973)'s universal hypothesis 3 that children prefer a one to one mapping of form and meaning. ② This child produced passive and causal sentences using passive or causal particles variously, and a few error-sentences which he had been confused their functinal connotation. ③ The analysis of error-sentences indicates that the child used a grammatical rule generally over the all cases without consideration of its fitness. This result reflect the basic operating stage-hypothesis proposed by Slobin(1973, p.108); stage of (3) overgeneration of marking. The second, analysis of conceptual terms, leads to following findings. ① This child have concept of possession through the linguistic rules such methods as two subjects in a sentence, word-order, and use of possessive particle. ② The child produced various constrative & adjective terms, that described spatial and time concepts. It is discussed that the acquisition-order of spatial and time concepts as H. Clark had proposed time concept, hmetaphor of spacial concept.' It is partially consistent with his hypothesis in this data. ③ The analysis of error-sentences indicates that the child used a conceptual marker generally over the all cases keeping to perceptual consistency. Theis result reflect the basic operating principle C, "Avoid exceptions" proposed by Slobin (1973). So, this study has revealed that language acquisition is a universal cognition-task cross-linguistically.

Acculturation conditions were hypothesized to be similar between North Korean defectors and East Germans after the unification. Analysis of the interview data with 19 North Korean defectors and 13 East Germans revealed that the conditions and processes of acculturation were similar between North Korean defectors and East Germans in the following domains : Culture shock and cognitive dissonance of North Korean defectors and East Germans after the unification, insecurity of life due to unemployment, settlement and stability of family life, self-identity, and cultural integration. Implications of these findings are discussed in light of the integration of North Korean defectors in South Korea.

The purpose of this study was to investigate child care activities in day care centers and to evaluate the conditions in order to clarify the phases of our child care activities and to present future directions for desirable child care. The subjects of investigation were 110 day care centers in Seoul authorized by the city administrators until July, 1990. Child care activities were evaluated focusing on the whole development of the child based on developmental, open, interactional and ecological approach that are emphasized in quality child care. By evaluating the actual conditions of child care activities, it was found that child care activities could not be provided at the high quality program because of limitations of personal and physical resources.

The purpose of this study was to investigate children`s abilities of self-control and visual information processing based on their experience with video games. Participants, divided by prior exposure to video games, were 44 seven-year-old and 48 eleven-year-old boys. The impulsive tendency of children was measured through the MFFT and The delayed satisfaction test. Visual information processing ability was assessed through perceptual speed, mental rotation, and spatial visualization tasks. No differences were found between more-and less-video-game-experienced boys. Significant differences, however, were found in visual information processing abilities. More experienced boys performed better in mental rotation and spatial visualization tasks than less experienced boys.

This paper reviewed the problems of the occupational duties and difficulties of personnels, especially the directors and teachers of day-care centers. Although the directors of the institutions are required to have high professional quality to take many responsibilities, actually not all directors are qualified for their roles. Also the teachers need high level of ability and proficiency, considering their strong influence on the development of children. And yet, because of their present low position, heavy works and low income, it is difficult to hold qualified teachers in their present position. To solve these problems, a new alternative system is suggested for extra homeroom teachers, the sufficient leasure time, proper income and promotion.

To reveal when toddlers and children acquire the grammatical morpheme of Korean language, this study investigated the way they respond to some picture tasks. The object of this research was 174 children ranging from 18 months to 60 months, who were selected from two child-care centers located in Seoul and Gyeongi Province. Following the statistical analysis of the data, this study ascertained that 2-, and 3- year-old children acquire the most part of grammatical morphemes such as nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, and interrogation terms. The fact that the process of acquisition was significantly different among six age groups has proved the hypothesis of the gradual acquisition of grammatical morpheme.
한국과 미국 유아의 의사소통에서 주제 수행에 대한 비교문화 연구

This study investigated differences in the topic performance of 3-year-old Korean and American children. Sixteen mother and child dyads (8 Americans and 8 Koreans) were tape-recorded during naturally occurring conversations. The cape-recorded data were transcribed on the observational chechlist by Kertoy Vetter(1995). Korean children engaged in topic performance nearly twice as often as American children. Korean children engaged in topic termination/initiation and continuation more often than American children. Also, Korean children engaged in topic collaboration and incorporation more often than American children, but there was no difference in off-topic.
