Radiation therapy is an important treatment for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). However, how to promote radiation sensitivity in HNSCC remains a challenge. This study aimed to investigate the radiosensitizing effects of fenofibrate on HNSCC and explore the underlying mechanisms. HNSCC cell lines CNE-2 and KB were subjected to ionizing radiation (IR), in the presence or absence of fenofibrate treatment. Cell growth and survival, apoptosis and cell cycle were evaluated. In addition, CNE-2 cells were xenografted into nude mice and subjected to IR and/or fenofibrate treatment. The expression of cyclinB and CDK1 was detected by Western blotting. Our results showed that fenofibrate efficiently radiosensitized HNSCC cells and xenografts in mice, and induced apoptosis and G2/M arrest via reducing the activity of the CDK1/cyclinB1 kinase complex. These data suggest that fenofibrate could be a promising radiosensitizer for HNSCC radiotherapy.

The Advanced Driving Assistance System has been widely applied on various kinds of vehicles, since it can provide timely protection and burden relief to the passengers and drivers. Multiple different sensors are adopted to realize specific functions, while millimeter-wave radar and vision sensor are one of the most common sensor combinations. The scheme of sensor data fusion for this combination becomes necessary to contribute with more accurate and complementary detection results. A data fusion model designed for the pair of radar and vision is proposed with a three-level hierarchical structure, which includes screening of original sensor data, sensor data correlation, and target track forecast. The concrete fusion scheme applied on each layer is presented in details. The results of simulation and real circumstances test validate and prove the presented sensor data fusion model is efficient.

In recent years, a temperature-sensitive hydrogel was reported as a promising draw agent in forward osmosis (FO) technology. PEG, acts as porogen, as an enabler to improve the swelling property of hydrogels. From FO test, the addition of porogen to the hydrogel can improve the water flux of FO by increasing the swelling properties of the hydrogel. And the hydrogel modified with porogen improves the concentration efficiency of wastewater from 1.09 to 1.124 times, indicating that the modification of the hydrogel by the porogen has positive significance for FO technology. In this study, an advanced hydrogel was synthesized via physical copolymerization by using N-isopropylacrylamide and sodium acrylate. The internal structure was investigated by SEM test where it was found that that porogens have different mechanisms of action on hydrogel performance: Porogen affects the swelling property of hydrogel by changing the internal network structure through physical “occupation”. The effect of porogen concentration is to act on the porosity of hydrogel, while the main effect of the molecular weight of porogen on the hydrogel structure is by altering the pore size.

Two 3D isomorphous and isostructural complexes, namely, $[Zn(BDOA)(bpy)(H_2O)_2]_n$ (1) and $[Cd(BDOA)-(bpy)(H_2O)_2]_n$ (2); (BDOA = Benzene-1,4-dioxyacetic acid, bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine) were synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and characterized by means of elemental analyses, thermogravimetric (TG), infrared spectrometry, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Complexes 1 and 2 crystallize in the triclinic system, space group P-1 and each metal ion in the complexes are six-coordinated with the same coordination environment. In the as-synthesized complexes, $BDOA^{2-}$ anions link central metal ions to form a 1D zigzag chain $[-BDOA^{2-}-Zn(Cd)-BDOA^{2-}-Zn(Cd)-]_{\infty}$, whereas bpy pillars connect metal ions to generate a 1D linear chain $[-bpy-Zn(Cd)-bpy-Zn(Cd)-]_{\infty}$. Both infinite chains are interweaved into 2D grid-like layers which are further constructed into a 3D open framework, where hydrogen bonds play as the bridges between the adjacent 2D layers. Luminescent properties of complex 1 showed selectivity for $Hg^{2+}$ ion.

Necroptosis is the major cause of death in alveolar epithelial cells (AECs) during acute lung injury (ALI). Here, we report a previously unrecognized mechanism for necroptosis. We found an accumulation of mitochondrial citrate (citratemt) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated AECs because of the downregulation of Idh3α and citrate carrier (CIC, also known as Slc25a1). shRNA- or inhibitor–mediated inhibition of Idh3α and Slc25a1 induced citratemt accumulation and necroptosis in vitro. Mice with AEC-specific Idh3α and Slc25a1 deficiency exhibited exacerbated lung injury and AEC necroptosis. Interestingly, the overexpression of Idh3α and Slc25a1 decreased citratemt levels and rescued AECs from necroptosis. Mechanistically, citratemt accumulation induced mitochondrial fission and excessive mitophagy in AECs. Furthermore, citratemt directly interacted with FUN14 domain-containing protein 1 (FUNDC1) and promoted the interaction of FUNDC1 with dynamin-related protein 1 (DRP1), leading to excessive mitophagy-mediated necroptosis and thereby initiating and promoting ALI. Importantly, necroptosis induced by citratemt accumulation was inhibited in FUNDC1-knockout AECs. We show that citratemt accumulation is a novel target for protection against ALI involving necroptosis.

Background: Sister chromatid exchange (SCE) in human peripheral blood lymphocytes is one of the most extensively studied biomarkers employed to evaluate genetic damage subsequent to pesticide exposure. Objective: To estimate the pooled levels of SCE in human peripheral blood lymphocytes among population exposed to pesticide. Materials and Methods: Meta-analysis on the association between SCE frequency and pesticide exposure was performed with STATA 10.0 software package and Review Manager 5.0.24 in this study. Results: The overall means of SCE were 7.88 [95% confidence intervals (95%CI): 6.71-9.04] for exposure group and 6.05 (95%CI: 5.13-6.95) for controls, respectively. There was statistically significant difference in the SCE frequency in human peripheral blood lymphocytes between pesticide-exposed groups and control groups, and the summary estimate of weighted mean difference was 1.69 (95%CI: 1.01-2.38). We also observed that pesticide-exposed population had significantly higher SCE frequency than control groups among smokers, nonsmokers, pesticide applicator, pesticide producer, other exposure population and Asian population in stratified analyses. Conclusions: Data indicate that the SCE frequency in human peripheral blood lymphocytes might be an indicator of early genetic esffects for pesticide-exposed populations.

Background Natural chemical SAM (S-adenosylmethionine) is present in all living cells and plays an important role in biological transmethylation. Recent studies have shown that SAM possesses many pharmacological activities including anti-cancer effects. However, the complex formation of SAM with gemcitabine on pancreatic carcinoma cells, as well as the specific mechanism, remains unknown. Objectives Pancreatic cancer cells (PANC-1 and BxPC-3) were treated with SAM and/or gemcitabine and subjected to MTT, combination index, cell apoptosis, cell migration, western blot, and xenograft tumorigenicity assays in this research. Results The findings revealed that SAM might synergistically improve gemcitabine’s capacity to prevent the development and proliferation of pancreatic cancer cells. By decreasing the EGFR/AKT pathways, SAM in combination with gemcitabine might promote cell death and impede cell migration. Furthermore, pretreatment with IGF-1 (a particular AKT activator) drastically reduced SAM’s pro-apoptotic activity in pancreatic cancer cells, demonstrating the importance of AKT in this mechanism. Furthermore, following treatment with SAM with gemcitabine, tumor volume and weight were considerably decreased in the PANC-1 xenograft mouse model, and immunohistochemical analysis confi rmed the down-regulation of p-EGFR and p-AKT in tumor tissues. Conclusion By suppressing the EGFR/AKT pathways, SAM could synergistically boost the inhibitory impact of gemcitabine on pancreatic cancer cells and might be a promising therapeutic drug for the management of pancreatic cancer.
