Reducing hydroelastic response of very large floating structures by altering their plan shapes

Presented herein is a study on reducing the hydroelastic response of very large floating structures (VLFS) by altering their plan shapes. Two different categories of VLFS geometries are considered. The first category comprises longish VLFSs with different fore/aft end shapes but keeping their aspect ratios constant. The second category comprises various polygonal VLFS plan shapes that are confined within a square boundary or a circle. For the hydroelastic analysis, the water is modeled as an ideal fluid and its motion is assumed to be irrotational so that a velocity potential exists. The VLFS is modeled as a plate by adopting the Mindlin plate theory. The VLFS is assumed to be placed in a channel or river so that only the head sea condition is considered. The results show that the hydroleastic response of the VLFS could be significantly reduced by altering its plan shape.

The driver fatality ratio (DFR) proposed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) demonstrates the relativefatality risks of occupants in various vehicle-to-vehicle (VtV) crashes. The readily available DFR is based on statistical crash data; hence,estimating the DFR of occupants for newer fleet of vehicles can be quite difficult. Three systematic methods such as the intrusion, decelerationand stiffness ratios of two colliding vehicles in side-impact accidents are proposed to estimate the DFR. A fleet of light trucks andvans (LTVs) striking a sedan car is reconstructed using the non-linear explicit code, LS-DYNA. The simulation results have shown thatthe intrusion and acceleration ratios-based approaches are in good agreement with the statistical DFR, whereas the DFR estimated usingthe stiffness-ratio based approach yielded poor agreement. The intrusion and acceleration ratios-based approaches are then utilized toformulate a combined DFR estimation model. In the second part of the study, the proposed methodology is carried further to estimate theDFR of occupants for a fleet of LTVs impacting a newer passenger car. The proposed methodology can be a viable tool for estimatingthe DFR for newer road vehicles and to improve its crash compatibility with collision partners.

This study aimed to examine the distribution of lower limb atherosclerotic lesions in a multi-ethnic Asian cohort with chronic limb threatening ischemia (CLTI) from Singapore. The Society for Vascular Surgery Vascular Quality Initiative registry database was used to identify 265 CLTI patients who underwent percutaneous angioplasty between June 2019 and December 2019, of whom 171 (64.5%) were male, and the mean age was 67.9±11.0 years. The majority were diabetic (84.5%) and 145 (54.7%) had chronic kidney disease (CKD). The majority of the lower limb atherosclerotic lesions were de novo lesions (598/797, 75.0%), predominantly TransAtlantic Inter-Society Consensus II C/D (451/797, 56.6%), and were moderately to severely calcified (76.3%). The anterior tibial artery and femoral-popliteal artery were the most commonly affected vessels. The mean length of the treated lesions was 14.5±13.7 cm. There was a tendency, albeit insignificant, of multi-level disease in those who were diabetic or had CKD.

The effects of lattice-mismatched strain on the optical properties of type-I core/shell quantum dot nanostructures are investigated theoretically using the simple continuum elasticity and the effective mass quantum mechanics models. The misfit strains are calculated based on the spherically anisotropic linear elasticity solution for a misfitted inclusion embedded in a finite matrix. The effective mass quantum mechanics model for the case of a CdSe/CdS core/shell quantum dot (QD) shows that the subband energy is blue shifted by the compressive strain in the QD core resulting from the lattice-mismatched heterojunction. Using a very simple spherically anisotropic strain model, we calculated the subband, interband transition, and binding energies for a zinc-blende (ZB) CdSe/CdS QD. These results compare favorably with those obtained from the finite element analysis (FEA) considering the rectilinear cubic crystal anisotropy.

This paper presents a four-noded quadrilateral $C^0$ strain plate element for the analysis of thick laminated composite plates. The element formulation is based on: 1) the third-order shear deformation theory; 2) assumed strain element formulation; and 3) interrelated edge displacements and rotations along element boundaries. Unlike the existing displacement-type composite plate elements based on the third-order theory, which rely on the $C^1$-continuity formulation, the present plate element is of $C^0$-continuity, and its element stiffness matrix is evaluated explicitly. Because of the third-order expansion of the in-plane displacements through the thickness, the resulting theory and hence elements do not need shear correction factors. The explicit element stiffness matrix makes the present element more computationally efficient than the composite plate elements using numerical integration for the analysis of thick layered composite plates.

Globally, the poultry industry has a significant economic role, especially in Africa, where small farm holders contribute substantially to the national gross domestic product (GDP). Poultry feeding costs are rapidly increasing and account for over 60 percent of the production costs, but efficient feed formulation practices are a sustainable way of reducing the price. Ghanaian farmers use methods such as the rule of thumb, personal experience, and intuition to solve feed formulation problems. This study showed that the least-cost starter ration price decreased by 1.61%, and the least-cost finisher ration price decreased by 4.48%, indicating that non-conventional feed ingredients have a high economic value.

Background: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation is increasing, as rituximab has become widely used for B-cell lymphoma. Thus, prevention and management of HBV reactivation are important in HBV-endemic areas. Methods: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation in HBV surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive patients and HBsAg-negative/HBV core antibody (HBcAb)-positive patients who received rituximab-containing chemotherapy was investigated by the Asia Lymphoma Study Group via retrospective (n=340), and the results were compared to cross-sectional analysis with patients who were prospectively monitored in a single institute (n=127). The goal of the study was to define the frequency of HBV reactivation and the efficacy of antiviral prophylaxis. Results: HBV reactivation was found in 27.8% of HBsAg-positive patients (45/162) in the retrospective analysis, being significantly less frequent in patients receiving antiviral prophylaxis than those not (22.9%, 32/140 versus 59.1%, 13/22; p<0.001). Lamivudine was most commonly used (96/162, 59.3%), but more than 20% of HBsAg-positive patients showed breakthrough HBV reactivation. In the cross-sectional analysis, a reduced rate of HBV reactivation occurred for entecavir as compared with lamivudine prophylaxis (6.3% versus 39.3%; p<0.05). HBV DNA monitoring of HBsAg-negative/HBcAb-positive patients in the cross-sectional analysis showed HBV reactivation in only 2.4% of cases. Conclusions: This is the largest study of HBV reactivation in patients receiving rituximab-containing chemotherapy to date, and we defined the probability of HBV reactivation in an HBV-endemic region.
