The joint effect of different concentration of Cd2+ and ionic liquid on the growth of wheat seedlings

        Zhonglin Chen,Qian Zhou,Feng Leng,Bing Dai,Xueyang Zhao,Weichen Zhang,Neng Liu,Wei Guan,Kui Liu 대한환경공학회 2017 Environmental Engineering Research Vol.22 No.3

The joint effect of different concentrations (0.05-0.375 mmol/L) of Cd2+ and various concentrations (50-400 mg/L) of [C3mim][OAc] on the growth and physiology of wheat seedlings were investigated. The toxicity of Cd2+ could be significantly reduced by lower concentrations (50-200 mg/L) of [C3mim][OAc]. With higher concentration (≥ 300 mg/L) of [C3mim][OAc], the reduction became less, and compared to Cd2+ stress only, the toxicity of 400 mg/L [C3mim][OAc] increased. As for different Cd2+ concentrations, the optimal reduction depends on the balance between the exact concentration of Cd2+ and [C3mim][OAc]: With low Cd2+ concentration (0.05-0.250 mmol/L) requiring 50 mg/L [C3mim][OAc], it could reach a dynamic equilibrium, while high Cd2+ concentration (0.375 mmol/L) requiring 100 mg/L [C3mim][OAc]. The growth and physiological indexes of wheat seedlings show a decrease in toxicity compared to the Cd alone treatment, when the dynamic equilibrium is reached. The concentration of Cd2+ in leaf tissues showed that low concentration (50-200 mg/L) of [C3mim][OAc] can reduce the toxicity of Cd2+ (0.05-0.375 mmol/L) by decreasing the level of Cd2+ concentration in the tissues, whereas the higher concentration (≥ 300 mg/L) of [C3mim][OAc] can increase the concentration of Cd2+.

Comparison of the comb cell structure of Apis dorsata (Hymenoptera: Apidae) in two areas of China

        Deng Shangkao,Huang Rong,Meng Qingxin,Yang Shunhua,Zhao Wenzheng,Tian Yakai,Dong Xia,Dong Kun,Gong Xueyang 한국응용곤충학회 2023 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.26 No.2

The comb cell structure of Apis dorsata in different ecoregions is rarely reported. This study compared the dif ferences in the comb cell structure of Apis dorsata from Menghai of Yunnan Province and Chengmai of Hainan Province, China. Accordingly, parameters such as brood comb thickness, the width of ten consecutive brood cells, cell diameter, depth, inclination angle, and the side length of the cell mouth were measured. The results showed that within the same area, the widths of ten consecutive cells and single-cell diameter in the 0 ◦ direction were significantly bigger than that in the 60 ◦ and 120 ◦ directions, however, there was no significant difference for the same between the 60 ◦ and 120 ◦ directions. The average width of ten consecutive cells and the single-cell diameter showed significant differences between the two areas. These were significantly bigger in Menghai than in Chengmai. The average thickness of the brood comb, cell depth, and side length of the cell mouth were also significantly higher in Menghai than in Chengmai, however, the cell inclination angle showed no regional difference. These differences in the comb cell structure of Apis dorsata may be due to the difference in the ecological environment of the two areas. This study revealed the structural characteristics of the comb cells of Apis dorsata in different areas of China, increasing our biological knowledge of this bee species.

Impact of Apis cerana cerana (Hymenoptera: Apidae) body size on newly built cell size

        Li Hui,Deng Shangkao,Meng Qingxin,Yang Shunhua,Jiang Wutao,Zhao Wenzheng,Tian Yakai,Dong Kun,Gong Xueyang 한국응용곤충학회 2024 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.27 No.3

The influence of cell structure size on the morphological development of honey bees has been widely studied. However, the effect of the honey bees’ body size on the cell size they build remains unclear. This study inves tigated the influence of the body size of Apis cerana cerana on the structure size of newly built honey cells, worker cells, and drone cells. Accordingly, we established colonies of A. c. cerana with large and small body-size workers. We then analyzed the birth weight and seven external morphological characteristics of workers, as well as the depth and diameter of their newly built honey cells, worker cells, and drone cells. We found significant differ ences in the birth weight, proboscis length, thorax width, right forewing length, femur length, tibia length, and metatarsus length of the right hindleg, and total length of the 3 rd and 4 th tergite of workers from large-body-size colonies (LBSC) and small-body-size colonies (SBSC). Also, the depth and diameter of the newly built cells by LBSC were significantly larger than those by SBSC. The body size of workers positively correlated with the size of newly built cells. This study emphasizes the influence of workers’ body size on the structural dimensions of newly constructed cells, providing insights into the comb-building biology of A. c. cerana.

Association between Higher Blood Pressure and Risk of Diabetes Mellitus in Middle-Aged and Elderly Chinese Adults

        Xue Yang,Jian Chen,An Pan,Jason H.Y. Wu,Fei Zhao,Yue Xie,Yi Wang,Yi Ye,Xiong-Fei Pan,Chun-Xia Yang 대한당뇨병학회 2020 Diabetes and Metabolism Journal Vol.44 No.3

Background: To examine the prospective association between higher blood pressure (BP) and risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in middle-aged and elderly Chinese adults. Methods: A total of 9,642 middle-aged and elderly Chinese adults (≥45 years old; 47.30% men) without diabetes from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study were included for analyses. Participants were categorized into three groups: normal BP, prehypertension, and hypertension, according to the 2010 Chinese Guidelines for the Management of Hypertension. The incidence of T2DM was determined by self-reported physician diagnosis during two follow-up surveys conducted in 2013 to 2014 and 2015 to 2016. Results: During the 4-year follow-up, 429 participants (4.45%) developed T2DM, including 3.51% of the men and 5.29% of the women. The incidence rates of T2DM were 2.57%, 3.75%, and 6.71% in the normal BP, prehypertension, and hypertension groups, respectively. After adjustment for age, sex, education level, residence, smoking status, alcohol consumption, body mass index, waist circumference, and dyslipidemia, both prehypertension (odds ratio [OR], 1.32; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.98 to 1.77) and hypertension (OR, 2.02; 95% CI, 1.54 to 2.64) were associated with increased risk of T2DM, compared to those with a normal BP. The ORs associated with T2DM were 1.08 (95% CI, 1.03 to 1.13) for an increase of 10 mm Hg in systolic BP and 1.06 (95% CI, 1.01 to 1.10) for an increase of 5 mm Hg in diastolic BP. Conclusion: Higher BP is a risk factor for T2DM in middle-aged and elderly Chines. It may be a potential target for diabetes prevention.
