      • Overview of Transmission Characteristics in Novel Wireless Underground Sensor Networks

        Many applications for agricultural information and environment monitoring exploit buried sensors wired-connected to the soil surface for information retrieval. A novel wireless underground sensor networks is a specialized kind of wireless sensor network that communicates through soil. The wireless underground sensor networks (WUSN) consist of wireless devices that are buried completely under dense soil and operate below the ground surface. In this paper, the application research of the wireless underground sensor networks is described. Experimental measurements of the signal strength and packet error rate are presented at the frequency of 433MHz, which show a good agreement with the theoretical studies. The results show the buried depth of the WUSN node and the volumetric water content of the soil are the most important factor to adversely affect the communication.

        A Novel Video Stitching Method for Multi-Camera Surveillance Systems

        This paper proposes a novel video stitching method that improves real-time performance and visual quality of a multi-camera video surveillance system. A two-stage seam searching algorithm based on enhanced dynamic programming is proposed. It can obtain satisfactory result and achieve better real-time performance than traditional seam-searching methods. The experiments show that the computing time is reduced by 66.4% using the proposed algorithm compared with enhanced dynamic programming, while the seam-searching accuracy is maintained. A real-time local update scheme reduces the deformation effect caused by moving objects passing through the seam, and a seam-based local color transfer model is constructed and applied to achieve smooth transition in the overlapped area, and overcome the traditional pixel blending methods. The effectiveness of the proposed method is proved in the experiements.

        Background Subtraction for Moving Cameras based on trajectory-controlled segmentation and Label Inference

        We propose a background subtraction method for moving cameras based on trajectory classification, image segmentation and label inference. In the trajectory classification process, PCA-based outlier detection strategy is used to remove the outliers in the foreground trajectories. Combining optical flow trajectory with watershed algorithm, we propose a trajectory-controlled watershed segmentation algorithm which effectively improves the edge-preserving performance and prevents the over-smooth problem. Finally, label inference based on Markov Random field is conducted for labeling the unlabeled pixels. Experimental results on the motionseg database demonstrate the promising performance of the proposed approach compared with other competing methods.

      • Study on wireless underground sensor networks for remote irrigation monitoring system

        Wireless underground sensor networks (WUSN) has wide applications in environmental information monitoring. It plays a vital role in the handling and management of water resources for irrigation. Because it prevents radio interference, improves real-time acquisition of information and reduces energy consumptions. In this work, WUSN was used to collect soil temperature and moisture information of an irrigation system. The base station used the sensor nodes to collect the data in a particular area. All nodes in the networks were the same and energies were constrained. According to the schedule, WUSN nodes turn on or off their radio module to save energy. When the collected data was less than the threshold value, the base station would inform the controller perform a motor control action through setting the corresponding. In this paper, system used data fusion method for saving energy to send collected data to the base station. The testing showed that the system was successfully implemented on a real-time remote monitoring for irrigation. The result was a low cost, highly reliable and simple infrastructure for the collection of soil data over a distributed area in agricultural environments.

        Alpha-Hemolysin from Staphylococcus aureus Obstructs Yeast-Hyphae Switching and Diminishes Pathogenicity in Candida albicans

        The use of antibiotics can disrupt the body’s natural balance and increase the susteptibility of patients towards fungal infections. Candida albicans is a dimorphic opportunistic fungal pathogen with niches similar to those of bacteria. Our aim was to study the interaction between this pathogen and bacteria to facilitate the control of C. albicans infection. Alpha-hemolysin (Hla), a protein secreted from Staphylococcus aureus, causes cell wall damage and impedes the yeast–hyphae transition in C. albicans. Mechanistically, Hla stimulation triggered the formation of reactive oxygen species that damaged the cell wall and mitochondria of C. albicans. The cell cycle was arrested in the G0/G1 phase, CDC42 was downregulated, and Ywp1 was upregulated, disrupting yeast hyphae switching. Subsequently, hyphae development was inhibited. In mouse models, C. albicans pretreated with Hla reduced the C. albicans burden in skin and vaginal mucosal infections, suggesting that S. aureus Hla can inhibit hyphal development and reduce the pathogenicity of candidiasis in vivo.

      • Survey on a Novel Wireless Sensor Network Communication at 433MHz Frequency

        Wireless underground sensor networks (WUSN) are a promising new technology for monitoring soil information with a high spatial and temporal resolution for large areas. However, the significantly high attenuation caused by soil is the main challenge for the feasibility of WUSN. Recent theoretical results highlight the potential of smaller attenuation rates with the use of smaller radio frequencies. In this paper, experimental measurements have been conducted with commodity sensor nodes at the frequency of 433 MHz. Experiments are run to examine the received signal strength of correctly received packets and the packet error rate for a communication link. The tests show the potential feasibility of the WUSN with the use of powerful RF transceivers at 433MHz frequency. Moreover, we also illustrate a classification for wireless underground sensor network communication. Finally, we conclude that the effects of burial depth, inter-node distance and volumetric water content of the soil on the signal strength and packet error rate.

        Electrostatic Discharge Characteristics of Cable Discharge Event

        The characteristics of cable electrostatic discharge event are investigated, which has been proved to be a hazard leading to ESD damage. The electrostatic voltage under operations on cable is measured and the effects of the discharge parameters including electrostatic voltage, cable length, cable type and the distance to the ground on cable discharge event (CDE) are studied experimentally. The CDE current waveform appears as a sequence of oscillating rectangular pulses with fast rising time, short pulse width but high amplitude. The current amplitude linearly increases with the electrostatic voltage, while the pulse width is mainly determined by the cable length. The distance to the ground and the cable type has little influence once the distance is relatively large. The discharge by cable with multiple cores is also investigated. Theoretical discussion is made to explain the phenomenon and its mechanism.

        CHIRAL CARBON NANOTUBES AND CARBON NANOTUBE CHIRAL COMPOSITES:PREPARATION AND APPLICATIONS

        A review of preparation of chiral carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon nanotube chiral composites is presented. Novel chiral separation science and technology based on CNTs is analyzed and discussed, with the emphasis in two topics. The first topic concerns the possibility of application of chiral CNTs in resolution and chiral sensing. The second topic centers on the subject of enantioseparation based on CNT chiral composites. Despite the crucial functionalization of CNTs using chiral selectors, better resolution could also be achieved by using a mixture of CNTs and optical pure substances as chiral selectors. Due to their ability of improving the degree of enantioseparation, CNTs could find their potential applications in the resolution in the future.

      • Design of the Thermistor Tester based on MSP430

        With the development of the single-chip microcomputer and integrated circuits, thermal resistance tester has gradually replaced the traditional temperature test equipment. The design uses the low power consumption MSP430 microcomputer as the core processor, heating power is produced by the switch tube FSDM0565RB, EMI filters is joined in the switch power supply in order to inhibit the influence of high frequency interference in AC power network on the equipment. Ref voltage of microcomputer generates through the transformation of voltage conversion chip AMS1117, signal input port uses voltage follower to minimize signal noise. The system circuit also joined some protection circuit, prevention of circuit false operation, etc. In the software design, measuring resistance judgment is achieved through the difference value of comparison measuring and standard resistance, which can shorten measure time and is very suitable for batch into production. Test results show that the thermal tester has a good stability and reliability, and meet the requirements of design.

        Investigating the Prevalence of Dementia and Its Associated Risk Factors in a Chinese Nursing Home

        Background and Purpose The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of and risk factors for dementia in residents aged 65 years and older in a Chinese nursing home. Methods A cross-sectional study was carried out in a nursing home located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. Cognitive status, including the presence of dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), was measured using a combination of medical history and objective cognitive assessments. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to predict the associated risk factors. Results In total, 943 residents (334 males and 609 females) aged 84.00±6.67 years (mean± SD) were included. Dementia was diagnosed in 420 (44.5%) residents, and MCI was diagnosed in 195 (20.7%). Mild, moderate, and severe dementia were present in 20.3%, 14.0%, and 65.7% of those in the dementia group, respectively. Logistic regression analysis revealed that dementia was associated with a low education level (p=0.000), an advanced age (p=0.010), and a history of stroke (p=0.023). Conclusions Our study found a high prevalence of dementia in a Chinese nursing home, and a high prevalence of patients with severe dementia. Risk factors for dementia included a low educational level, an advanced age, and a history of stroke. Appropriate interventions need to be applied to this population.
