Brain injury in extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation: translational to clinical research

The addition of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) to conventional cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), termed extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR), has significantly improved survival in selected patient populations. Despite this advancement, significant neurological impairment persists in approximately half of survivors. ECPR represents a potential advancement for patients who experience refractory cardiac arrest (CA) due to a reversible etiology and do not regain spontaneous circulation. Important risk factors for acute brain injury (ABI) in ECPR include lack of perfusion, reperfusion, and altered cerebral autoregulation. The initial hypoxic-ischemic injury caused by no-flow and low-flow states after CA and during CPR is compounded by reperfusion, hyperoxia during ECMO support, and nonpulsatile blood flow. Additionally, ECPR patients are at risk for Harlequin syndrome with peripheral cannulation, which can lead to preferential perfusion of cerebral vessels with deoxygenated blood. Lastly, the oxygenator membrane is prothrombotic and requires systemic anticoagulation. The two competing phenomena result in thrombus formation, hemolysis, and thrombocytopenia, increasing the risk of ischemic and hemorrhagic ABI. In addition to clinical studies, we assessed available ECPR animal models to identify the mechanisms underlying ABI at the cellular level. Standardized multimodal neurological monitoring may facilitate early detection of and intervention for ABI. With the increasing use of ECPR, it is critical to understand the pathophysiology of ABI, its prevention, and the management strategies for improving the outcomes of ECPR. Translational and clinical research focusing on acute ABI immediately after ECMO cannulation and its short- and long-term neurological outcomes are warranted.
Heterogeneous Mercury Oxidation on Au(111) from First Principles

<P>Density functional theory (DFT) studies of mercury oxidation on Au(111) are conducted to determine the potential Hg oxidation mechanisms taking place on catalytic gold surfaces by using the Perdew and Wang approximation (PW91) described by a generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The Hg oxidation was examined via a Langmuir–Hinshelwood mechanism where each Hg<SUP>0</SUP> and Cl<SUB>2</SUB> (or HCl) species is separately adsorbed on the gold surface and the bimolecular reaction occurs through the formation of bound HgCl and HgCl<SUB>2</SUB>. For this, the Climbing Image-Nudged Elastic Band (CI-NEB) method has been employed to calculate the activation energies of HgCl and HgCl<SUB>2</SUB> formation pathways. In the three-step Hg oxidation mechanism (Hg → HgCl → HgCl<SUB>2</SUB>), the second Cl attachment step is endothermic which is the reaction rate-limiting step, while the first Cl attachment step is exothermic. This observation implies that Hg oxidation prefers a pathway in which HgCl and HgCl<SUB>2</SUB> are formed, rather than a pathway directly oxidizing Hg to HgCl<SUB>2</SUB>. In the presence of H atoms due to HCl dissociation on the Au surface, the H atoms lower the activation energy for Hg oxidation by consuming the electron charge of Au atoms, thereby weakening the strength of interaction between Cl and the Au surface and lowering an energy required to detach Cl from the Au surface. This mechanism is in the absence of site competition on the Au surface. <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>As the behavior of mercury generated from the combustion of mercury-containing fuels is highly dependent upon mercury speciation, many studies have investigated mercury speciation following combustion of various fuels. Unburned carbon and the content of chlorine (Cl), copper (Cu), and iron (Fe) compounds in ash are reported to affect the behavior of mercury. This study was conducted to understand the important factors impacting behavior of mercury from single coal combustion and co-combustion of dried sewage sludge with coal. Factors reported in previous studies were selected as potential factors affecting mercury oxidation and retention. Six coal and six dried sewage sludge samples were used to conduct single coal combustion and co-combustion tests. Each fuel sample was combusted in a lab-scale drop tube combustion system. Concentrations of elemental and oxidized mercury were determined using the Ontario Hydro Method. Ash samples collected on the bottom of the combustion system were analyzed to determine unburned carbon and mercury retention percentages. Unburned carbon and Cl were found to be important in both oxidation and retention of mercury for single coal combustion. Cl, Cu, and Fe content increased the oxidation of elemental mercury generated from co-combustion of dried sewage sludge with coal.</P>

This research is intended to provide marketing practitioners with an overview of web analytics to explore the issue of how to define and measure the effectiveness of social media through analyzing the various activities of current/potential consumers as well as provide a comprehensive analysis of the effectiveness of digital content marketing using social media. These analytics answer broad questions about which types of social media metrics are best at referring traffic, about conversations at the organization’s website, and about comparing different social media channels, such as Facebook and Twitter in this study. These analytics employ time series analysis to specifically address activities in SNSs that effectively drive traffic to a website and accomplish business goals. This study is one of the first empirical investigations in the marketing communication field related to measuring social media’s effectiveness. The major goal of this study is to demonstrate the value of businesses’ efforts and to optimize their digital/social marketing strategy using web analytics.

Facile synthesis of tetrapodal ZnO nanoparticles was conducted using a modified French process in which oxygen and nitrogen flow rates were controlled. The synthesized ZnO nanoparticles exhibit photoluminescent characteristics depending on the synthesis conditions. Electron microscopic analysis revealed that the tetrapodal nanostructure of ZnO with high crystallinity which was confirmed by XRD analyses could be controlled by a variation of O2/N2 feed ratio. Typical photoluminescence with UV and blue emission of the tetrapodal ZnO nanoparticles was influenced by the particle size and crystallinity,which is manipulated by the oxidation condition.
