Ignition performance of green hypergolic fuels with hydrogen peroxide

Ionic liquids (ILs) have been emerged as a green hypergolic fuel for space propulsion. They are ultra-fast igniting with white fuming nitric acid, red fuming nitric acid and nitrogen tetroxide oxidizers. However, these oxidizers are corrosive and generate toxic fumes, therefore, require the safety precautions during handling. Therefore, the hypergolic combination of an environment friendly oxidizer, hydrogen peroxide and ILs fuel has been investigated. ILs, 1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium cyanoborohydride ([EMIM][BH3CN]) and 1-allyl-3-ethyl imidazolium cyanoborohydride ([AEIM][BH3CN]) exhibited longer ignition delay time with 95% hydrogen peroxide. Hence, the ignition delay (ID) time was monitored by addition of metal and non-metal additives in IL, [EMIM][BH3CN]. The additive, 15% 1,3-dimethyl imidazole copper iodide in IL, [EMIM][BH3CN] exhibited an ID time about 36 ms. In addition, the effect of temperature on hypergolic ignition behavior of ILs were also studied. The environment friendly hypergolic ILs propellant combination can be the alternatives to conventional toxic hydrazine based propellant combination.
