Selective transport of gallium from HCl media containing other ions such as Zn, Co, and Ni, by polymerinclusion membranes (PIM), based on CTA/PVC blend using trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) as carrier and 2-nitrophenylpentylether (2-NPPE) as plasticizer is studied. The effect of various parameters such as the HCl concenration in thefeed, HCl concenration in the stripping phase, carrier (TOPO) concentration, 2-NPPE concentration, the cellulose triacetate(CTA)/poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) as the polymer-blend was experimentally studied and the optimum conditions weredetermined. It was possible to selectively extract gallium ions from the ions (Zn, Co, and Ni) in the acidic solutions. Theseparation factors of gallium over Zn, Co, and Ni, at the optimum conditions, were found to be of 963, 702, and 514,respectively, for the feed solution of 100mg/dm3 Ga, 1,000mg/dm3 Zn, 600mg/dm3 Co, and 600mg/dm3 Ni.

A study of the tissue depletion of florfenicol (FFC) administered orally to pigs at a dose of 0.05 kg/ton feed for 7 days was performed. Sixteen healthy cross swine were administered with FFC. Four treated animals were arbitrarily selected to be sacrificed 1, 3 and 5 days after the end of treatment. FFC residue concentrations in muscle, liver, kidney, and fat were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with ultraviolet photometric detector at 230 nm. The correlation coefficient (R2) of the calibration curve for florfenicol amine (FFCa) was > 0.997 and the limits of detection and quantification were 0.012 and 0.040 μg/mL, respectively. Recovery rates in swine edible tissues ranged from 79.1 to 93.5%. In the FFC-treated group, FFC residues at 3 days post-treatment were below the maximum residue limits (MRLs) in muscle, kidney and fat, and those at 5 days post-administration were below the MRLs in all edible tissues. These results suggest that the withdrawal period of FFC after the drug treatment might be 5 days, which is a sufficient amount of time for reduction of the FFC residues below the MRLs in all edible tissues.
Toxicity of a combination of florfrenicol and acetaminophen in pigs administered at overdose

This study examined the overdose toxicity of Super-Neophensan, containing florfenicol and acetaminophen, upon pigs. SNP-3.0 (n=10) was administered at the dosage level of 3 kg/ton feed for 7 consecutive days, which is 3 times the recommended dose based on the guidelines of the manufacturer, and the control group (CON) (n=10) was administered the normal diet without the drug. The body weight, weight gain and feed efficiency in SNP-3.0 treated with the drug for 14 days post-administration showed no significant differences compared with those in CON. In hematological and blood biochemical analyses, all parameters were not affected by over-dosage of the drug. In the same way, there were no significant differences between SNP-3.0 and CON on markers for liver and kidney functions. As no adverse effects were observed with the drug in an overdose oral toxicity test, this study suggests that the drug was identified as a safe agent in pigs administered with three times the recommended dose.

A study investigated the effects of a mixture of Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) and Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis) on diarrhea incidence, immune response, and fecal microflora counts in post-weaning piglets. One hundred 28-day-old piglets were randomly assigned to five treatment groups: negative control (NC), free of antibiotics; positive control (PC), 0.03% chlortetracycline; LB 1, a mixture of L. plantarum and B. subtilis (LB) 0.5 kg/ton feed; LB 2, LB 1.0 kg/ton feed; and LB 3, LB 2.0 kg/ton feed. Diarrhea scores for LB 2 and LB 3 from the 2nd week were significantly reduced compared to NC (P < 0.05). In terms of the level of IgG and IFN-γ, all treatment groups were significantly higher than NC (P < 0.05), and the IgG level of LB 3 was significantly higher than that of PC (P < 0.05). Furthermore, fecal lactic acid bacteria (LAB) counts for LB 2 and LB 3 were significantly higher than those of NC and PC (P < 0.05). In addition, fecal Enterobacteriaceae (ENT) counts for PC, LB 2 and LB 3 were significantly lower than those of NC (P < 0.05). Based on the results from this study, it was concluded that a combination of L. plantarum and B. subtilis strains could be used as potential alternatives to antibiotics to prevent diarrhea incidence in piglets.

Despite the fact that asbestos is a known carcinogen to humans, it is still used in industrialized countries, especially Asian countries. The global incidence of asbestos-related diseases (ARDs) due to the past use of asbestos, continues to increase, although many countries have adopted a total ban on asbestos use. The implementation of effective strategies to eliminate ARDs is therefore an important challenge in Asia, where asbestos is still mined and consumed. Collaborative efforts and strategies at the local and international levels are vital, in the pursuit toward the elimination of ARDs in this region.

Cobalt and nickel are among the most important nonferrous metals. The using of flat sheet supported liquid membranes (FSSLMs) to remove metals from wastewaters has been used actively by the scientific and industrial communities. In this study, the selective separation of cobalt from thiocyanate solutions containing cobalt and nickel by FSSLM was examined using tri-n-octylamine (Alamine 300) as carrier. The FSSLM was consisted of extractant, flat sheet support and organic solvent. The various parameters were studied to determine the optimum extraction and striping conditions of cobalt and nickel. These parameters were stirring speeds of phases, NH4SCN concentration, pH, diluent type, extractant concentration, stripping reagent concentration and modifier concentration. Concentration of cobalt and nickel were determined by Shimadzu AA-6701GF spectrophotometer. In the optimum conditions,selective separation of cobalt was achieved with an efficiency of 98.4% within 8 h, for equimolar feed mixtures, 400 mg/L Co + 400 mg/L Ni, and the separation factor of Co(II) over Ni(II) was 234.4. In addition,for nonequimolar feed mixtures, 500 mg/L Co + 1000 mg/L Ni, Ni in excess, selective separation of cobalt was 99.9%, and the separation factor of Co was 506 in the same time.

Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens) and Mycobacterium fortuitum (M. fortuitum) are associated with considerable diseases in animals and human. In this study, the disinfection efficacy of a commercial disinfectant composed to povidone-iodine (PVI) was evaluated against C. perfringens and M. fortuitum. A bactericidal efficacy test by broth dilution method was used to determine the lowest effective dilution of the disinfectant following exposure to C. perfringens and M. fortuitum for 30 min at 4°C. The disinfectant and test bacteria were diluted with hard water (HW) or organic matter suspension (OM) according to treatment condition. On HW condition, the bactericidal activity of the disinfectant against C. perfringens and M. fortuitum was 50 and 80 fold dilutions, respectively. On OM condition, the bactericidal activity of the disinfectant against both C. perfringens and M. fortuitum was 15 fold dilutions. As the disinfectant composed to PVI possesses bactericidal efficacy against C. perfringens and M. fortuitum, the disinfectant solution can be used to control the spread of bacterial diseases.

Colloidal quantum dots are nano semiconductor materials that have been found in many applications, producing multiple exciton generation, unique optical and electronic properties, adjustable in size and bandwidth. Synthesized QDs are expected to exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yield and monodisperse properties according to their application area. Cannula method was adapted together with the organometallic synthesis method for the first time in the literature to increase the photoluminescence quantum yield of organometallic CdTe QD and minimize the full width at half maximum value of the photoluminescence band. Injection of precursors by the Cannula method is much faster than the injecting with the conventional method of using a glass syringe, which limits the size distribution in the solution during synthesis. In addition, the fastest injection method using Cannula method yields the shortest full width half maximum value of 27.20 nm for CdTe QDs in the literature. The photoluminescence quantum yield value of the CdTe QDs synthesized by the classical method was 8.12±2.1%, while the photoluminescence quantum yield of the CdTe QDs synthesized by the Cannula method was increased to 25.66±2.1%.

This study investigated the changes in appetite and behavior of cattle and pigs after foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccination. This study involved ten calves and ten pigs, each divided into two groups of five animals. One group of each animal was vaccinated with an FMD vaccine (FMD-V), and the other group was used as a non-treated control (CON). Each animal’s appetite and behavior were observed before vaccination and for seven days post-vaccination. In the FMD-V groups, appetite and behavior scores during the seven days post-vaccination were significantly decreased compared to those in the CON groups. The only exception was the seventh day post-vaccination in the swine behavior scores
