        Defense Response to Pathogens Through Epigenetic Regulation in Rice

        Epigenetic factors have recently emerged as key regulators of the defense response to pathogens in plants. The epigenetic mechanisms underlying defense regulation have been investigated mostly in Arabidopsis, while our understanding of the epigenetic regulation of defense in rice is limited. In this review, we summarize recent findings surrounding epigenetic mechanisms for defense in rice, primarily focusing on DNA methylation, histone modification, and small RNA regulation. In particular, we focused on RNA-directed DNA methylation (RdDM) and other epigenetic regulatory mechanisms that are involved in disease resistance. Finally, we explored potential epigenetic factors that might regulate the defense response in rice by analyzing available microarray data that can be used to uncover details of epigenetics regulation.

        Low-Power Direct Conversion Transceiver for 915 MHz Band IEEE 802.15.4b Standard Based on 0.18 μm CMOS Technology

        This paper presents the experimental results of a lowpower low-cost RF transceiver for the 915 MHz band IEEE 802.15.4b standard. Low power and low cost are achieved by optimizing the transceiver architecture and circuit design techniques. The proposed transceiver shares the analog baseband section for both receive and transmit modes to reduce the silicon area. The RF transceiver consumes 11.2 mA in receive mode and 22.5 mA in transmit mode under a supply voltage of 1.8 V, in which 5 mA of quadrature voltage controlled oscillator is included. The proposed transceiver is implemented in a 0.18 μm CMOS process and occupies 10 mm2 of silicon area.

        Unsupervised Outpatients Clustering: A Case Study in Avissawella Base Hospital, Sri Lanka

        Nowadays, Electronic Medical Record (EMR) has just implemented at few hospitals for Outpatient Department (OPD). OPD is the diversified data, it includes demographic and diseases of patient, so it need to be clustered in order to explore the hidden rules and the relationship of data types of patient's information. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for unsupervised clustering of patient's demographic and diseases in OPD. Firstly, we collect data from a hospital at OPD. Then, we preprocess and transform data by using powerful techniques such as standardization, label encoder, and categorical encoder. After obtaining transformed data, we use some strong experiments, techniques, and evaluation to select the best number of clusters and best clustering algorithm. In addition, we use some tests and measurements to analyze and evaluate cluster tendency, models, and algorithms. Finally, we obtain the results to analyze and discover new knowledge, meanings, and rules. Clusters that are found out in this research provide knowledge to medical managers and doctors. From these information, they can improve the patient management methods, patient arrangement methods, and doctor's ability. In addition, it is a reference for medical data scientist to mine OPD dataset.

        FGW-FER: Lightweight Facial Expression Recognition with Attention

        The field of facial expression recognition (FER) has been actively researched to improve human-computer interaction. In recent years, deep learning techniques have gained popularity for addressing FER, with numerous studies proposing end-to-end frameworks that stack or widen significant convolutional neural network layers. While this has led to improved performance, it has also resulted in larger model sizes and longer inference times. To overcome this challenge, our work introduces a novel lightweight model architecture. The architecture incorporates three key factors: Depth-wise Separable Convolution, Residual Block, and Attention Modules. By doing so, we aim to strike a balance between model size, inference speed, and accuracy in FER tasks. Through extensive experimentation on popular benchmark FER datasets, our proposed method has demonstrated promising results. Notably, it stands out due to its substantial reduction in parameter count and faster inference time, while maintaining accuracy levels comparable to other lightweight models discussed in the existing literature.

        Outcomes of liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma: Experiences from a Vietnamese center

        Backgrounds/Aims: Liver transplantation (LT) provides a favorable outcome for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and was launched in Vietnam in 2004. In this study, we evaluated the short-term and long-term outcomes of LT and its risk factors. Methods: This retrospective study analyzed HCC patients who underwent LT at Viet Duc University hospital, Vietnam, from 01/2012–03/2022. The following data were gathered: demographics, virus infection, tumor characteristics, alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) level, Child-Pugh and MELD scores, selection criteria, type of LT, complications, 30-day mortality, and disease-free and overall survival (DFS and OS). Results: Fifty four patients were included, the mean age was 55.39 ± 8.46 years. Nearly 90% had hepatitis B virus-related HCC. The median (interquartile range) AFP level was 16.2 (88.7) ng/mL. The average MELD score was 10.57 ± 5.95; the rate of Child-Pugh A and B were 70.4% and 18.5%, respectively. Nearly 40% of the patients were within Milan criteria, brain-dead donor was 83.3%. Hepatic and portal vein thrombosis occurred in 0% and 1.9%, respectively; hepatic artery thrombosis 1.9%, biliary leakage 5.6%, and postoperative hemorrhage 3.7%. Ninety-day mortality was 5.6%. Five-year DFS and OS were 79.3% and 81.4%, respectively. MELD score and Child- Pugh score were predictive factors for DFS and OS (p < 0.05). In multivariate analysis, Child-Pugh score was the only significant factor (p < 0.05). Conclusions: In Vietnam, LT is an effective therapy for HCC with an acceptable complication rate, mortality rate, and good survival outcomes, and should be further encouraged.

      • A low-power CMOS direct conversion receiver with 3-dB NF and 30-kHz flicker-noise corner for 915-MHz band IEEE 802.15.4 ZigBee standard

        A low-power low flicker-noise receiver front-end for 915-MHz-band IEEE 802.15.4 standard in 0.18-μm CMOS technology is implemented. A power-constrained simultaneous noise and input matching low-noise amplifier (LNA) can be achieved by using a conventional inductive degeneration cascode amplifier with an extra gate-source capacitor. In combination with the LNA, a passive mixer showing low 1/f noise performance is adopted to convert the RF signal directly to the baseband signal. The measured results show a conversion gain of 30 dB and a noise figure of 3 dB with 1/f noise corner frequency of 30 kHz. Two-tone test measurements indicate -5-dBm input third-order intercept point and +45-dBm input second-order intercept point. The RF receiver front-end dissipates 2 mA from a 1.8-V supply.

        Alpha-Glucosidase Inhibitory Activity of Saponins Isolated from Vernonia gratiosa Hance

        Species belonging to the Vernonia (Asteraceae), the largest genus in the tribe Vernonieae (consisting of about 1,000 species), are widely used in food and medicine. These plants are rich sources of bioactive sesquiterpene lactones and steroid saponins, likely including many as yet undiscovered chemical components. A phytochemical investigation resulted in the separation of three new stigmastane-type steroidal saponins (1 – 3), designated as vernogratiosides A–C, from whole plants of V. gratiosa. Their structures were elucidated based on infrared spectroscopy  (IR), one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (2D NMR), high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HR-ESI-MS), and electronic circular dichroism analyses (ECD), as well as chemical reactivity. Molecular docking analysis of representative saponins with αglucosidase inhibitory activity was performed. Additionally, the intended substances were tested for their ability to inhibit α-glucosidase activity in a laboratory setting. The results suggested that stigmastane-type steroidal saponins from V. gratiosa are promising candidate antidiabetic agents.

        Applying the IoT platform and green wave theory to control intelligent traffic lights system for urban areas in Vietnam

        This paper proposes an intelligent system performing an application with assistance of an Internet of Things (IoT) platform to control a traffic lights system. In our proposed systems, the traffic lights can be remotely controlled through the Internet. Based on IoT platform, the traffic conditions at different intersections of roads are collected and the traffic lights are controlled in a central manner. For the software part, the algorithm is designed based on the green wave theory to maximize the green bandwidth of arterial roads while addressing a challenging issue: the rapid changes of parameters including cycle time, splits, offset, non-fixed vehicles’ velocities and traffic flow along arterial roads. The issue typically happens at some areas where the transportation system is not well organized like in Vietnam. For the hardware part, PLC S7-1200 are placed at the intersections for two purposes: to control traffic lights and to collect the parameters and transmit to a host machine at the operation center. For the communication part, the TCP/IP protocol can be done using a Profinet port embedded in the PLC. Some graphical user interface captures are also presented to illustrate the operation of our proposed system.
