        Meta-Analysis of the Efficacy and Safety of Imidafenacin for Overactive Bladder Induced by Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia in Men Receiving Alpha-Blocker Therapy

        Purpose: The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of imidafenacin for overactive bladder (OAB) induced by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men receiving alpha-blocker monotherapy.Methods: We performed a systematic research of the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases, and searched for studies about alpha-blocker with or without imidafenacin treatment for OAB in patients with BPH. We also investigated the original references of the included texts.Results: Four randomized controlled trials including 779 participants with BPH (389 in the alpha-blocker+imidafenacin group and 390 in the alpha-blocker only group) were studied. The main efficacy endpoint was the Overactive Bladder Symptom Score, which showed a mean difference of -1.88 (95% confidence interval, -2.32 to -1.44; P<0.00001), suggesting that alpha-blocker and imidafenacin treatment was effective in treating men with OAB. As other primary efficacy end points, the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) total score (P=0.47), the IPSS storage symptom score (P=0.07), the IPSS voiding symptom score (P=0.60), and the IPSS quality of life score (P=0.18) indicated that 2 methods had no significant differences in treating men with OAB. In terms of safety, which was assessed using postvoid residual volume (P=0.05) and maximum flow rate (P=0.53), the analysis suggested that combination treatment was very well tolerated.Conclusions: This study suggested that imidafenacin plus alpha-blocker was an efficacious and safe treatment for OAB symptoms in BPH patients.

        Multi-RIS Aided 3D Secure Precise Wireless Transmission

        In this paper, multiple reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) aided secure precise wireless transmission (SPWT) schemes are proposed in the three-dimensional (3D) wire- less communication scenario. Unavailable direct path channels from transmitter to receivers are considered when the di- rect paths are obstructed by obstacles. Then, multiple RISs are utilized to achieve SPWT through the reflection path among transmitter, RISs and receivers in order to enhance the communication performance and energy efficiency simulta- neously. First, a maximum-signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (MSINR) scheme is proposed in a single user scenario. Then, the multi-user scenario is considered where the illegitimate users are regarded as eavesdroppers. A maximum-secrecy-rate (MSR) scheme and a maximum-signal-to-leakage-and-noise ratio (MSLNR) are proposed. The former achieves a better secrecy rate (SR) performance but incurs a higher complexity. The latter has a lower complexity than the MSR scheme with an SR performance loss. Simulation results show that both single- user scheme and multi-user scheme can achieve SPWT which transmits confidential message precisely to location of desired users. Moreover, MSLNR scheme has a lower complexity than the MSR scheme, while the SR performance is close to that of the MSR scheme.

        Transcriptome analysis of the Japanese pine sawyer beetle, Monochamus alternatus (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) by high-throughput Illumina sequencing

        The Japanese pine sawyer beetle, Monochamus alternatus Hope (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) is a serious pest management concern in pine stands. Although there are currently 1012 expressed tag sequences (ESTs) for M. alternatus deposited in public databases, this number is not sufficient for understanding the molecular biology of this insect. Next-generation sequencing technologies are essential for determining the enormous transcript sequences that are necessary for gene discovery. In the present study, the M. alternatus transcriptome was sequenced using Illumina paired-end sequencing technology. De novo assembling was conducted to generate a collection of 48,787 unigenes (average length 721 bp) that represent the first transcriptome of this species. The majority of the unigenes (78.1%) had top matches (first hit) with sequences from Tribolium castaneum (Herbst). Approximately 57.12% and 42.35% of the unigenes had significant similarities with proteins in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) non-redundant protein database (Nr) and Swiss-Prot database, respectively. A total of 9005 (18.46%) unigenes were assigned to Clusters of Orthologous Groups (COG), and 13,484 (27.64%) unigenes were assigned to Gene Ontology (GO) categories. A total of 18,915 unigenes had significant matches in the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes Pathway database (KEGG) and were assigned to 258 pathways. The unigenes encoding specific genes related to insecticide detoxification and insecticide target enzymes. These results are an invaluable resource for future studies on M. alternatus, especially for studies focused on novel gene discovery and comparative genomics.

        Adsorption properties of β-carotene on mesoporous carbon-coated honeycomb monolith: Kinetics, thermodynamics, and regeneration studies

        A facile synthesis procedure of mesoporous carbons coated monolith (MCCM) adsorbent was accomplished using furfuryl alcohol as carbon precursor, triblock copolymer Pluronic F-127 as the structure-directing agent, pyrrole as the binder for polymerization with nitric acid as catalyst and inorganic cordierite as substrate through dipcoating method. Surface chemistry revealed the dominance of acidic sites over adsorbents surface with the majority of active sites occupied by the phenolic and carboxylic groups. The MCCM adsorbent exhibited representative Type IV isotherm with a uniform-distributed PSD plot centered at 6.18 nm. A thermodynamics study involving Langmuir and Freundlich models was applied to establish the adsorption equilibrium data at temperatures of 30 to 50 oC. The Freundlich model best described the experiment data with maximum adsorption capacity of -carotene onto MCCM was 192.64mg/g. Three kinetic models, Lagergren first-order, pseudo-second-order and intra-particle diffusion models, were employed to investigate the adsorption mechanism of -carotene molecules onto active surface sites of MCCM adsorbent. Both the Lagergren first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models fitted with experimental data with the latter described perfectly with higher regression coefficient value (R2>0.99). Intra-particle diffusion featured the involvement in -carotene adsorption mechanism, but it was not the sole rate-limiting step. The negative value of Gibbs free energy change (Go) suggested the spontaneity of -carotene adsorption process. In contrast, the positive values of enthalpy change (Ho) and entropy change (So) demonstrated the endothermic nature and entropy-driven of the adsorption process, respectively. The increased Go with T indicated an increased degree of spontaneity at high temperatures. Regeneration studies of MCCM adsorbent exemplified a slight decrease in adsorption capacities after three consecutive regeneration cycles.

      • Cotransport of Titanium Dioxide and Fullerene Nanoparticles in Saturated Porous Media

        <P>This study investigated the cotransport of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (<I>n</I>TiO<SUB>2</SUB>) and fullerene nanoparticles (<I>n</I>C<SUB>60</SUB>), two of the most widely utilized nanoparticles, in saturated quartz sand under a series of ionic strengths in NaCl solutions (0.1–10 mM) at both pH 5 and 7. Under all examined ionic strengths at pH 5, both breakthrough curves and retained profiles of <I>n</I>TiO<SUB>2</SUB> in the copresence of <I>n</I>C<SUB>60</SUB> were similar to those without <I>n</I>C<SUB>60</SUB>, indicating that <I>n</I>C<SUB>60</SUB> nanoparticles copresent in suspensions did not significantly affect the transport and retention of <I>n</I>TiO<SUB>2</SUB> in quartz sand at pH 5. In contrast, under all examined ionic strengths at pH 7, the breakthrough curves of <I>n</I>TiO<SUB>2</SUB> in the copresence of <I>n</I>C<SUB>60</SUB> in suspensions were higher and the retained profiles were lower than those without <I>n</I>C<SUB>60</SUB>, which demonstrated that the presence of <I>n</I>C<SUB>60</SUB> in suspensions increased the rate of transport (decreased retention) of <I>n</I>TiO<SUB>2</SUB> in quartz sand at pH 7. Competition of deposition sites on quartz sand surfaces by the copresence of <I>n</I>C<SUB>60</SUB> was found to contribute to the increased <I>n</I>TiO<SUB>2</SUB> transport at pH 7. Under all examined ionic strength conditions at both pH 5 and 7, the breakthrough curves of <I>n</I>C<SUB>60</SUB> were reduced in the copresence of <I>n</I>TiO<SUB>2</SUB>, and the corresponding retained profiles were higher than those without <I>n</I>TiO<SUB>2</SUB>, indicating that the presence of <I>n</I>TiO<SUB>2</SUB> decreased the transport of <I>n</I>C<SUB>60</SUB> in quartz sand. Co-deposition of <I>n</I>C<SUB>60</SUB> with <I>n</I>TiO<SUB>2</SUB> in the form of <I>n</I>TiO<SUB>2</SUB>-<I>n</I>C<SUB>60</SUB> clusters as well as the deposition of <I>n</I>C<SUB>60</SUB> onto previously deposited <I>n</I>TiO<SUB>2</SUB> were responsible for the increased <I>n</I>C<SUB>60</SUB> deposition in the presence of <I>n</I>TiO<SUB>2</SUB> at pH 5, whereas deposition of <I>n</I>C<SUB>60</SUB> onto surfaces of predeposited <I>n</I>TiO<SUB>2</SUB> was found to be responsible for the increased <I>n</I>C<SUB>60</SUB> deposition at pH 7.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/esthag/2013/esthag.2013.47.issue-11/es400256d/production/images/medium/es-2013-00256d_0007.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/es400256d'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

        Drug therapy and monitoring for inflammatory bowel disease: a multinational questionnaire investigation in Asia

        Background/Aims: The incidence and prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is rising in Asia recently. The study aimed to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the current status of drug therapy and monitoring for IBD in Asia. Methods: A questionnaire investigation on drug therapy and monitoring for IBD was conducted right before the 6th Annual Meeting of Asian Organization for Crohn’s & Colitis. Questionnaires were provided to Asian physicians to fill out via emails between March and May 2018. Results: In total, responses of 166 physicians from 129 medical centers were included for analysis. Among the surveyed regions, the most average number of IBD specialist gastroenterologists and nurses was 4.8 per center in Taiwan and 2.5 per center in Mainland China, respectively. 5-Aminosalicylic acid/sulfasalazine (99.4%) was the most preferred first-line choice for mild-moderate ulcerative colitis (UC), meanwhile corticosteroid (83.7%) was widely applied for severe UC. The first-line medication for Crohn’s disease (CD) markedly varied as corticosteroid (68.1%) was the most favored in Mainland China, Japan, and South Korea, followed by infliximab (52.4%) and azathioprine (47.0%). Step-up strategy was preferred in mild-moderate UC (96.4%), while 51.8% of the physicians selected top-down treatment for CD. Only 25.9% and 17.5% of the physicians could test blood concentration of infliximab and antibody to infliximab in their hospitals, respectively. Conclusions: The current status of drug therapy and monitoring for IBD in Asia possesses commonalities as well as differences. Asian recommendations, IBD specialist teams and practice of therapeutic drug monitoring are required to improve IBD management in Asia. (Intest Res 2022;20:213-223)

      • Reduced Telomere Length in Colorectal Carcinomas

        Purpose: Telomeres play a key role in the maintenance of chromosome integrity and stability, and telomere shortening is involved in initiation and progression of malignancies. The aim of this study was to determine whether telomere length is associated with the colorectal carcinoma. Patients and methods: A total of 148 colorectal cancer (CRC) samples and corresponding adjacent non-cancerous tissues were evaluated for telomere length, P53 mutation, and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) mutation detected by fluorescent immunohistochemistry. Telomere length was estimated by real-time PCR. Samples with a T/S>1.0 have an average telomere length greater than that of the standard DNA; samples with a T/S<1.0 have an average telomere length shorter than that of the standard DNA. Results: Telomeres were shorter in CRCs than in adjacent tissues, regardless of tumor stage and grade, site, or genetic alterations (P=0.004). Telomere length in CRCs also had differences with COX-2 status (P=0.004), but did not differ with P53 status (P=0.101), tumor progression (P=0.244), gender (P=0.542), and metastasis (P=0.488). There was no clear trend between T/S optimal cut-off values (<1 or > 1) and colorectal tumor progression, metastasis, gender, P53 and COX-2 status. Conclusion: These findings suggesting that telomere shortening is associated with colorectal carcinogenesis but does not differ with tumor progression, gender, and metastasis.

        Characteristics of long-range transported PM2.5 at a coastal city using the single particle aerosol mass spectrometry

        Air pollution has attracted ever-increasing attention because of its substantial influence on air quality and human health. To better understand the characteristics of long-range transported pollution, the single particle chemical composition and size were investigated by the single particle aerosol mass spectrometry in Fuzhou, China from 17th to 22nd January, 2016. The results showed that the haze was mainly caused by the transport of cold air mass under higher wind speed (10 m·s<SUP>-1</SUP>) from the Yangtze River Delta region to Fuzhou. The number concentration elevated from 1,000 to 4,500 #·h<SUP>-1</SUP>, and the composition of mobile source and secondary aerosol increased from 24.3% to 30.9% and from 16.0% to 22.5%, respectively. Then, the haze was eliminated by the clean air mass from the sea as indicated by a sharp decrease of particle number concentration from 4,500 to 1,000 #·h<SUP>-1</SUP>. The composition of secondary aerosol and mobile sources decreased from 29.3% to 23.5% and from 30.9% to 23.1%, respectively. The particles with the size ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 ㎛ were mainly in the accumulation mode. The stationary source, mobile source, and secondary aerosol contributed to over 70% of the potential sources. These results will help to understand the physical and chemical characteristics of long- range transported pollutants.
