Changes in expression of monocarboxylate transporters, heat shock proteins and meat quality of Large White Yorkshire and Ghungroo pigs during hot summer period

        Parkunan, Thulasiraman,Das, Arun K.,Banerjee, Dipak,Mohanty, Niharika,Paul, Avishek,Nanda, P.K.,Biswas, TK,Naskar, Syamal,Bag, Sadhan,Sarkar, Mihir,Mohan, Narayana H.,Das, Bikash Chandra Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2017 Animal Bioscience Vol.30 No.2

Objective: Present study explores the effect of hot summer period on the glycolytic rate of early post-mortem meat quality of Ghungroo and Large White Yorkshire (LWY) pig and comparative adaptability to high temperature between above breeds by shifting the expression of stress related genes like mono-carboxylate transporters (MCTs) and heat shock proteins (HSPs). Methods: Healthy pigs of two different breeds, viz., LYW and Ghungroo (20 from each) were maintained during hot summer period (May to June) with a mean temperature of about $38^{\circ}C$. The pigs were slaughtered and meat samples from the longissimus dorsi (LD) muscles were analyzed for pH, glycogen and lactate content and mRNA expression. Following 24 h of chilling, LD muscle was also taken from the carcasses to evaluate protein solubility and different meat quality measurements. Results: LWY exhibited significantly (p<0.01) higher plasma cortisol and lactate dehydrogenase concentration than Ghungroo indicating their higher sensitivity to high temperature. LD muscle from LWY pigs revealed lower initial and ultimate pH values and higher drip loss compared to Ghungroo, indicating a faster rate of pH fall. LD muscle of Ghungroo had significantly lower lactate content at 45 min postmortem indicating normal postmortem glycolysis and much slower glycolytic rate at early postmortem. LD muscle of LWY showed rapid postmortem glycolysis, higher drip loss and higher degrees of protein denaturation. Ghungroo exhibited slightly better water holding capacity, lower cooking loss and higher protein solubility. All HSPs (HSP27, HSP70, and HSP90) and MCTs (MCT1, MCT2, and MCT4) in the LD muscle of pigs inclined to increase more in Ghungroo than LWY when exposed to high temperature. Conclusion: Effect of high temperature on the variation of HSPs and MCTs may play a crucial role in thermal tolerance and adaptation to different climatic conditions, pH regulation, muscle acidification, drip loss, protein denaturation and also in postmortem meat quality development.

Lightpaths Routing for Single Link Failure Survivability in IP-over-WDM Networks

Javed, Muhammad,Thulasiraman, Krishnaiyan,Xue, Guoliang(Larry) The Korea Institute of Information and Commucation 2007 Journal of communications and networks Vol.9 No.4

High speed all optical network is a viable option to satisfy the exponential growth of internet usage in the recent years. Optical networks offer very high bit rates and, by employing technologies like internet protocol over wavelength division multiplexing(IP-over-WDM), these high bit rates can be effectively utilized. However, failure of a network component, carrying such high speed data traffic can result in enormous loss of data in a few seconds and persistence of a failure can severely degrade the performance of the entire network. Designing IP-over-WDM networks, which can withstand failures, has been subject of considerable interest in the research community recently. Most of the research is focused on the failure of optical links in the network. This paper addresses the problem of designing IP-over-WDM networks that do not suffer service degradation in case of a single link failure. The paper proposes an approach based on the framework provided by a recent paper by M. Kurant and P. Thiran. The proposed approach can be used to design large survivable IP-over-WDM networks.

A zone-based traffic assignment algorithm for scalable congestion reduction

        Taylor Cox,Parimala Thulasiraman 한국통신학회 2017 ICT Express Vol.3 No.4

Traffic assignment networks are networks with pseudo-static behavior: the network topology is constant but the cost of each edge changes in real-time. Extensive work has been completed in the literature to develop efficient traffic assignment algorithms in order to reduce traffic congestion. While some of these algorithms have proven to be effective, little attention has been paid to the matter of scalability in traffic networks. In this paper, we use zones to develop a hybrid approach to traffic assignment. We divide a traffic network into zones where the path within each zone is proactively stored, and paths between zones are reactively evaluated. This reduces the cost of route discovery. Using the Simulator of Urban MObility (SUMO), experiments were conducted to compare the zone-based system coined Z-BAR against a zone-free system. Between Z-BAR and a zone-free system, initial results showed Z-BAR introduces a speedup factor of up to 1.22.

Endoscopic radiofrequency Stretta therapy reduces proton pump inhibitor dependency and the need for anti-reflux surgery for refractory gastroesophageal reflux disease

        Abraham Joel,Alakh Konjengbam,Yirupaiahgari Viswanath,Georgios Kourounis,Emily Hammond,Helen Frank,Shivani Kuttuva,Simon Mbarushimana,Hena Hidayat,Srivishnu Thulasiraman 대한소화기내시경학회 2024 Clinical Endoscopy Vol.57 No.1

Background/Aims: Radiofrequency treatment of the gastroesophageal junction using the Stretta procedure for treating gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is observed to improve the symptoms and proton pump inhibitor (PPI) dependence and reduce the need for anti-reflux operations. As one of the largest studies in Europe, we evaluated the clinical outcomes of Stretta in patients with medically refractory GERD. Methods: A tertiary UK center evaluated all patients with refractory GERD who underwent Stretta between 2014 and 2022. Patients and primary care professionals were contacted to obtain information regarding the initiation of PPI and reintervention after Stretta. Results: Of the 195 patients (median age, 55 years; 116 women [59.5%]) who underwent Stretta, PPI-free period (PFP) data were available for 144 (73.8%) patients. Overall, 66 patients (45.8%) did not receive PPI after a median follow-up of 55 months. Six patients (3.1%) underwent further interventions. The median PFP after Stretta was 41 months. There was a significant negative correlation between PFP and age (p=0.007), with no differences between sexes (p=0.96). Patients younger than 55 years of age had a longer PFP than their older counterparts (p=0.005). Younger males had a significantly longer PFP than older males (p=0.021). However, this was not observed in the female cohort (p=0.09) or between the younger men and women (p=0.66). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that Stretta is a safe and feasible option for treating refractory GERD, especially in younger patients. It prevents further anti-reflux interventions in most patients and increases the lead-time to surgery in patients with refractory GERD.
